3.1 Background of the author

Pigafetta was born into a rich Vicenza family, and among other things, he studied
navigation. He served in the Knights of Rhodes galleys and accompanied the papal nuncio,
Monsignor Chieregati, to Spain. Later, he traveled to the Maluku Islands with the Portuguese
captain Ferdinand Magellan and his Spanish company. Magellan was slain and Pigafetta was
injured in the Philippines. Nonetheless, he healed and was one of just 18 of Magellan's original
crew members who returned to Spain on another ship, the Victoria, after completing the world's
first circumnavigation. Most significantly, [Pigafetta] kept a record of his travels, which is a
valuable source of information concerning Magellan's legendary voyage.

3.2 Historical background of the document

The Philippine Diary Project originally utilized the version, The First Voyage Round the
World by Antonio Pigafetta, translated by Lord Stanley of Alderley, as replicated in Wikisource.
However, as Torodash noted, "Lord Stanley, whose 1874 translation for the Hakluyt Society has
been discarded by modern scholars...", this version has been replaced by The First Voyage
Around the World (1519–1522): An Account of Magellan's Expedition, edited and Introduced by
Theodore J. Cachey Jr., University of Toronto Press, 2007, which is based on The Philippine
Islands, 1493-1898, Volume XXXIII, 1519-1522. Theodore J. Cachey Jr.'s book The First
Voyage Around the World 1519-1522: An Account of Magellan's Voyage provides a
chronology, which has been adapted in Red Text. As part of the Quincentennial Commemoration
of the Voyage, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines determined that the
Philippine national contribution would consist of identifying and designating thirty-four sites
along the Magellan-Elcano Expedition's Philippine Route. The NCHP has prepared material in
Blue Text.

3.3 Content presentation and analysis of the important historical information found in the
document
Antonio Lombardo, also known as Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, was a well-known Italian
adventurer who was born in Vicenza about 1490 and died in the same city in 1534. Initially
associated with the plea for Rhodes, which was Knight, proceeded to Spain in 1519, joined by
Monsignor Francisco Chiericato, and was made available by Carlos V to further the organization
begun by the Catholic Rulers in the Atlantic. At the time, Pigafetta claims that he heard of
Magellan's adventure while in Barcelona in 1519, Soon after, he became an amazing comrade of
Magellan's, who joined him, together with Juan Sebastián Elcano, in the popular campaign to the
Moluccas, which began in August 1519 and was concluded in September 1522. Despite its
tendency to include astounding precision, Pigafetta's report is the single most important source
regarding the journey of circumnavigation. Day after day, he made notes. Pigafetta's work
immediately became outstanding, attracting the attention of Western artists such as William
Shakespeare, among others. —in their view of the New World, alluded to the book.new and

4. Contribution and relevance of the document in understanding the grand narrative of Phil.
History
Pigafetta's travelogue is one of the most important fundamental materials in the
examination of pre-colonial Philippines. Antonio Pigafetta, the author of The First Voyage
Around the World, is an authority on the subject because he observed all that happened. As an
explorer, he is a valuable asset to the mission. He is recognized as a sailor and geographer, as
well as Magellan's helper, which made him significant to the expedition. His book, The First
Voyage Around the World, was a journal and a source of documentation. Antonio Pigafetta's
notebook served as the foundation for his 1525 voyage. According to scholar Theodore Cachey
Jr., the travelogue represented "the literary epitome of its genre" and achieved an international
reputation. This type of document attracts audience such as students studying history and
researchers making historical analysis. The document includes descriptions of peoples, nations,
commodities, and even animals.

5. Personal Insights
Yes, 2021 is significant for reasons other than the revival of COVID-19 cases and the
unofficial, stealthy beginning of campaigning for the 2022 national elections. Five hundred years
ago this year, as marked by the 2021 quincentennial commemorations in the Philippines,
Christianity arrived on our shores (and remains the dominant national religion); the Philippines
participated in Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano's first circumnavigation of the
globe (who took over after Magellan's death); and Lapulapu triumphed in the Battle of Mactan.
The last event—specifically, its protagonist—is the topic of a musical to be presented as part of
the quincentennial festivities, which have already been severely reduced due to the epidemic, and
the man chosen to tell this narrative is dramatist Nicolas B. Pichay.
