Samuel farewell and sign

1 Samuel 12

Samuel tells the Israelites how he has listened to them and has given them a king to
lead them.

Samuel’s uprightness is confirmed by the people.

Samuel interacts with the Israelites about how they have complained for a king and
God has given them a king, just like He gave them Moses and Aaron, yet you sinned
and were delivered into the hands of your enemies. The Israelites apologize and
want Samuel to help them.

Samuel says, no… you have a king now. Listen to him and don’t rebel against the
command of the Lord or the king. If you rebel, the hand of the Lord will be against
you, like it was against your fathers.

Watch: I will pray that God send thunder and rain… that’s what happened! He got
the attention of the Israelites and realized they did wrong asking for a king.
Samuel rebukes Saul

1 Samuel 13

Saul was 40 years when he began to rule over Israel.

Philistines lined up to fight against the Israelites. When the men of

Israel saw the situation, they got scared and hid.

Saul still set out with the people, but the people scattered, because they
were fearful (Samuel wasn’t with them). He told the people to bring
him the burnt offering that he might offer to God, because he was
“insecure” and nervous about how the people had scattered. Samuel
rebukes Saul for his disobedience (1 Samuel 13:14).

King Saul’s fall
1 Samuel 15

Samuel told Saul to annihilate the Amalekites. Saul went and killed the Amalekites, but didn’t
completely annihilate them (spared Agag (the king) and the best of the sheep and the oxen and
all that was ‘good’). This grieved Samuel, because he didn’t do what God had commanded him
to do. Though you were little in your own site, didn’t God put you in charge and why didn’t you
listen to the voice of the Lord? Why have you done wrong in the sight of the Lord? Saul tried
to justify himself. “Does the Lord want the sacrifice or to have obedience?” Rebellion is like
witchcraft, stubbornness is like idolatry.

Saul asks his forgiveness, because feared the people (Insecure and fearful).

Because you rejected the word of the Lord, He has rejected you as king. Samuel mourned for
Saul and God grieved that he made Saul king over Israel.
