Importace of Time Management As an ISE Students

Time is a valuable human resource because it can never be comeback once it has

passed. Time is priceless even though it cannot be seen. Every passing second is more and

more valuable. Because once time is gone, there's no coming back ever. It never waits for

anyone. Especially in today's social trend, people try to race against time. The more and more

development of the global economy as well as Vietnam's economy has caused a significant

impact on the use of the time fund of each person. The lifestyle of people is also gradually

becoming more rushed with the development of the world. Everyone has the same amount of

time a day, 24 hours, a year, 365 days, but not everyone use well their time. We all know that

there are 7 days in a week however, the mindset towards this timeline between a hardworking

people and a lazy people is completely different. For hardworking people, a week has only 7

days, but for lazy people, a week has many days and their work can be postponed as long as

they want . Although time is valueable, many people do not know how to take advantage of it,

causing a waste of time. Especially ISE students today. Many students think that they are

young and still have a lot of time, so they do not know how to appreciate it. They waste their

youth and time for many disadvantage activities. According to Stephen R. Covey, “Do not let

the worry about running out of time hinder your efforts. Time will pass, so all we can do is

make the most of it”, the importance of time is significantly mentioned in this sentence by

author, he want to inspire his reader to spend time suitablely and do not wast any monment.

Realizing the increasingly poor situation of wastefulness of the current generation of ISE
Ly 2

students, I selected this topic to clarify the situation and offer solutions to keep this situation

under control.

Time is a term that is used to define the order in which events happen and how long

they last. Time is a relative physical quantity that characterizes change, an intermediate value

that helps us to see material changes.

Time has the following four characteristics:

+ There is no turning back: Time has only one dimension, from the past to the future. Once

time has passed, there is no way to get it back. It always moves forward without turning back.

+ Can not be stored: Whether we use or not use time, it will be lost.

+ Can not be replaced: There are specific events and phenomena that can be replaced by

similar phenomena. However, time is unique and cannot be used for any substitute

+ Can not be reversed: For a manufacturing process, the manufacturer can reverse the process

or like the process of creating customer demand, businesses can reverse the process to create

the product before it can be reversed customers have needs. But time is different, time only

has a moving process forward and people want to reverse it but can not do it

Wasting time is a way of spending time on useless and unreasonable things. That

division of time and work does not help accomplish the goal, bring the best efficiency for the

work, but can also bring about the opposite effect. Inaddition, time management is the process

of making a to-do list, the principle of implementing the schedule, ensuring that everything is

done according to the plan without going to waste. The mean of time management is the

process of exercising conscious control over the amount of time for a particular activity,

especially to increase productivity. Well time managager can gain many advantages such as

improve individual and collective productivity and efficiency, have more time to spend on

themselves, reduce pressure at work, increase joy at work, can make a lot for the future plan
Ly 3

and solve long-term problems, enhance creativity, ect. Moreover, according to Dr. Jason Selk

who is author of "Organize Tomorrow Today: 8 Ways to Retrain Your Mind to Optimize

Performance at Work and in Life", there are some examples of wasting time: no specific goal,

no daily to-do checklist, spending too much time on useless works, always postponing,

always say yes to others demands, do work in rush, having little time for themselves.

In the book "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" by David

Allen has a setence that is “Your greatest asset is your earning ability. Your greatest resource

is your time”. However, nowadays, youngsters and students are wasting too much time and do

not know how important of it. They spend most of their time on unhelpful activities, highly

entertaining activities, little knowledge, no great benefit, no direction for life, work and study

in the present or the future as watching movies, playing games, suffing the internet, ect. It is

easy to see right in the school when most of the students are focused on listening to the

teacher, there is no shortage of students who are engrossed in watching their phones, surfing

social networks, watching movies, playing games, making up,... even sleeping while the

lesson. Around the student dormitories, there are many game online cybers, many students are

willing to skip class and spend hours at these places. Even fasting and borrowing money

everywhere to buy more time to play games. "15 Secrets Successful People Know About

Time Management- The Productivity Habits of 7 Billionaires, 13 Olympic Athletes, 29

Straight-A Students, and 239 Entrepreneurs" by Kevin Kruse tell that most important factor to

decide a good managment skill is the awareness to do the tips. However, the above

phenomena occur not only when learning offline but also when learning online. In the face of

the stressful situation of the COVID-19 epidemic, in the last two years, the school's students

still study online, because in university, the lecturer only has a guiding role, students have to

be self-conscious. self learning. Sitting behind the computer screen there are many hidden

corners that the camera cannot reach, the lecturers cannot fully observe and monitor all the

students are over 18, so there are few parents to supervise. All have created ideal conditions
Ly 4

for private work such as using social networks, watching movies, playing games, etc. For

example, Facebook - a leading social networking application in popularity in Vietnam, a very

addictive application not only for students but also for young people, according to a research

shows that up to 24.8% of people from age 18-24 use. In a survey of the website

GlobalWebIndex, Vietnam ranks in the top 10 countries most addicted to Facebook in the

world. As for the Instagram application, up to 47.6%. The average time a day young people

spend on social media is now 7 hours. This is a pretty big number for students and during

these 7 hours, most of the time is useless activities that waste time. Do not leave today's work

for tomorrow, but many of youngsters still do the opposite, including me. When the teacher

assigns homework, the group leader assigns tasks, manages part-time jobs, and parents assign

household chores, usually I will wait until the end of the term before starting to work or if I

do, I will also do it. Follow your feelings, think no matter what, there is no reasonable

arrangement or division of time and effective time management. Or never plan to work

because it feels unnecessary. But the consequences, even I myself was not aware until I

received heavy loss in study, life and work.

According to Steve Roger who is writter of the book “Value Time”, people have

several reasons to waste time. The first, do not know to listen. When being taught by teachers,

parents, etc., the sincere advice, students often do not listen, care and behave that these things

they already know. And if they listen to it, they rarely do it, do not try to assume that they can

not do it and waste their most valuable youth time on temporary fun. The second, no goals

and no priorities, no planning. It is clear that nowadays most students do not have or do not

clearly define for themselves the right goals. This is one of the most common causes. Unable

to determine a certain goal, hands are faster than the brain, thinking about where to do it.

Goals are the core element of planning. Without it, it is difficult to make a suitable plan,

leading to missing important tasks. Because without a plan makes it easy for us to make many

mistakes, whirl around not knowing what to do next, what is important to do first. This
Ly 5

consumes and wastes a lot of time, affecting productivity and work results. Even if there is a

great work plan, but life always happens many unexpected situations, students should not be

rigidly forced to follow the plan but need the flexibility to cleverly change and adjust the plan.

Plan accordingly when unexpected problems arise. In particular, do not use excuses and

excuses to cover up your own slowness and laziness to ruin the plan. Building to-dos and

turning them into a list is simple. But for the most streamlined, least time consuming work, it

is important for us to know which task to do first. Based on the level of importance, arrange

them in order of priority. When planning work, this is an extremely important step. We will

be delayed in important tasks when working on inspiration if we do not list the tasks in order

of priority because then there will be a lot of unordered miscellaneous work interrupting the

working circuit. After planning, many students will not do it, but just think a lot and leave it at

that. Not taking action right away according to the plan will waste our time and effort

thinking, making to-do lists. Time management has a motto: Do more, think less, so when the

plan is completed, it is time to immediately start working on it. The third, procrastination at

work. The biggest cause of time-wasting phenomenon for ISE students is procrastination.

Many students think that they are still young and have a lot of time but ""If you do not do it

today, it's okay to do it tomorrow". This thought has been deeply rooted in the subconscious

of many people. Surely many students have stayed up all night to meet the deadline

tomorrow, the assignment has a deadline of 1 month, but the last few days before the deadline

will start working. This unnecessary procrastination has wasted a lot of valuable time. When

we could have done more meaningful things instead of doing useless work. The disease of

procrastination has made us unreliable and irresponsible. The disease of procrastination has

become a core time-wasting factor and a major cause of indecision, passivity, and reduced

reflexes in everything. Other bad habits such as procrastination and passivity also stem from

procrastination. As MSG, Management Study Guide gives the important tip is “staying away

from the internet whenever you have work to do”, but students are now using of smart phone
Ly 6

and internet. Phone addiction today has become a very common phenomenon, it is easy to

observe that many students of internal affairs have become 'slaves' of this piece of technology.

Habits of wasting time greatly affect life and work. Smartphones are silently addictive,

making it difficult for many students to recognize. Calls or messages from friends easily take

from a few dozen minutes to an hour, even longer when we are studying or working. Those

messages and calls are mostly eight useless things together, delaying and wasting time for

other jobs. Along with the development of society, information technology is also more and

more developed, So are smartphones. New phones are constantly being released with many

functions, applications, entertainment utilities, etc. Making them waste a lot of time. Equally

important factor that makes us students waste time is the internet. The Internet can bring a lot

of benefits and conveniences, but if you do not know how to use it properly, it will be

counterproductive.

Effects of wasting time on ISE students. Wasting time will cost you a lot of

knowledge. People who know how to manage their time effectively will always know how to

take advantage of the time we miss to learn and cultivate new knowledge and skills that are

useful for their lives and future. 24 hours a day probably won't be enough if you don't know

how to make the most of it. Student period is the period when you have a lot of free time to

learn more things. Wasting time means you miss out on a lot of useful and valuable

knowledge. But later you hardly have the opportunity to learn. The biggest harm that students

waste time encounter is that you lose your aspirations, dreams, and success. Later you will

regret for missing many opportunities because of wasting time on meaningless things, not

trying, not working hard to achieve that dream. Causes work overload due to prolonged

completion time. The tasks kept piling up from hour to hour from day to month. At that time,

the amount of time to complete the work is shortened, leading to visible results, unsatisfactory

results. Wasting time also affects health. Because wasting time always leads to many

consequences later on such as work overload, staying up late, unhealthy eating, etc. It easily
Ly 7

causes psychological problems such as stress and physical problems. In the long run, it is easy

to suffer from serious diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys, etc.

According to Giang Oi who is a famous youtuber sharing about self-help, there are four

solutions to be a good at managing time including: “get enough sleep, find out what unhelpful

habit take so much of your time and cut it down, make a list of everything you want or need to

get things done that day, discipline yourself”

If you sleep 8 hours a day you still have 16 hours left and if you have a clear mind and

physical health that good sleep brings back, you will be able to work and learn very

efficiently. There is no reason to spend your sleep time to do anything, in order that the next

day, you always feel tired, sleepy and can not do well anything

Let find out what unhelpful habit take so much of your time and cut it down. For me, it is

playing games, watching movies and suffing the social media, these activities often take me 5

hours a day and it become one of my daily routine. When i realized that i really spent so much

time on it, i deciced to change. It is difficult to right away cut it, so i slowly decrease the time

on it, and now i only spend 2 hours for it. Then, i have more time to do more important things

In the morning or night before going bed, you should make a list of everything you want or

need to get things done that day. That activity sound boring and useless, but believe me, i did

think like that until i do it. This list really helps us to remind and avoid forgetting or missing

any tasks

Any tips will be useless when you do not discipline yourself to do it. Stop lazying and

postponing, there is no life hack or easy way to help you get everything you want if you do

not do anything.

Moreover, Indeed Editorial Team the author of the book “Why Is Time Management

Important? And How to Manage Your Time” suppose that understanding how to listen is
Ly 8

crucial to improve time management skill. Listening to others is an art, very important but

often overlooked. To make the most of our time and also to avoid trouble with

misunderstandings, you need to learn to be a good listener. You need to respect the other

person, and at the same time stay focused when talking. Instead of thinking what to answer

them, listen first. Knowing how to listen strengthens relationships and reduces the possibility

of wasting time on valuable misunderstandings. Next, set goals and work plans is also

important. Having a specific goal helps us to be more motivated to work, helps you evaluate

your own work quality and productivity process. Clear goals will help you save time and

work better. In other words, it's easier for you to stay on track and focus on your work

because you know what you have to do and where you are going.

According to Brian Tracy who is youtuber makes video “The Importance of Time

Management”, she suggests that using the SMART method:

SMART goals are specific goals that try to achieve within a certain period of time. These

goals need to be drafted and thought out carefully in order to set them up successfully.

"SMART" is an acronym that describes the most important characteristics of each goal.

SMART is an effective way to set goals. SMART stands for 5 factors: specific, measurable,

achievable, realistic, timetable

Moreover, Ho Loan who is writter of the book “The Importance of Time Management:

8 Ways It Matter” suppose that there are few steps to create an effective work plan:

Step 1: Make a list of tasks and tasks to do for the day, week, and year

Before taking this step, think carefully and then clearly define the specific tasks in detail

Step 2: Prioritize your work

Urgent and important: do it as soon as possible

Important but not urgent: plan for them

Ly 9

Urgent but not important: pass it on to someone else

Not important and not urgent: cross them out as soon as possible

Step 3: Staying focus on work and study

Concentration will improve work efficiency and save time

Step 4: Flexibility in the plan

When faced with many unexpected situations, can change the order of work or always arrange

a free time to deal with all situations.

Step 5: Check the progress and performance periodically

Checking will help improve the unreasonable point in the plan, whether the completion time

is on schedule, and also encourage yourself.

Step 6: Motivate yourself

You can motivate yourself by rewarding yourself for completing a difficult goal or task. From

there, promote your own spiritual will.

Ly 10

In conclusion, the reality of wasting time is a very alarming situation today, not only

for students of ISE but also for everyone. Wasting time can have dire consequences for the

person who wastes it. If this situation becomes more and more common, it will also cause

unimaginable consequences for today's Vietnamese society. Economy, culture and society

will all be delayed, leaved a far distance with the world. But this problem can only be solved

by each person. Therefore, each person should train their own consciousness to minimize the

waste of time. Time management makes no sense when we do not obey to the principles,

plans, defined timeframes. So, manage time effectively, start from the smallest steps with

concrete actions, no delay in implementation. Procrastination will form a bad habit that leads

to management ineffective time. Usually, in work, there are three kinds of barriers to action

lack of motivation, do not know where to start investing, see too many barriers, difficult

towel. Experts advise needing to find motivation to act, need to build the threshold of

expectations is constantly higher so that I can constantly try, need communicate with people

to know how to work effectively and accept difficulties and challenges are an inevitable part

of success.
