Lesson #1: The Nature and Background of Different Dances

Dance is the movement of the body in a

rhythmic way, usually to music and within
space, for purpose of expressing an idea or
emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking
delight in the movement itself (Judith R.
Mackarell). Dance is a powerful impulse, but
the art of dance is the impulse channeled by
skillful performers into something that
becomes intensely expressive and that may
delight spectators who feel no wish to dance
themselves.

Dance is one of the most beautiful

forms of art that has grown in
leaps and bounds.
Dance is no longer just a hobby; it is also one of the most lucrative professions as well.
Dance is a form of expression that helps a person bring forth who they are, and what they're
passionate about.

Dancing is a means of expressing one’s emotions through movement disciplined by
rhythm. It is an act of moving rhythmically and expressively to an accompaniment. The word
dancing came from an old German word “danson” which means to “stretch”. Essentially, all
dancing is made up of stretching and relaxing.

Different forms of Dance

1. Traditional (Folk/Ethnic)
It is a cultural art form handed down
from generation to generations. It
communicates the customs, beliefs, rituals, and
occupations of the people of a region or country.
Folk dancing belongs to the people. It emanates
from them. Ethnic tribes have their specific tribal
art forms originated and danced by the people of
the tribe. Examples of folk dances are the
rural and country dances, jotas, mazurkas,

pandanggos, among other with foreign influence. Examples of ethnic dances are the dances
of the mountain peoples of the cordilleras.
2. Modern and Contemporary
Modern dance is a type of dance which was created by early 20th century dancers and
choreographers as a way of renouncing the strictness of classical ballet while contemporary
dance is a type of concert dance which was developed from modern and postmodern dance.

3. Ballroom (Recreational and Competitive)

The setting of the social and ballroom dance is a
social gathering with the more formal atmosphere
than the simple and informal parties in which
the recreational dances are the usual forms. Social and
ballroom dancing are generally held in the evenings.
The participants are usually in formal attire.
4. Cheer dance
Cheer dance is a physical activity with a
combination of different dance genre and gymnastics skills such as tumbling, pyramids,
tosses and stunts. The routines usually range anywhere from one to three minutes, and they
are done to direct spectators to cheer for sports teams or participate in cheer dance
competition.

5. Hip hop
The word hip-hop was derived from the word “hep”, an African American vernacular
English language since 1904 which means “current”. It was apparently invented by a New
York rapper Kevin Donovan, (known as Afrika Bambaataa), who was dubbed as the
grandfather of Hip-hop.
Nature and Characteristics:

 The movement of hip-hop dance contains an assertive angularity of body posture and
an insistent virtuosic rhythmicity.
 It is freestyle in nature and maybe practiced in either a dance studio or in an open
space outdoor.
 It consists of four fundamental characteristics such as rapping (MCing); Disc
jockeying (DJing); Break dancing (B-boying); and Graffiti Art (Aerosol Art).
 Can also be described by elements such as bounce or recoil, tightening of the body,
agility and coordination, and fun.
 It has several styles that comprise two main categories, the Old school (breaking,
