Engr. Okpe noted that in 2021 alone, unidentified persons

engaged in vandalizing TCN lines and towers did so almost

of the miscreants compromised tower members, leading to
their eventual collapse. He also lamented the continuous use
of transmission corridors for business which is not just
against the extant law but poses a great threat to the

He further explained that tower collapse negatively affects

VANDALISM
The Osogbo Region is not spared the pervasive challenge of Some of the ongoing projects being executed by in-house
vandalism that affects TCN operations nationwide. There are engineers include 30MVA, 132/33kV Transmission

discourage the perpetrators. The most recent occurred at the
new Osogbo-Akure-Ihovbor Double Circuit 330kV
transmission tower at Igbara-Oke along Ori-oke Gilgal in
Ondo State, which was constructed to carry supply from
Osogbo to Akure Transmission Substation. Management has,
through the regional office, engaged community leaders and
other stakeholders on the negative impact of illegal mining
near TCN facilities as well as vandalism of power
infrastructures; this has, however, had very little impact.

RIGHT OF WAY CHALLENGE

Encroachment on transmission lines route within the Region
is also rampant. This includes building and transacting business Engr. Kazeem Bakare (RTM Osogbo)

excavation. In the case of the Osogbo-Ganmo 330kV
Transmission line, laterite excavation has caused pervading
erosion that is threatening transmission towers, which is
urgently being addressed by the Region’s Management.

IN-HOUSE PROJECTS
TCN engineers in Osogbo Region have successfully installed
and repaired several transformers, replaced circuit breakers,
as well as undertaken line tracing and maintenance.

observed:

Fault Occurs --- Relay contact closes --- Operating

CIRCUIT BREAKERS: - RATED CHARACTERISTICS: The ratings

of a circuit breaker denote its capabilities under specified
conditions of use and behavior. The following rated
characteristics are generally specified for all high voltage ac
circuit breakers;
- Rated voltage
- Rated insulation level
- Rated frequency
- Rated normal current (rated current)
- Rated short-circuit breaking current
- Rated short-circuit making current
- Rated operating sequence (duty cycle).

MAINTENANCE OF A CIRCUIT BREAKER

Maintaining a circuit breaker is any action or activity carried
out to prolong its lifespan and optimize its performance.
The General Checklist for circuit breaker maintenance in TCN is
as follows;
- Check for overheating of CB terminals, expansion joints,
solid joints and jumpers, check tightness of connectors,
clamps – retighten if necessary.
- Check for sulphate or oxidation formation and clean if any,
put no-oxide grease on connectors.
- Clean and lubricate all the moving part and joints of the
operating mechanism.
- Check the surrounding structure, check for tightness of
ground clamps. clean and check contacts and connections
of auxiliary switches, clean rusty parts and paint, if
necessary, change desiccants.
- Carry out Megger and timing test and continuity test both
on CB open and close position.
