What is M2M ?

• M2M is the acronym for Machine-to-Machine

communications
• M2M allows a wide variety of machines to become nodes
of personal wireless networks, and provides to develop
monitoring and remote control applications.
• Example: ATM machines getting authorization to dispense
cash.
• This will decrease costs for involved human resources and
will make machines more intelligent and autonomous
• The broad spectrum of M2M communication includes
various innovative channels like intelligent remote control
of machine parts (telematics) to remote reading of
electric meters (telemetry).
• “Machines” using network resources to communicate
with remote application infrastructure for the purposes of
monitoring and control, either of the “machine” itself, or
of the surrounding environment.
• M2M is t an intelligent inter-machine co-ordination
ecosystem.

Applications of M2M

Applications of M2M

Real-time action: Real-time analysis of machine data and

decision automation.

Remote maintenance: Service visits can be cut down

significantly through fixing the problem remotely Machines
equipped with smart devices might also be able to auto correct
itself to avoid failures

Applications of M2M

Spare parts planning: An integrated spares store with real-time

monitoring of machine parts can trigger the ordering of critical
parts at the right time, thus, avoiding any major break down. At
the same time, it can have a tighter control of spares inventory
level

Easier tracking and monitoring of tools: Automotive OEMs

could be a great beneficiary from supplier management
perspective. M2M can help OEMs to track and monitor tool
health at supplier’s end without visiting them

Applications of M2M

Building smart shop floor: M2M can be a game changer for

efficient management of energy and utilities in plants. This
concept is already being used in switching street lights on and
off automatically, in smart city concepts etc. IBM is using a slew
of technologies, including IoT-based solutions, to digitally
transform the Rashtrapati Bhavan in India, which includes
energy, water and waste management.

Applications of M2M

• John Deere has fitted its tractors sold globally with sensors.
This helps the company update the farmer if a moving part of
the tractor or the harvester is likely to fail, around one month
before the event
