“Enter” Sign

A sign that must and always be present at gas stations is an "enter" sign. As can be seen in
the picture, there is an arrow pointing down and the words "masuk" or enter. If it is related to the
theory of sausagere's semiotics about the inseparable components of signs, namely the signifier and
the signified, the arrow pointing down is a signified. And the words "enter" is a signifier. Because the
signifier is a set of speech sounds or marks on a page, and the signified is the concept or idea behind
the sign.

“Exit” Sign

Same as the "enter" sign above, the "exit" sign also has the same format and features. But in
this sign, there is a horizontal line on a red background or it can also be called a "strip". Strip is a sign
that prohibits road users from entering a place. So, the point is that drivers who want to enter the
gas station location are prohibited from entering the lane because it is a way out of the gas station.
So, the strip sign is a signified, and the words "exit" are a signifier.

“No Smoking” sign

No Smoking sign is the oldest prohibition and is always enforced at every gas station. People
are already familiar with this type of prohibition. Cigarettes generate heat, and cigarette embers can
be a lighter. The sign that symbolizes this prohibition is also very simple, namely with a picture of a
cigarette and a red cross. From the sources we read, this red cross interprets the prohibition. So, as
shown in the picture there is a picture of a cigarette with a red cross which indicates that smoking in
that area (gas station) is prohibited because it can be dangerous. And from the Saussure’s semiotic
perspective, in the sign there is only a signified without any description or signifier, because the
image is sufficient to provide information or the meaning of the sign.

Camera Prohibition Sign

Using the Camera Electronic devices use batteries which have a risk of starting a fire if
ignited by gasoline fumes. So this sign is really needed to avoid it. Just like other prohibition signs,
this sign has a camera image with a red cross. It also intends to prohibit people who coming to gas
stations to not bring cameras or take pictures.

Fire Prohibition Sign

This next sign is still similar to the no smoking sign. Because this sign indicates that it is
forbidden to start a fire which can be even more dangerous than cigarettes. Just like other
prohibition signs, this sign only contains a picture of a match and is marked with a red cross that will
be easily understood by those who see it.

Cell Phone Prohibition Sign

Electronic devices use batteries and waves. The battery is suspected to be able to create
sparks when it comes in contact with the connector inside the phone. It is feared that sparks, even
the slightest in a place that has gasoline vapors or flammable gases, will trigger a fire. Although it has
not been scientifically proven, there are not a few reports of fires allegedly caused by the use of
cellphones at gas stations. So the gas station forbids the use of cellphones. This sign is also the same
as other prohibition signs that only have a signified, namely an image of a cell phone with a red
cross.
Command To Turn Off The Vehicle Engine

The engine must be turned off to avoid external factors that can be a lighter. This has always
been the safety standard at Shell gas stations around the world. Mae Ascan, a Shell fuel scientist,
said the vehicle's engine was the ignition element. When powered by air and gasoline vapors are
present, it only takes a fraction of a second to ignite a fire. In the picture or sign above there is an
image of a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Such symbols are often used in areas that are
potentially hazardous or require special attention. As in the symbol, there is the word "PERHATIAN".
The triangle sign is a signified and the words "attention" is a signifier to describe the meaning of the
sign. Then the sign contains the sentence "turn off your vehicle engine when refueling" where this
sentence is the content of the command.
