Early Life

AOC was born in the Bronx, NYC on October 13, 1989

Her father is Puerto Rican and was born in NYC and worked as an architect. 

Her mother was born in Puerto Rico and worked as a house cleaner. 

AOC describes herself as a "dorky kid" who once asked for a microscope for her birthday. 

AOC placed second in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair when she was a high school senior
College Life

AOC took out loans to pay for college. 

AOC graduated from Boston University in 2011 with a degree in economics and international relations. 

AOC's father died when she was in college. Her family was plunged into financial trouble.  
Living Paycheck-to-Paycheck

After graduating from college, AOC moved home and worked as a waitress/bartender to help support her
mother.

She lived paycheck-to-paycheck which means that she made barely enough money to pay her bills.

In 2018, at 28 years old, with no political
experience, and no corporate backing,
AOC defeated 10-term incumbent Joe
Crowley to represent New York’s 14th
District.
What is a "10-term incumbent"?  Joe Crowley had been elected
TEN TIMES IN A ROW.  He had held that job for twenty years.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman to


be elected to congress. 

She is known by her initials AOC.

Time Magazine pegged AOC "the second most talked


about politician in the United States" - after only the
President. 

One of the few working-class members of congress. 


What does "working-class" mean? 
It means that she doesn't come from a wealthy
family. It means she has to work to pay her bills.
