Baliwag.

What to see and experience in Bulacan
and Baliwag?
• Bulacan has fast become an ideal tourist destination, owing to its
vital role in Philippine history, and its rich heritage in culture and
the arts.
• The signing of the Pact of Biak-na-Bato in 1897 was a brilliant
chapter in the history of Bulacan. However, the crowning glory
among the series of historical events in the province was the
establishment of the Capital of the First Philippine Republic in
Malolos. The Malolos Church and the Barasoain Church will be
both remembered as the executive headquarters of President
Aguinaldo and as the Legislative, from September 10, 1898 to
March 29, 1899. It was also in Malolos that the famous and
historical document, the Malolos Constitution, was drafted and
ratified (www.bulacan.gov.ph).

• On the other hand, the rich culture of Baliwag waves
hand of welcome to most tourists from other towns and
countries. The colorful festivals held in Baliwag and the
artistic engineering of the churches in town receives
hundreds of fascinations.

• Baliwag offers the homey feeling of an old rural town


surrounded by green trees and sturdy mountains from
Cordillera and Arayat. While enjoying the relaxing
ambiance of Mother Nature, people living in Baliwag
savors the ease of access in their modern living as they
are placed just an inch afar from what they need.

Baliwag, dubbed as the “Buntal Hat Capital of the
Philippines” is composed of twenty-seven (27)

Festivals in Bulacan and Baliwag

Bulakenyos and Baliwagenyos celebrate festivals and


observe feasts which commemorate an aspect of the town
or province’s religion or culture. These festivals and feasts
invite locals and foreign visitors to experience these
celebrations which boost its tourism sector.

As cited in the website of the Provincial Government of


Bulacan, the famous festivals which are celebrated in the
province are the following:

1. Calumpit Libad Festival - A fluvial procession of
well-decorated pagodas is held on the river every 23rd
of June right before the annual town fiesta in honor of St.
John the Baptist. Townfolks gaily sing, dance and frenzily
douse water to "baptize" passers-by - prepare to get wet.

2. Santa Cruzan - a religious-historical parade that


started in the mid-1800s, with the first being held in
Malolos, Bulacan. It is held in honor of Queen Helena of
Constantinople and her son, Constantine the Great,
finding the True Cross: the cross that's said to be the one
upon which Jesus was crucified.

3. Luyang Dilaw Festival – Luyang Dilaw or


Halamang Dilaw Festival celebrates the town’s prosperity
by paying tribute to nature’s wonder root crop
called “luyang dilaw” (turmeric ginger). The said Bulacan
festival is not complete without funfairs, exhibits, contests,
concerts, street dancing, and many more.

3. Obando Fertility Dance - a festival where


couples who hope to be blessed by children
perform street dances in a long procession. ...
Nowadays, the Fertility Dance is celebrated
in Obando in honor of Santa Clara, San Pascual
de Baylon, and Nuestra Señora de Salambao

5. Feast of the Holy Cross of Wawa - The


Pagoda sa Wawa is held each first Sunday of July in
Bocaue, Bulacan, out of appreciation for the Holy
Cross of Wawa Mahal na Krus sa Wawa.

6. Sto. Niño Festival - The celebration, while much


smaller than the annual one in Cebu, provides a way
of seeing in a single place how many local
manifestations of the Santo Niño have made their
way into Filipino life and culture. The Malolos feast is
the largest celebration of Santo Niño on Luzon Island.

7. Linggo ng Bulacan- A week-long celebration


consisting of various colourful cultural presentations,
art and culinary exhibits, arts and skills contests, and
the prestigious annual Dangal nf Lipi Awards Night.
Yearly, its activities vary depending upon the
chosen theme for the year.

8. Plaridel Horse Festival- Herd of horses with


colorful tiburins parading in the streets of Plaridel in
reverence to St. James the Apostle every 29th and
30th of December.

9. Pulilan Carabao Festival - The Carabao Festival is


celebrated in various provinces such as Rizal, Nueva
Ecija, and Bulacan but it is more popular in Pulilan,
Bulacan because they celebrate Kneeling Carabao
Festival in the said province.

10. Flagellants and Lenten Rites- A way of


repentance and sharing in the sufferings of Christ,
worshippers whip themselves or have themselves
crucified at Kapitangan, Paombong during the Holy
Week. Also, religious rituals are celebrated in all the towns
especially in Malolos, Plaridel and Pulilan. Families with old
life-size "Santos" bring them out during this time to be part of
the colorful processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. On Easter
Sunday, a little wooden angel (or a live little girl) descends from the Galilee to
take off the virgin's mourning veil
Baliwag, meanwhile, is known for its Buntal Hat Festival which is celebrated
in the month of May and is organized by the local government or
municipality of Baliwag. The start of the festival is on May 26 and is
celebrated weeklong by the Baliwagenyos.

Tourist Attractions in Bulacan and Baliwag

Travel like a local.

As any travel advice will say “Do what the locals do, go where
the locals go and eat what the locals eat!” to fully experience
the place and the culture.
There are numerous historical, ecological, religious, heritage
sites one can explore in Bulacan and Baliwag. Among these
famous sites are: Barasoain Church, San Agustin Parish
Church, Pulilan Butterfly Haven and Resort, Biak-na-Bato
National Park, Pinagrealan Cave, Puning Cave, Barasoain
Ecclesiastical Museum, Enriquez Ancestral House, The Greenery,
and more.
