Assignment No. 3

Instruction: Solve the following problems. Write your solution on a clean short
bond paper. Make sure to box all your final answer for each item. Strictly no
erasures allowed. (2 pts. each)

1. Assuming that there are no heat effects and no frictional effects, find the kinetic
energy and speed of 3220 lb body after it falls 778 from rest. Start with the steady
flow equation, deleting energy terms which are irrelevant.

2. A reciprocating compressor draws in 500 cubic feet per minute of air whose density
is 0.079 lb/ cu. ft and discharges with a density of 0.304 lb/cu. Ft. At the suction,
P1 = 15 psia; at discharge P2 = 80 psia. The increase in the specific internal energy is
33.8 Btu/lb and the heat transferred from the air by cooling is 13 Btu/lb. Determine
the work on the air in horsepower. Neglect the change in kinetic energy.

3. Steams enters a turbine with an enthalpy of 1292 Btu/lb and leaves with an
enthalpy of 1098 Btu/lb. The transferred heat is 13 Btu/lb. What is the work in Hp
for a flow of 2 lb/sec.?

4. Given steam pressure of 900 lb/ft2, pressure of 300 0F, specific volume of 5.8 ft3/lb.
If the specific enthalpy is 9500 ft-lb/lb, what is the internal energy per lb of the
system?

5. Steam enters a turbine with a specific enthalpy of 3628 kJ/kg at 50 m/s and leaves
the same stage with an enthalpy of 28 kJ/kg and a velocity of 130 m/s. Calculate the
work done by the system.

6. What is the KE of a 2.25 lb body traveling at 30 ft/s?

7. An air compressor has an inlet air enthalpy of 25 Btu/lb and exit enthalpy of 50
Btu/lb. The mass flow of air is 31 lb/s. If the heat loss is 366.62 Btu/min, find the
work input to the compressor in hp.

8. Steam at 1000 lb/ft2 pressure and 300 K has a specific volume of 8.5 ft3/lb and a
specific enthalpy of 9800 ft-lb/lb. Find the internal energy per pound mass of steam.
