CHAPTER 2:

1.What are the factors in selecting a suitable farm site for a home garden?
The selection of a site for a home garden depends upon certain factors. It is wise to avoid
planting in areas where major diseases of choice crop species abound. The farm site should be
free from pollution and should be accessible to transportation for possible commercial
purposes.
2. What are the basic factors affecting the growth of plants? Discuss each factor.
There are certain factors that affect the growth of plants. These are water supply, drainage, soil
fertility, open sun, air calculation and size of the garden.
3. What is the importance of climate and temperature to plants? How do they affect the
growing of plants?
The climate plays an important role in vegetable growing. Typhoons and heavy rain during the
wet season cause considerable damage to the growing crops. Vegetable are not usually
adapted to watery areas. The soil deposits caused by the floods affect also the fertility of the
soil because of the scraping of the top soil that causes excessive soil erosion. The incidence of
pest and diseases is also high during this point. However , you may grow vegetable crops
during wet season on raised beds and with proper drainage system.
Rainfall distribution affect pest population. An increase of pest population is difficult to control
in areas with well- distributed rainfall because the pest spread out throughout the harvest
period. The even distribution of rainfall allows for the overlapping generation of pests affecting
adversely the growth of plans.
4. What is a planting calendar? Explain the importance of preparing a calendar for planting
crops?
