D. Answer the following questions in brief.

Q1. What is a natural disaster?

Ans. A natural disaster is a natural event that can cause great destruction and damage to the property and
sometimes loss of life as well.

Q2. Why is the study of earthquakes important?

Ans. The study of earthquakes is important because it causes landslides and avalanches especially on
mountains. Study of earthquakes helps scientists to identify various areas of world that are prone to
earthquake, so that people can be trained in advance.

Q3. Who is seismologist?

Ans. Scientists who study earthquakes are called seismologists.

Q4. What is the Richer scale?

Ans. Richter scale measures the magnitude and intensity of the earthquake.

Q5. Write one cause of forest fire.

Ans. Causes of the forest fire:

• A spark of lightening or the heat generated from rotting plants or animals

• Heat from the lava of a volcano

• Human carelessness

Q6. What do you understand by famine?

Ans. Famine is extreme scarcity of food caused by droughts.

Q7. Write one example each of active, dormant, and extinct volcanoes.

Ans. Active volcano: Mount Etna of Italy

Dormant volcano: Mauna Kea of Hawaiian Islands

Extinct volcano: Mount Popa of Myanmar.

Q8. If a volcano has erupted in the last 5,000 years, then which type of volcano is it?

Ans. Dormant volcano.

E. Answer the following questions in detail.

Q1. What step should we take at the time of an earthquake to keep ourselves safe?

Ans. Steps to be taken at the time of an earthquake:

• Drop down on your hands and knees so that you do not fall suddenly.
• Use your arms to cover your head and neck.

• Hold on to a heavy object so that you do not move easily.

Q2. How do the following occur?

a. Earthquake b. Volcanic eruption c. Tsunami

Ans. a) Earthquake: There is a lot of pressure on the upper layers of mantle and crust of the earth which
causes strain. When two blocks of earth suddenly slip past one another, it gives rise to an earthquake.

b) Volcanic eruption: Magma collects inside the chamber which burst out from a vent when pressure in
chamber builds up.

c) Tsunami: A tsunami can be caused either by earthquake, volcanic eruptions, or landslide.

Q3. How can we measure intensity of an earthquake?

Ans: Intensity of an earthquake can be measured by an instrument called seismometer which detects the
vibrations caused by an earthquake and produces a pattern on a paper.

Q4. Differentiate between the three types of volcanoes.

Ans: Types of Volcanoes:

• Active volcanoes are those that have erupted in last 10,000 years and can erupt again.

• Dormant volcanoes are those that have erupted in the past. It can erupt again, but at the moment it is
inactive.

• Extinct Volcanoes are those that have been inactive for thousand so years and not expected to erupt again.

Q5. Define the following terms.

a). Magma b) fault c) Crater

Ans: a. Magma: Deep inside the earth there are hot molten rocks called magma.

b. Fault: The surface where two blocks of the earth slip past each other during an earthquake.

c. Crater: The hollow top of volcano that is shaped like a bowl.

Q6. A city ‘Z’ lies on the bank of river ‘M’. It has a poor water-drainage system. Every time it rains heavily,
there is a fear of flood. Why do you think it is so?

Ans: Poor water drainage system can cause the overflow of water from a river on to the land. This can cause
flood.

Q7. How can earthquake affect the human lives?

Ans: Earthquake can damage the building and injure people due to the falling objects and rocks.
Earthquakes can have immediate and long-term impacts on health. Immediate health impacts include:
trauma-related deaths, injuries from building collapse and injuries from the secondary effects of the
earthquake, like drowning from tsunamis or burns from fires.
