Elon University to Host Discussion on Amanda Sturgill’s New Book “Detecting Deception”
Sturgill will discuss how public figures use deceptive language in the media.

WHAT: Belk Library, located at Elon University, is hosting a discussion on Amanda Sturgill’s new
book “Detecting Deception” on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sturgill will use
real-world examples to analyze the captivation behind deceptive language, and she will give
students the chance to “spot the deception” through examples provided. Some examples will be
pulled from Monday, Sept. 13, 2020 North Carolina’s Senate Debate.

WHO: Amanda Sturgill, an associate professor of journalism at Elon University who specializes
in communication technologies for disadvantaged groups, will discuss how public figures use
deceptive language in the media.

WHEN: The discussion will be held virtually through Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 7 p.m.
to 8 p.m.
