ANSWER SHEET

Instruction: Read thoroughly the module on Anthropological Foundations on Education

and answer in the answer sheet the following activities comprehensively.

Activity 1: How would you classify our culture? (Page 7)

Culture is a very dynamic and multi-dimensional aspect of development as it

spans and intersects with various sectors and social groups. More than these
intersections, it is also an interface of the past and the present that influence how
people move forward into the future. It is the identity of societies, where way of life is
a result of their histories, stories, experiences, knowledge, beliefs, and traditions.
The Philippines is considered a collectivistic society. Our culture as Filipinos is an
exuberant story that tells the nations’ journey through the centuries. Our customs
reflect our faith, our oneness with one another, our affinity with nature, and our
celebration of life. Some people say that Philippine culture is a culture in which East
meets West, since we as Filipinos have a very distinct Asian background, yet having
a strong Western tradition. Nowadays, Filipino culture is developed through
influence from Chinese traders, Spanish conquistadors, and American rulers.
Filipino people tend to be very hospitable, especially to Western visitors.

Activity 2: Can you name what is good in Philippine culture and what is not?
(Page 12)

Culture has several dimensions; its role in development spans and intersects
with multiple sectors. As such, culture is regarded as one of the pillars for achieving
inclusive, sustainable, and human-centered development. Building culture into the
formulation of policies and in the design of development interventions enhances the
effectiveness of programs and projects because cultural contexts are recognized.

I am proud to be a Filipino, for we are a culture of individuals with strong

hearts and resilience. And because of our strong ties to Spanish culture, we as
Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin
than Asian. Family is the basic and most important aspect of our culture. Divorce is
prohibited and annulments are rare. The family is the safety net for individuals,

And I think, the current problem in our culture is the way how we as Filipinos slowly
forget those values that our ancestors hold dear, creating a very different, somewhat
fragmented identity. Our identity as Filipino has been undermined but there are
inherent Filipino values that can be nurtured toward promoting the common good.
Our colonial experience gave rise to feelings of inferiority as manifested by our
culture of hiya or shame. The pervasive undermining of what it means to be Filipino
gave way for regional identities that kind of overshadows our national pride. This led
to a society that has become disconnected from its core culture and is characterized
by fragmented identities. Values like malasakit, bayanihan, or pangaddatan that
manifest pakikipagkapwa-tao, a way that Filipinos recognize kinship among
themselves. And we are in a time now that these values need to be inculcated for
national unity and social cohesion.
Activity 3: What other implications can be made regarding language and writing?
(Page 17)

In a global society, language and culture are congruent with each other. It is a
crucial part of learning process. So is writing. A scholar even said that “language is
the fundamental institution of society, not only because it is the first human
institution experienced by the individual, but also because all other institutions are
built upon its regulatory patterns.” As Filipinos, our language is inseparably
connected to who we are as a people. Most of us know how to speak our national
language, and that is one of the ways for us to be united as a people especially
during these trying times. The Filipino language is the spirit of our national identity.

Activity 4: Make your own implications regarding your religion. (Page 21)

Religion has been the light in the fountain of knowledge that inspires, guides,
and influence the minds of each and every one of us. Having been colonized by
Spain for more than 300 years, the Filipinos are predominantly Catholic. This had a
major effect on each and every learner in our country. Consequently, as they learn
noble truths and practice high religious ideals, they form a perfect circle of wisdom
as a student populace. Moreover, to education, religion plays a very important role
in the process of socialization. Religion, in the most diverse forms, has been found
in all human societies.

Activity 5: Give other educational implications (Page 25)

Education in the Philippines had increased and received new challenges that
worsened the current state of the country. On the other hand, culture is the
characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing
language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts. Art is the expression or
application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as
painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or
emotional power. Philippine Art reflects a society with diverse cultural influences and
traditions. In this era, in which technology is advanced, people could already be
aware of the culture and arts of other countries without leaving their own country.
The culture and arts of the Philippines are both equally essential in the Philippine
cultural history as well as on the improvement and development of the Philippine
identity.

With the sudden events brought about by the health crisis, distance learning
modes via the internet or TV broadcasts were ordered. Further, a blended learning
program was launched, which involves online classes, printouts, and lessons
broadcast on TV and social platforms. Social media is one of the best ways for
things to easily be passed through. With that being said, we as educators should
maximize the use of this platform for them to be engaged in preserving their own
culture. They could do so by means of taking part in various cultural and art-related
activities that would let them maintain their cultural heritage and prevent its
extinction. On the other hand, older people have the power to educate the youth
about the things that would lead to promoting and preserving the culture and arts in
the Philippines, such as practicing basic cultural traditions and patronizing traditional
Filipino products as well as its ethnic roots. Government employees being part of
any culture and art-related agencies play a big part in the country in fulfilling their
duty to use their power to support the culture and arts in the Philippines. They could
start cultural awareness campaigns that could easily be accessed by people,
especially the youth. They could conduct meeting exhibitions in museums and other
places to give awareness to everyone.
