Eastern Visayas Literature Analysis

A Balac from Eastern Visayas  My understanding on the literary, refers

to a man in love and a woman that
struggles to trust any man that could
genuinely love her. The woman wishes
for the man to keep proving his love by
asking for the most impossible tasks.
While the man despite his efforts to win
her over, the woman keeps rejecting him
but stated by the man he says that his
heart will remain unmoved.
 “Even if you hide behind the clouds, I’ll
still run after you. And if my body fails,
then, a letter I’ll send to you” A romantic
line that I liked from the story, signifies
the loyalty and love the man has for his
woman to only love her and only her
even afterlife.
 Literary used for the story is Metaphor
Pintados of Samar  Literary explained, the history, beliefs,
and the experiences of the bisayans
particularly the warays from the 17th
century. The traditions between tattoo’s
that symbolizes a “man’s war record”.
And the conquest of the Spanish
missionaries to their tribe. That resulted
in slavery, abuse, and self-sufferings for
a definite amount of time and failed acts
of rebellions to regain freedom and later
achieved with the help of the American
government.
 “The more tattoos a man had, the more
he was looked up to in society” Was a
very interesting fact to know. For it differs
the reaction of society from tattoos
through today’s generation.
The Haiyan Dead  Poem detailed the horrible tragedy that
greatly affected the people from the
islands of Leyte, Samar, and Biliran by
the deadly typhoon internationally known
as Typhoon Haiyan, the literary explains
the experiences that people endured
during the attack of the typhoon.
 “They are looking for the bed by the
window, cocks crowing at dawn lizards in
the eaves, they are looking for the men
that loved them at night, the women who
made them crawl like puppies to their
breast babes they held in arms” It greatly
defined the situation that people
experienced during the typhoon, an
image of men at night fighting to avoid
the flood inside their house, A woman in
the flood carrying their baby in their
embrace and people pleading for their
lives to be saved.
 Literary device used for the story was

Mindanao Literature Analysis

A Question of identity  The history of surnames that had given the

Filipinos the freedom to choose
themselves. It is stated that there had
been multiple all too common types of
surnames in the Philippines that caused
confusion to identify an individual. That “a
catalog of surnames” was then put
together and assigned each head of the
family to choose their surname.
 “Not many people have been able, after
all, to choose, as we Filipinos did, their
own identity.” This sentence was very
interesting for I was not aware that in the
past our surnames was controlled and had
the freedom to choose what surname was
in our liking. If my great-great grandfather
chose our last name then I could say that
he certainly picked a great one.
Blue Blood of the Big Astana  A story with two kids named dayang-
dayang and jaafar with each opposite in
a standing of social status. Dayang-
dayang is a blue-blood considered as
royalty while Jaafar is the servant-boy of
dayang dayang in the astana (datu’s
house). A story of two polar opposites
that spent their childhood together. But
while time passes by and grew apart
dayang-dayang grew poor by the
misfortunes of the choices made by her
husband meanwhile Jaafar remained
single but became semi-successful in
the end acquiring business in bonbon,
living in kanagi and maybe even
considered as a landsman.
 “That urge to go back to you, Dayang-
Dayang, was strong. But I did not go
back for a sudden qualm seized: I had
no blue blood. I had only a harelip. Not
even the fingers of Allah perhaps could
weave us, even now, into equality”
Despite the unexpected turn of events
their status have changed. For Jaafar it
still did not change his views that feeling
of being inferior to dayang-dayang that
he always viewed as someone as
unreachable due to her royal image and
being a blue-blood.
The Land of Promise  The ‘Land of prmoise’ particularly the
land of Mindanao. I believe it states the
misfortune regarding the marawi terrorist
attack, the endless battle of gun firing
and bombing. A bloody urban battle
between the ISIL Fighters and
government forces. The once lovely
peaceful land suddenly disturbed by a
detrimental war between the battle of
men.
 “Is there hope for yomorrow? Will our
wailing cease? Will our children and ther
offspring have the chance to live in
peace?” the plead for freedom and
peace to hopefully end the never-ending
battle and hopes for a future that regains
the lovely land of Mindanao with only
beautiful islands and bountiful lands.

poem was rhythm

The Transparent sun  The story tells us between an old man
called don julio and a young greedy
woman named zenaida, wanting a
specific necklace that his cousin happens
to have in her possession but is clearly
very important to her and has a
sentimental value to her life. Don julio was
torn whether who’s wishes he would like
to follow, his young beloved wife, or his
cousin that he is very much indebted to.
 “Esteban had said, a debt of honor binds
a man more strictly because it is the
measure of his life.” I liked this sentence
because I find his mindset upon paying
his debts to people rather honorable.
Pearl of the orient  It explains the beauty in Manila with its
city full of resilient people that overflows
with good people that welcomes you with
their hearts while wearing such big
smiles. But despite its beauty it states that
Manila hides a dark truth. Manila’s
number of crimes of theft and gunshots
with cries of help from their people have
been long ignored and avoided it states
its demand to let the truth be free. But
regardless of all that Manila is still loved
by its people and is still considered as
their home.
 “Manila, your lingering smell of cancer
comes with the dark blue starless sky
telling people to grip their bags until it
merges with their bodies’’ This sentence
was a display of the other side of manila,
The lingering smell of cancer, was a
symbol for the dark smelling smoke from
the sky that pollutes the air, and gripping
their bags until it merges to their body a
metaphor for keeping their important
valuables from getting stolen from street
thieves.
