Cornell method have been part of all college student since the 1950 and their
appeal has survived to present day, A professor from Cornell University, Create a
method which help his students keep their notes organized and useful, Cornell
method is named after the Cornell University. This method has proven extremely
effective in a learning context at a school or university setting, Many successful
students and business people have found that the Cornell note taking system is
very effective for lectures or reading that is organized around clearly defined
topics, subtopics, and supporting details, and it promotes active listening and has
been shown to be more effective in helping students retain information, Mastering
the Cornell method can also help you develop more effective study habits and
improve your performance on exams as a result.
PROFESSOR WALTER PAUK
Walter Pauk, a American professor who create cornell method,
Professor Pauk serve in the US Army during WWII and the korean
war. In April 1945, Second Lieutenant Walter Pauk crossed the Rhine
with his battalion, the 910th AAA AW, attached to the 15th Corps of the
Seventh Army, and received orders to detach a platoon, peel off the main
road and take care of a place called Dachau. While Pauk serving in the
Military he experience a lot of miserable things, According to Pauk, a
pile of bodies of men, women and
girls, each in a long cloth bag, was
stacked by the deserted railroad depot. His first job was to write down
the numbers tattooed on the arms so the dead could be later identified
after they were buried.
Pauk said he was at Dachau about 10
days before the officials arrived to
relieve him. Near the end of his stay, Pauk received orders to transport
some former prisoners to a central gathering place about 30 miles away.
They loaded the prisoners into Army trucks. Each truck had a soldier
guard with his loaded rifle. Pauk gave the order not to shoot any
prisoner who jumped off the truck, he recalled. When the trucks reached

their destination, there were only a few prisoners remaining.
"My heart went out to each man who jumped off the
1914-2019 truck" Pauk wrote.

Taking good notes is one of several keys to academic success.
There are several reasons why developing an effective technique of note taking is important.
2.Encourage concentration
Taking effective notes requires a student to be mentally active during a lecture or while
reading. One has to pay attention, interact with information, make decisions about what to
record, and write. Given that the mind is occupied with a demanding task, there is less
opportunity for the mind to wander.
Instructors generally expect students to remember and apply facts and ideas presented in
lecture or in texts. Tests are based on key ideas teachers emphasize in their lectures and/or
written material that supports key concepts or themes. In other words, the testable material.

There are a variety of note taking styles. No single method suits all students.
However, many successful students and business people have found that the
Cornell note taking system is very effective for lectures or reading that is
organized around clearly defined topics, subtopics, and supporting details.
The Cornell System is both a note taking and a study system.There are Six steps to do
it
Step one: RECORD
1) Prepare your notepaper by creating a two-column table. The lefthand column should
take up about 1/3 of your writing space, leaving the remaining 2/3 for recording
information. Use only one side of each sheet of notepaper.
2) Summarize and paraphrase (restate in your own words) the facts and ideas presented.
Record definitions as stated or written.
3) Indicate changes in topic with headings or by leaving a space between topics
4) Number, indent, or bullet key ideas presented with each topic.
5) Aim for telegraphic (brief) sentences, abbreviations, and symbols. This will increase your
note taking speed.
6) Write legibly so your notes make sense to you later.
7) Edit as soon as possible.
