Heat Transfer 2nd Written Work

1. A 6 in. x 20 ft uninsulated pipe schedule 80 conveys steam at 385°F with an average

ambient temperature of 85°F. If the cost of the fuel is Php. 240.00 per 10 6 Btu with the
net energy conversion efficiency of 78%, what is the annual cost of the heat lost?
Note: For 6’’ pipe scheduled 80: Do = 6.625 in.; Di = 5.761 in.
For iron: k = 30 Btu/hr-ft-°F
For the surface coefficients: hi = 1000 Btu/hr-ft2-°F; ho = 2 Btu/hr-ft2-°F
2. A spherical container of negligible thickness holding a hot fluid at 150°C and having
an outer diameter of .5 m is insulated with three layers of each 50 mm thick insulation of
k1 = 0.02; k2 = 0.06 and k3 = 0.16W/m-K (starting from the inside). The outside surface
temperature is 27°C. Determine the following:
a. Heat loss (Watts) and;
b. Interface temperature (T2 & T3) of insulating layers (°F).
3. Steam, initially saturated at 20.25 bar, passes through a 10 cm standard steel pipe
for a total distance of 150 m. The steam line is insulated with 5 cm thickness of 85%
magnesia. For an ambient temperature of 25°C, neglecting steam surface coefficient,
what is the moisture of the steam which arises at its destination if the mass flow rate is
0.15 kg steam per second?
Note: k for 85% magnesia is 0.069W/m-K and h o for still air is 9.36 W/m2-K
