Update the software for the power steering control unit -J500- (electro-mechanical steering column) according to

The software versions listed in the following table were up-to-date when this TPI was published. Further
software versions may have been released since. Observe the action code.

Software update of power steering control unit -J500- (electro-mechanical steering column):

On vehicles with a software version number below SW 3111 in the power steering control unit -J500-
(see table 1) service campaign 48L5 (revision number: 2038758/*) must be carried out beforehand.

Then update the software according to table 2.

The following points must be observed before updating/starting up the electro-mechanical start-up
(power steering control unit -J500-):
• ODIS tester:The Offboard diagnostic information system service patch version 3.1.3 and the baseline
version (diagnosis data dib_GFF-v) 2.32.9 or higher must be installed.
• Make sure that a battery charger is connected to the vehicle battery.
• During the software update/start-up of the power steering (-J500-) switch off all unnecessary electric
consumers (for example ventilation, seat heater, lights and so on).
• A cable connection between the ODIS tester and the vehicle must be used. When using a Bluetooth
connection (diagnostic tool) the software update/start-up of the power steering control unit (-J500-) may fail.
• A cable connection between the ODIS tester and your workshop network must be used. When using a WiFi
connection the software update/start-up of the power steering control unit (-J500-) may fail.
• Because of the highest transmission stability for updating/starting up the control units use the diagnosis
interface VAS 6154 (WiFi diagnostic tool) only in USB operation or use the cable-connected VAS5055. If
these devices are not available, use the VAS5054 in USB connection mode.

The online update of the control units via SVM (Software Version Management) can only be performed with a
networked Offboard diagnostic information system service/VAS PC tester. To find out the calendar week from
which the software is available online, refer to the column Online from week*.

The updating procedure is described under:

ODIS tester:
• special functions -> update software -> update software with action code

The procedure for the start-up of the power steering control unit (-J500-) can be found under:
