Determiners
-are words placed in front of a noun to make it clear what the noun refers to.
-they determine or limit the meaning of a noun or a noun phrase in a sentence.
EXAMPLES:
• May I have some bread?
• This cat is always annoying.
• Payal is my elder sister.
Usage of Quantifiers
• Little, a little
-little means not much
-a little means some or a small quantity
Examples:
o Miranda had little strength, that’s why she lost the race .(hardly any
)
o Miranda, however had a little strength left in her body.(some, in
small quantity)
• Few, a few
-few means not many
-a few means a small number
Examples:
o The bird died because few people had cared for it.(practically no
one)
o We could save the bird as a few people cared for it.(some did)
• Much, many
-Much is used with uncountable nouns to show large quantity
-Many is used with countable nouns .
-Example:
o She had shown much patience for the parrot.
o Many Birds came to see Miranda.
• Some, any
-some is used in affirmative sentences
-any is used in interrogative and negative sentences.
-Example:
o There was some disturbance in Miranda's room,
o 'Is anyone at home?,' a voice asked.
o 'I don’t want any visitors now, 'the doctor said.
• Less, fewer
-Less refers only to quantity
-fewer refers only to number
-Example:
o There were less than two kilos of seeds.
o There were no fewer than twenty birds .
