Antonio Pigafetta also known as Antonio Lombardo was born in Vicenza. He was an

Italian scholar and explorer. He joined the exploration to the Spice Islands led by

explorer Magellan under the flag of the emperor Charles V and after Magellan's death in

the Philippine Islands.

Pigafetta was one of the 18 crews and assistant of Magellan as they accidentally

discovered the Philippines. Their purpose is to colonize the Island of Mactan. Lapu-lapu

is one of the noblemen in Mactan Cebu. warriors of Lapu-Lapu, one of his in Mactan's

data, overwhelmed and defeated the Spanish forces. Fight for Raja Humabon of Cebu

under the command of a Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan died in battle.

Antonio Pigafetta wrote "The first Voyage Around the World" which means "Relazione

del primo viaggio intorno al" in Italianmondo" is a document about how he escaped

during the battle. Accounts were first distributed to European monarchs in a handwritten

form. It focuses mainly on the events in the Mariana Islands and the Philippines,

although it included several drawn maps of and terms for other areas, as well the word

primary known use "Pacific Ocean'' (Oceano Pacifico) on the map. Unfortunately, the

original document was not preserved. Antonio Pigafetta then wrote a book, a vivid and

detailed account of the voyage was expressed. However, it’s quite uncertain when he

said the book containing the account of the voyage was first published and what

language had been used in the first edition. The remaining surviving sources of his

voyage were extensively studied by an Italian archivist Andrea da Mosto, who wrote a

critical study of Pigafetta's book in 1898 which in Italian is, “Il primo viaggio intorno

al globo di Antonio Pigafetta e le sue regole sull'arte del navigare.” (In English
translates to: “Antonio Pigafetta's first trip around the globe and his rules on the art of

sailing”).

Pigafetta's story contributed a lot to the wealth of Philippine history. Pigafetta's

descriptions also include maps, a glossary of Aboriginal words, and geographical

information and descriptions of the flora and fauna of the areas they visited. His writings

give a glimpse of the political, economic and social situation of Visayas in the 16th

century. He described the appearance, social life, religious beliefs, and cultural

practices of the people he encountered in the islands of Samar, Leyte, and Cebu.

Thanks to Pigafetta, he proved Lapu-Lapu exist and get to know his story, even though

he only wrote a little. Lapu-Lapu is the first hero of the Philippines, who proved the world

that the Philippines is a place only for Filipinos. A 20-meter-tall bronze statue was

erected on Mactan Island to commemorate Lapu-Lapu's victory, and Cebu City Ofon

was renamed Lapu-Lapu City. Every year on April 27, the Cebu City government

organizes an event called Victory in Mactan to commemorate the victory of the Battle of

Mactan, a reenactment of the battle between Magellan's Army and the Lapu-Lapu Tribe.

Regarding Pigapeta, Cebuano historian Emelio Pascual said in his documentary that

the Italian scholar witnessed the famous battle and did not leave the ship to remember

the actual events. Although the exact details of its history are confused, Lapu-Lapu

remains a symbol of Philippine independence. Even after centuries of violence and

colonial rule, locals are proud of those who came together to take control of their

destiny.
