Tourism, as part of the service sector in India, is one
of the key drivers of growth in the economy. As of
2018, tourism contributed to 9.2% of India’s GDP.

government has been trying to attract foreign tourists
to visit the country.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, tourism and


hospitality was one of the harshest hit sectors, as fear
of infection spread rapidly. However, the concept of
“Staycation” at luxurious hotels in the same city, saw
some traction in urban cities.

Govt Initiatives: Improve Tourism

Our Suggestion to the Government

Provide a tax holiday to all MSMEs, including travel and tourism companies, till the end of
financial year 2021-22. If necessary, this can later be extended to the next financial year.

Extend the RBI loan moratorium from three months to twelve months, while ceasing the
classification of loans as NPAs during this period. This will support many travel and tourism
companies that are suffering a big drop in business

India has only 14 tourism promotion offices abroad, located in countries which are its principal
sources of revenue. That is a small number and while some more can be set up, countries can
afford only a finite number of overseas offices
