WHO WAS ELIZABETH IN THE
BIBLE?
Ag e s 9 – 12 Ye a r s O l d
S T O RY O V E RV I E W:
Eight days after Elizabeth’s child was born, several neighbors and
relatives were there for the ceremony of circumcision. It was during this
time that children were officially given their names, and Elizabeth
declared her baby’s name to be John—Zechariah was still unable to
speak. The neighbors questioned Elizabeth about the name; none of her
relatives had ever been called John—certainly they should name him
Zechariah. But Zechariah procured a tablet and wrote on it the name of
John. In this he showed his faith in the angel’s prophecy, and, with that,
Zechariah was able to speak again (Luke 1:57–64).

Describe the life of the couple, Zachariah and Elizabeth before they had a child.
How did Elizabeth know that she had with a child?
How did Zachariah announced that he was having a son?
Why is Zacharias’s mouth was muted after talking to an angel?

Zechariah found this a bit hard to believe since both he and his wife were
“old”, but Gabriel (he was the same angel who later appeared to Mary) told
Zechariah that he wouldn’t be able to speak until the prophecy was fulfilled in
the birth of John.
Soon, Elizabeth learns that she is pregnant and secludes herself for five
months. She said, “The Lord has done this for me. . . . In these days he has
shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people”.
Not long after Elizabeth conceives, Mary also learns that she is pregnant.
Eight days after Elizabeth’s child was born, the neighbors and relatives
were gathered for the ceremony of circumcision. In the Hebrew tradition, it is at
this time that babies were officially given their names, and Elizabeth declared
her baby’s name to be John. Zechariah, however, was still unable to talk. The
neighbors asked Elizabeth about the name. It was an unusual name, at the time
and none of her relatives had ever been called John. Why not name him
Zechariah, after his father? But Zechariah grabbed a tablet and wrote on it the
name of John. In this he showed his faith in the angel’s prophecy, and, with
that, Zechariah was able to speak again.
Soon after Gabriel visited Mary, she sought a friend in her cousin, Elizabeth.
God provided for Mary as only God can. He gave her someone who would
empathize with her. Someone also with child. Someone who would “get” the
swollen ankles, morning sickness and, even being visited by an angel. They
provided comfort for each other as part of God’s plan.
We’ve all heard the story of Elizabeth and Mary but I think many of us
overlook how God provided to Mary and Elizabeth. We should never forget that
our God provides and that even today, He is at work in our lives providing as
only He can.
When Mary came to Elizabeth to share her news, Elizabeth’s reaction surprised
me. Elizabeth, considered barren and now in her old age, was about to have a
baby AND she was visited by the angel of the Lord! I mean, that’s news! But,
instead of being jealous over Mary’s own news – pregnant with the Son of God
– Elizabeth rejoiced for her cousin and that each were a part of God’s plan.
How many times have you heard of a friend or family member receiving
blessings and wondering why it couldn’t have been you? What about looking
over the fence at your neighbor’s home and seeing their new car lamenting over
the fact that your car is old, barely running and needs to be replaced.
Perhaps it’s feeling jealous over a friend’s job, vacation, fill-in-the-blank. I get
it. We tend to look at others and compare them to ourselves and our lack, but
what if, we changed our way of thinking and, instead, rejoiced with them?
What if we were genuinely happy for how God has blessed others? What if we
rested in the fact that we are just the way God wants us? That we have exactly
what our Lord says we need?
I’m pretty sure we’d actually feel a weight lifted that we don’t have to be or
look a certain way. God created us just the way He wants. I love this post from
Worth Beyond Rubies about comparing yourself to other. In it, the writer, Diane
Ferreira, says “Stop comparing yourself to others – you are chosen for this
place.” I just love that. What a beautiful reminder that God predestined our “lot
in life” and who are we to compare what others have or look like to ourselves?
God’s got this, we don’t have to.
Elizabeth didn’t have to be reminded of this. She didn’t fall into the comparison
trap. She rejoiced with her cousin over her news.
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so
favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your
greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has
believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” – Luke 1:42-45
God has a way of putting people in our lives at just the time we need them.
At a time in my life when the door was shutting on a very long-term friendship,
God placed a woman in my life who was just who I needed at the time as a
friend. She pours into me and strengthens my faith. She and I are walking a
similar path, my like Elizabeth and Mary and she is just who I need as a friend
in this stage of life. God knew that and He placed her in my life at just the right
time.
4. God always keeps His promises
The name Elizabeth means “God keeps his oaths” (more on that below under
interesting facts about Elizabeth in the Bible). When Elizabeth went years
without conceiving, she had no idea that in her twilight years, God would keep
His promises to her.
His kept promise to Elizabeth brought a prophecy to life and the one that would
go before Jesus to make a nation of Israel.
You may be struggling right now. You may not feel like you are making a
difference in the kingdom of God, but God has a plan for you, my friend.
You may not see it now, but He is at work and will always keep His promises!

Each time you see a friend or family member, think for a moment how your
words can bless (or tear down) someone.
I’m sure that Elizabeth was bursting at sharing her news, but, yet, she blessed
Mary before saying anything about herself.
Luke 1:46-55
Mary was so overcome by Elizabeth’s words of blessing, that she broke out in
praise.
When people are around you, are you a source of encouragement? Or are you a
sourpuss? Do your words cause people to praise God? Do you bolster their
faith?
Each week, I hear from readers who share miracles that God has performed in
their life. Marriages restored. Illnesses healed. Financial needs met. God is at
work among us and continues to perform miracles.
Our God is a God of miracles, and He delights in performing them for His
dearly beloved children.
Take a moment to think of any miracles that God has performed in your life.
Write them down. Thank Him for each one. He still performs miracles and I just
know that He has something big planned for you.
8. Choose Joy Instead of Jealousy
So, we’ve covered that Elizabeth chose to bless Mary and was thrilled for her
news. Instead of being jealous, she was humble and overjoyed for her cousin.
Of course, Elizabeth felt honored by God with her own pregnancy, but instead
of feeling jealous that Mary had an even greater blessing (I mean, she was
pregnant with the Messiah!), she, instead, was truly happy for her.
When we focus on God and build our faith in Him, we can rest in knowing that
He is doing what is best for us. We can know that He is working in our lives
and that He has His own timing that we can’t begin to understand. We then,
don’t feel jealously. We know that He is working all things for His good.
This child would come from Elizabeth. This child will be a son and
you will call him John. This kid that you are going to have late in life is
going to be amazing, he’s not going to drink. He will be filled with the
Holy Spirit even in his mothers womb.
John is to be set apart for the Lord. Scripture goes on and on with
what the angel says to Zacharias about this child that will be born to them
in their old age.
This backfires….
The angel answers him back with his credentials. God has sent him
and that should be enough kinda thing. It’s a Holy Ghost smack down. A
tactful smack down but a smack down none the less then there comes
another BUT….Because Zacharias has “questioned” God, he will be mute
until the baby is born because he did not believe the angels words.
This visit from the angel happens while Zacharias is serving in the
temple. Evidently Zacharias takes a long time in the temple because
scripture says folks are waiting on him. When he comes out he is
obviously mute. He cannot speak. They can tell something has happened a
vision perhaps.
Zacharias finishing his time of service in the temple and returns
home. Elizabeth conceives once Zacharias returns home.
She hides herself for the first 5 months. (don’t be ashamed when God uses
you out of season). We don’t know if she was ashamed. Let’s be real
being pregnant that late in life must have been a shocker. We do know
that she sees it as God is redeeming her story.
We know during this time Gabriel also goes to Mary and let’s her
know she will have a son and to name Him Jesus. The angel explains who
He will be. His name will be Jesus. Mary questions God but isn’t struck
down like Zacharias. We will dig into that a little more later in our
study.
The angel even tells her that her relative is pregnant as well. That
she is about 6 months pregnant. I love that scripture says that the angel
says “with God nothing shall be impossible”. Luke 1:38 tells us Mary is
willing to be a part of God’s plan. I love seeing that she has a heart
toward God.
We know that Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about 3 months. Luke tells
us Elizabeth gives birth to John The Baptist and others rejoiced with
her. We can assume perhaps that Mary was there for Elizabeths birth
because she was around 5 months and Mary stayed for 3 months.
On the day of John The Baptist circumcision they gathered around to hear
the name of the child. It was customary that the child be named after the
father. Elizabeth answered and said “no his name will be
John”. Remember Zacharias is still mute from doubting. The people
present for this occasion kind of argue with her about the choice of name.
The people then turn to ask Zacharias. He asks for a tablet and he writes
down the name “John”.
Lesson No. 1
FAITHFUL DOESN’T MEAN ABUNDANCE
Luke 1: 5-7
Lesson No. 2
Are there areas in your life that you have written off believing that
you’ll never be productive there? God still revives barren places.
People in the town probably had written off the possibility of her
having a child.
Your barren places might turn out to be your most productive. God
never saw Elizabeth as barren. God never sees you as barren. He sees
you “in a season”. He sees this season as a part of your story not an
unproductive life.
He knew the things He would allow to be birthed from you. You are
only limited by your view and faith.
Lesson No. 2
Mary never had the seed to be productive but “with God nothing will
be impossible”. God knows the seasons He chooses to use us in productive
ways. Neither one of these instances makes any sense.
God works best when it doesn’t make sense. That’s when we see
clearly it’s Him.
Lesson No. 3
DOUBTING
I very much view God as a relational God. I talk to Him and ask
questions often but when I read this it made me take a step back.. I have
to be honest and say that but Gabriel viewed this as “disbelief or doubt”.
I also struggled with the fact that Mary basically asked the same
question. The angel dealt with her very differently. She gets an
explanation. Why did she get an explanation and Zacharias was stricken
mute?
After having our online live study about this very area of this
scripture we came to the conclusion that the difference came because
Zacharias had been blameless. Perhaps this was the first time Zacharias had
questioned. Did God see this as a weakness in his faith? Obviously he did.
She didn’t question after the angel dropped that bomb on her. Mary
had faith.
I have learned that God deals with us one on one. He gets to do that
because He’s God.
Lesson No. 4
INFLUENCE
She waited her whole life to have a child. This child would be used
mightily for God. Her hands on influence started with her son.
I also love how Zacharias prophesies over the ministry of his son
John. We see Zacharias influence start as soon as John comes out of the
womb. Oh how I believe we miss an opportunity to lift our children to the
Lord and speak blessings and life over them simply because we do not pray.
Overview
God doesn’t have to bless me. He chooses to of His good pleasure.
God will use a barren season just like He does a productive season.
God can use my barren places to change the world.
What I see as a barren place doesn’t look barren to God.
God’s view of my life is very different than mine. My relational
conversation with God can expose my doubt. I should start paying more
attention to that….
A productive season can come out of nowhere and not make any sense.
I am to not question but to trust His placement in that season.
I can expect barren seasons to produce great fruit for Christ.
Influence starts at home. Influence comes from within.
God gives the influence in the season He chooses.
A barren or productive season can be used mightily to show Gods
miraculous power.
Without the barren seasons the productive wouldn’t stand out so
much….
