Working with Workspaces

What is a A workspace contains the map window configuration, legend and database

settings. When you start an ARAMIS-DT session, you can use either a new
workspace or open an existing workspace you have saved previously.
The application assigns a default name to each new workspace. When the
workspace is saved for the first time, it should be saved using the Save As
command to assign it a unique filename.

How Does the Once in a workspace, you can view features, and feature attributes. Only one
Workspace
workspace can be open at a time. When you want to open a different
Function?
workspace, ARAMIS-DT closes the currently open workspace.
A workspace must have a project activated in order to perform work such as
editing data, adding data, etc., in the application. You will notice that when
you initiate ARAMIS-DT, that many of the toolbar buttons and pulldown
menus are disabled (except for the workspace management functions). All
edit functions will remain grayed out until you have a project active.

Where is A workspace file resides in a local area network folder, (ex. On your

computer). The data edits are stored on the server and can be retrieved

from a different workstation if desired. A list of the most recently used
workspaces appears at the bottom of the File menu. You can open a
workspace from this list by selecting the filename.

Workspace Customized (saved) workspaces are saved on your local computer and are
Management
managed by each individual user. The use of saved workspaces is optional.
While a saved workspace will take you back to the last location you were at
when you closed the session, there is no requirement to have a customized
(saved) workspace.
As a user, if you choose to create custom workspaces, you will eventually
need to delete those workspaces when no longer needed or you will have a
file management issue on your computer.

Save a New Workspace

Introduction In the previous lesson, we went through the process of creating a workspace
in order to learn about the Menus, Toolbars, set-up options and preferences.
Let's take a closer look at the additional features of a workspace. As you
recall, you begin with these steps:
 Initiate the ARAMIS-DT session.
 Select database connection.
 Open a new workspace.
 Select a workspace template.
Workspaces can be created and/or saved at the beginning of a session or
during a session. Both options will be discussed in this lesson.
It is important to save your workspaces to your
local system rather than the server.

Display Control

What is Display Display Control is used to control the content of each map window. Display
Control?
Control is a resizable, dockable control that is used to determine the
following:
 Specify which features appear in a map window.
 Decide whether to honor the scale range set by the administrator.
 Specify which features can be located by a query.
 Specify which features can be reviewed in Feature Explorer.
 Turn on or off the display of query or trace reports that are output to
a map window.
Query and trace analysis and reports are covered in the ARAMIS-
DT - Analysis training course.

Default Display Control settings have been preconfigured to optimize

displays, so that selected features display only at certain zoom scale ranges.
For example, the counts on cables do not display at a zoom scale of 1:20,000
because they would not be readable, and also because redrawing the screen
at higher zoom scales slows down performance of screen updates. There is
an option to override the default settings and it is covered in “Display
Control Status.”
Each map window has its own Display Control.

Custom Workspace Legends

Introduction When logging into an ARAMIS-DT Workspace, the system default Legend
(Geobase Planning) is set in the default Workspace. Legends define the
Display Control setting for what you see in the Map Window.
Creating a "custom" Workspace Legend allows you to control what is
displayed in the map window without having to use your Display Control to
customize each window. Opening a new map window always defaults to the
default legend (Geobase Planning).
Example: There may be project work that you want only certain features to
display via a custom legend. An Engineer who is responsible for conduit
work might create a custom legend for Infrastructure Only.
If you make extensive changes in Display Control and want to use those
same settings in another map window, you can save time by creating a new
legend that is saved in your workspace, and apply that legend to any new
map window without having to manually go in and set the Display Control
again.
