Antiviral Agents
5. The key viral enzymes that are targets for antiretroviral medicines are;
(a) Reverse transcriptase
(b) Protease
(c) Integrase
(d) Neuraminidase
(e) Viral DNA polymerase
Anthelmintics
1. Albendazole;
(a) blocks glucose uptake, only in the larval form of the parasites
(b) May inhibit microtubule synthesis in nematodes
(c) Can cause alopecia
(d) Absorption can be increased with fatty meal
(e) Has a plasma half-life of 8-12 hours
2. Ivermectin;
(a) Immobilises the parasite
(b) Acts more slowly than diethylcarbamazine in onchocerciasis but causes fewer
systemic and ocular reactions
(c) It is the drug of choice for onchocerciasis, cutaneous larva migrans,
strongyloidiasis and most forms of filariasis
(d) Has some antiviral activity where it has been found to disrupt the viral binding
and cell entry and also inhibits viral replication and assembly
(e) Has a wide tissue distribution and a half-life of about 6 hours.
5. Nematodes include:
(a) Ascaris lumbricodes
(b) Diphylobothrium latum
(c) Taenia solium
(d) Schistosoma mansoni
(e) Strongyloids stercoralis
6. Regarding praziquantel;
(a) It causes paralysis of trematode muscles by reducing membrane permeability to
calcium
(b) It is active against all species of schistosomiasis
(c) Its bioavailability is significantly reduced by co-administering with cimetidine
(d) It is a drug of choice in ocular cysticercosis
(e) Chewing the tablet(s) can induce retching or vomiting
