ENGAGE

 Review
1. What was our lesson yesterday?
2. What is intensity?
3. What do we use to measure the intensity
of an earthquake?
4. On the other hand, what is magnitude?
5. What scale to be use to determine the
magnitude of an earthquake?
A. ENGAGE
 Unlocking of difficulties
1. hazardous- involving risk or danger
2. awareness- knowing that something(such as
situation, condition, or problem) exists
3. simulate- to look, feel, or behave like
(something)
4. displacement- the state of being displaced
5. shock wave- a movement of extremely high air
pressure that is caused by an earthquake
6. destruction- the act or process of damaging
something so badly

HAZARDOUS EFFECTS
OF AN EARTHQUAKE
Objectives:
Identifyand describe the
hazardous effects of an
earthquake
Demonstrate awareness
of the effects on the
environment and to human
Give importance of
studying the effects of
earthquake

Questions to be asked:
1. Based from the video that you’ve
watched, what is the meaning of an
earthquake?

Answer:
Earthquake is the sudden
movement/shaking of the
ground.
C. EXPLAIN
2. What are the hazardous effects of an
earthquake?
Answer: destruction of
property and loss of lives
Flood

tsunami

landslide

fire
C. EXPLAIN

3. How does an earthquake affect the properties

and to the life of individual

Answer:
The structure above the ground where the strong
earthquake occur are usually destroyed when ground
raptures occur. Ground raptures or cracks on the ground
can destroy structure in the area such as bridges,
houses, and buildings. It can cause death to human due
to the fact that during earthquake, many people are
trapped when building and houses collapsed.
C. EXPLAIN
4. Why does flood occurs after an
earthquake?

Answer:
When the ground shakes, it
sometimes causes displacement
on the surface. It displaces big
rocks which may block the flow of
the river. The water flows the
low line surrounding area.
C. EXPLAIN
5. What is tsunami? And why does tsunami
happen when an earthquake occurs under the
sea?
Answer:
A tsunami is the Japanese term which means literally
“harbor wave”. It is a huge underwater wave
produced when an earthquake occurs under the sea.
A tsunami is formed when rocks along the fault slip.
The sudden movement of the rocks produces a
shockwave through the water above it and makes
powerful waves. The waves on the ocean’s surface
spread out across the ocean and reach the shallow
water. The waves get bigger and taller when the
waves reach the shallow water near the land. These
waves can submerge places in coastal areas.
C. EXPLAIN
6. Why does an earthquake can cause
landslide?

Answer:
Ground shaking can loosens rocks
and soil, which causes the rock
and soil to slide and bury area
below the mountain.
C. EXPLAIN
7. How does an earthquake can cause fire?
Answer:
Earthquake can cause fire when
electric power and gas lines break.
C. EXPLAIN
8. However, it is necessary for us to study
about the effects of earthquake?

Answer:
Yes, it is important to study about
the effect of earthquake so that
we would be able to plan what we
must do before, during and after
an earthquake.
