ENCROACHMENT
There are several cases of encroachment on transmission
lines Right of Way (RoW) in areas such as Barakallahu, Rigasa,
and many other communities within the Region. This has
continued despite several meetings with community leaders
to draw attention to the inherent dangers of erecting
structures under high tension power lines.

Most of the culprits claim to be the owners of the land while

others simply say that they have nowhere else to go. This is in
spite of the fact that community leaders and original
landowners were adequately compensated before the
erection of transmission structures on the affected areas. Engr. Aminu Haruna, RTM, Kaduna Region

- The uplift loads shall be assumed to be resisted by the
weight of the earth in an inverted frustum of a pyramid
of the earth whose sides make an angle equal to the
angle of repose of the earth with the vertical in average
soil.
- The weight of concrete embedded in the earth and that
above the ground level shall also be considered for
resisting the uplift. In a case where the frustum of the
earth pyramid of two adjoining legs overlaps each other,
the earth frustum shall be assumed to be truncated by a
vertical plane passing through the centerline of the
tower base.
- For foundations, the factor of safety shall be 3.0 for
normal conditions and 2.0 for broken wire conditions.

Resistance Against Down Thrust of Transmission Tower

Foundation
- The following load combinations shall be resisted by the
bearing strength of the soil: The down thrust loads
combined with an additional weight of the concrete
above the earth are assumed to be acting on the total
area of the bottom of the footing. The movement is due
to side thrust forces at the bottom of the footing. The
structural design of the base slab shall be developed for
the above load combination. River Crossing Foundation Design Criteria

BECOMING A MAN IN
FANTSWAM TRADITION
By Kazah Bili Akau

C ulture is a significant identity

of people. Becoming a man in
the Fantswam tradition is a
prominent aspect of the rich cultural
heritage of the people.

The Fantswam ethnic community

with a population of about 500,000
people is located in Kafanchan, the
southern part of Kaduna State. It is
made up of six villages, namely Zabin,
Zipak, Zankwo, Mannyi, Takau, and
Takum.

The Fantswam people are

predominantly farmers and hunters
and live in an organized system
governed by specific laws and
customs. The chief of the community
known as ''Agwam Fantswam'' has
advisers who are elders and
members of the Traditional Ruling
Council. They make all decisions
concerning the community.

In the past, this council supervised

law enforcement under a group known as the ''Aboi''. The From age five, the male child assumed certain responsibilities
