• As part of a repair/exhaust emissions test (and so on) it is established that the catalyst has to be replaced.

Vehicles with exhaust gas recirculation are affected.

Technical background
If a catalytic converter with part number 06F 253 052 X or 06F 253 052 AX has been fitted in service, the
software version of the engine control unit must be checked according to the following table. If necessary, a
software update for the engine control unit has to be carried out..

The software versions listed in the following table were up-to-date when this TPI was published. Further
software versions may have been released since. At least the software version listed in the "New" column (or
higher) must be used.

The software variants 06F 906 056 GJ and 06F 906 056 EM can only be updated online via an action code.

On the following engine control units a software update must be carried out.

After replacing the catalyst, use the new software to make the following adjustment to the engine control unit in
self-diagnosis mode:

• Perform

The following points must be observed before the update.

• ODIS tester: The ODIS service patch version 2.0.0 and the baseline version (diagnosis data dib_GFF-v)
2.5.0 or higher must be installed.
• During the software update switch off all unnecessary electric electrical equipment (for example ventilation,
seat heating, interior/exterior lighting and so on).
• Make sure that during the software update no electro-magnetic radiation sources (for example, mobile
phones or cordless phones) are used in or near the vehicle.
• A cable connection between the ODIS tester and the vehicle must be used. When using a Bluetooth
connection (diagnostic tool) the software update may fail.
• A cable connection between the ODIS tester and your workshop network must be used. When using a WiFi
connection (diagnostic tool) the software update may fail.

The online update of the control units via SVM (Software Version Management) can only be performed with a
networked Offboard diagnostic information system service. To find out the calendar week from which the
software is available online, refer to the column online from week*.
You also receive the new software with the update DVD software adaptation for control units. To find out the
DVD from which the software is available, refer to the "From DVD" column. Even with the DVD an online
connection is necessary (insert DVD and start update via SVM).
