ON MY WAY HOME
I´m thinking: “I’m finally here and a year full
of emotions is waiting for me”. I’m at the Baggage
Claim Area passing through the metal detector and
my suitcases are in the x- ray machine. I’m leaving the
airport by the second gate and “Wow! New York,
what a nice city!”. A taxi driver is helping me. I’m on
my way home, my new home, at least for a year. The
buildings are big, streets are full of people and yes, of
course, the girls are beautiful. The taxi is going along
the avenue, crossing streets, turning right and left.
Men and women are walking straight, taking the bus,
going to work. We are crossing the park and people
are running. What happened? A robbery. The traffic
light turned red and the woman in the next car is
looking at me and smiling.
We arrived home, the building is nice and I’m
thinking again “I’m finally here”.

Paul: How many courses do you take?
James: I take 5 in total.
Paul: Where do you work?
James: My friend Pete and I produce a radio program called
“New York today”.
Paul: What do you do there?
James: I make copies, do the interviews, receive the guests. I’m basically
a gofer. The program mixes music with entertainment, political
and weather information, etc...
Paul: Do you like it?
James: I love it and I hate it. I like to create something new every day.
I can’t stand it when we have so much pressure, but in general is great.
Paul: Sounds interesting. What do you do in your free time?
Do you go out with Joan?
James: I wake up, have breakfast, listen to music and prepare for the
university. After classes I have lunch and work until 7:00 pm,
then I see Joan. We go to play pool, basketball or watch some
movies. I visit my family on weekends. Oh! They invited you to
have dinner on Sunday.

A Day at Columbia
A DAY AT COLUMBIA
I have a very important interview today. The
university wants to meet me, listen to my projects, my
studies, my resume, everything about my career. I’m an
international student so they want to know about my
experience and my research. I don’t feel nervous, I’m
confident and prepared. Columbia is a wonderful
university and gives you a lot of benefits if you are
good. The campus is enormous and there are many
sport playgrounds, buildings and gardens.
It’s time, I’m in the interview, this person looks
very interested in my documents, he doesn't
understand some things and he asks many questions:
“Why do you study journalism?” “I want to show this
world can be better”.
James doesn’t have a class today so he is here
with me. “And, what do you think?” “I can tell you one
thing, I´ll do my best because I want to be the best”.

The Mc Carthy Family
THE MC CARTHY FAMILY
The Mc Carthys are typical New Yorkers. They live in
Manhattan. Sarah and Jimmy have four great children, the first
is Edward, he is married and has a two-year-old daughter. He
always thinks about his daughter’s future. That’s why he works
so hard, but he always makes time for his family. They usually
go out on weekends and often travel abroad. James is the
second of the siblings. He’s a journalist at a radio station.
Sometimes he works at Edward’s company too. James always
works very hard because he wants to achieve his goals. Susan is
the only daughter, she is in school and is very responsible. She
hardly ever goes to parties and she always tries to help her
friends.
The youngest is Jerry. He is 10 years old. He is naughty and kind of lazy. He seldom
brings good grades home. It isn’t a big family but they are very close. They always have lunch
together on Sundays. Usually aunt Dorothy cooks chicken stew or roast beef. Tom sweeps the
floor and Jerry sets the table. After dinner Susan cleans the table and James washes the dishes.
Sarah never does anything on Sunday. It’s like her free day.
Not all of them live together but they are pretty close and have a very nice relationship.

HOW DID YOU GET TO THE U.S.?
Mr. Mc Carthy: So tell me Paul, how did you get to the U.S.?
Paul: Well, I’m here to get a degree. I studied journalism in my country.
Mr. Mc Carthy: Did you already finish?
Paul: Yes, I finished my career last year.
Mr. Mc Carthy: Did you work there?
Paul: I practiced in a newspaper. I used to help with the edition of the
local news.
Mr. Mc Carthy: Why did you study journalism? Did you always like it?
Paul: Well, it’s more like a tradition in my family. My father and uncle
are journalists too. Mom used to work as an assistant in a famous
radio.
Mr. Mc Carthy: Oh! I see how you took the final decision.
Paul: Well, I listened about journalism all my life but actually it all
started when I was in school.
Mr. Mc Carthy: How come?
Paul: When I was in elementary school my teacher used to ask the
class to prepare some news, so we could play them as
newscasters in front of the class.
Mr. Mc Carthy: Sounds like fun!
Paul: Yes, we used to gather all the desks, sit in front of the board
and read our news. When my reading was boring all my
classmates threw paper balls, erasers or pencils at me. It was terrible!
Mr. Mc Carthy: Ha, ha! Did you feel frustrated with that?
Paul: No, not at all. It pushed me to be a better journalist.
Mr. Mc Carthy: And you’ll be, just like my son James.
Paul: I really hope so!

No, we met in the supermarket.
Paul: Were you buying something?
I was choosing some fruit: apples, watermelons, cherries,
tangerines and grapes while she was looking at the vegetables.
Paul: Did you ask her anything?
Well, I was listening to her saying: “Ok, onions, carrots,
cucumbers …” ,when I sneezed and the potatoes she was
holding fell: “Are these sweet potatoes?”, she asked.
“Not until you held them” I said.
Paul: Wow man! That was really cheesy! Did she smile?
Of course.
Paul: Did you become friends?
We were walking around the supermarket for hours.
Paul: And how long were you going out together?
For several weeks. Then, one day we went back to the
supermarket and I told her “You know how are the sweet

I met Paul when we were in the last years of
college. Paul was about to finish some courses in his
country and I was taking some final exams. There was a
very important seminar in London that year. The best
journalists around the world were going to give lectures
about their ideas, projects and experience. It was a great
opportunity to make contact and exchange information.
I was eating some typical Peruvian dishes when I heard
four guys speaking Spanish near me. I knew the
conversation was funny because they were laughing
hysterically. I didn’t understand a word but when I was
looking at them, Paul turned and told me: “Peruvian
jokes!… do you want to join us?” Paul was telling me
jokes while I was practicing my Spanish. Certainly it was a
very important moment in my career and I was also
