Introduction

An energy study of a manufacturing facility and the energy systems that are connected to it is
referred to as an industrial audit. This analysis aims to ascertain the plant's energy efficiency and
to highlight for the client any potential improvements.

The steps of auditing are-

Environmental Policy

Environmental Planning

Implementation & Operation

Evaluation & Corrective Measure

Management Review

Modern industrial technology, quick and convenient transportation, and luxurious living all
contribute to pollution, but too much pollution can harm a person's physical health as well as his
or her emotional, social, and financial wellness. There is currently a cry to "rescue the nation
from this menace the pollution" coming from every nook and cranny of society. To remedy
historical abuses of sound environmental standards, governments all around the world have
created laws and regulations. We visited a few industries in the Khulna city region in order to
evaluate their environmental performances while taking into account all of these factors.
Environmental impact assessments also require auditing. The EIA cannot be finished without
auditing.
Auditing Area:
 The first industry we visited was the VIP Luggage Industry. VIP Luggage Industry is an
industry situated in Mongla EPZ of Bangladesh. It is Exporter of Soft Luggage,
Hard Luggage, and Backpack. Bangladesh Luggage market report comprehensively
covers the market by type, distribution channel, and region. The market report provides
an unbiased and detailed analysis of the ongoing market trends, opportunities/ high
growth areas, market drivers, which would help stakeholders to devise and align their
market strategies according to the current and future market dynamics.
 The 2nd industry was Hua Xiang Jute Products Co. Ltd. It is a jute industry which makes
product from jute. The products include cradles, bags etc.

Objectives for the audit:

The audits in the industries are done to fulfill the following objectives-

 Determine how well the environmental management systems and equipment are
performing
 Verify compliance with the relevant national, local or other laws and regulations
 Minimize human exposure to risks from environmental, health and safety problems
 Proper documentation of the state of environmental compliance.
 Determination of waste water properties and their consequences on the biological system,
as well as evaluation of waste water quality.
 Once a year, regular environmental auditing will aid in the production of environmentally
informed and technically sound individuals.
 Monitoring the size of optimal resource use and evaluating the organization at the
national and international levels.
 A properly designed and performed environmental audit program can improve an
industry's environmental performance.
Steps of Environmental Auditing:

An audit is often carried out by a team of individuals who gather factual data before and during a
site visit, analyze the data and compare it to the audit's criteria, make inferences, and then present
their results. The majority of the time, these procedures are carried out according to a formal
framework (an audit protocol), which enables the process to be reliably reproduced at other
facilities and ensures that the quality is upheld.

 Pre-audit
A pre-audit is preliminary work performed by an auditor before to the audit's scheduled start
date. A pre-audit's purpose is to acquire preliminary information about the client that may be
utilized to highlight any areas that may require special attention during the audit. We are not
professional auditors, so in this case we introduced ourselves to the company's employees to
acquire an overview of the company's current management situation as well as whether or not
their by-products affect the environment.
 On-site audit
Meeting of the team with the appropriate unit personnel and discussion of the objective.
The 3 primary functions on site activities are
 Record & documentation review
 Interview with staff
 Physical inspection of the facilities.
 Post-auditing

Ensure adequacy of audit evidence at the conclusion of onsite audit by:

 Reviewing information gathered

 Collecting additional information as needed
 Substantiating audit findings
 Summarizing and documenting all findings and observations
 Identifying issues requiring immediate attention/mitigation
 Noting outstanding issues requiring follow-up
 Preparing debriefing material for the Closing meeting
Raw material
 Synthetic cloth, color, synthetic foam, chain, jute and so on.

Policies and safety

 Company product safety policy is defined here, meet the obligations to produce safe and
legal products.

Site visiting
Industrial Processes:
The raw materials are imported from China because of cheap price and easy processes of
import. In the industry, the raw materials are stocked in two different area. One of the stocks is
permanent stock from where the raw materials are not taken frequently and the other is
temporary stock from where the raw materials can be collected at any time when needed. From
the temporary stock the raw materials are taken to industrial production process. At first the
synthetic belts are cut through the machine. The machines were automatic where all the
programmed were set and by this way the belts are sized. After that the different parts of the 6
bags are prepared in different machines.

Figure 1: bag processing

The machines were automatic too. After sizing the different parts, the parts are sewed in different
machines. One machine sews the back part of the bag, another machine join the side cover and
by this way the total bag is prepared. At the finishing of the production area, there were two
person who examined the quality of the bag as was recommended by the sellers. After that the
bags are packed and kept for export processes.
Figure 2: fittings

We as the same time visited the color and painting section where the seals are prepared. There
different types of colors are used to paint the seals. Different drying machines are used there to
ensure the optimum utility of the seals. The buyers of these seals strongly recommend for the
best quality and sustainability of the seals so quality is strongly maintained there. As there used
different chemicals so there is health hazards risks. So the workers here used musks , hand
gloves. There are about 9 (nine) different brands of bags prepared there like Sky bags and so on
famous brand

Figure 3: jute processing

Environmental safety: To ensure the optimum safety of the work place , there were fire
extinguisher, CO2 cylinders and so on precautionary . As we collected information production
cost per bag is about 400 taka 7 and each of the bag is sold at about 2000 taka. As it is a product
of Export Processing Zone , the products aren’t sold in the local markets and they are exported in
foreign countries.
Observation
In the VIP luggage industry, they produce bags from the raw materials imported from other
countries. The other industry we visited produce materials from jute which use the raw material
produced in our own country. In both of the places, there are some observations which I’ve taken
notes of-

 The unused raw materials from the bag industry is disposed unsafely and it is non-
disposable which is danger to the soil environment of that area.
 The air quality of the jute industry is very unhealthy for the workers.
 The workers don’t have enough knowledge about the environmental health and safely.
 The workers use heavy equipment about which, they don’t have proper education about
how to use it safely.
 The waste disposal was not good enough in both of the industries.
 There was excess amount of noise pollution.

Recommendations:
After observing the conditions of the industries, here are some recommendations for improving
the environment –

 There was a working ETP plant which needs to be checked properly.

 The workers need ear buds for the noise pollution.
 In the jute industry, they must wear masks as the air quality is degraded and there are too
much particulate matter and dust.
 Workers need to be educated and raise awareness properly to reduce accidents.
 The fire extinguishers need to be checked regularly to see if they’re up to date.
 The buildings need more ventilation system.
These are some steps which could be taken to mitigate the risks for the environment and the
workers.

Conclusion
Environmental auditing has a critical role to play in ensuring that organisations fulfil their policy
commitments to environmental management and performance. Audits can provide key
information to senior management on areas of risk, and progress towards strategic objectives and
targets. n a broad sense, environmental auditing aims to help protect the environment and
minimize the risks of business activities to the environment and human safety and health.
Whereas, in the company’s perspective, it aims to check whether the company has complied with
the environmental regulations and requirements and achieved the previously set environmental
goals.
