A
JUMP TO PICS

lthough the myth of Icarus has ancient

origins, its use in tattoo art has been more
recent than one might think. One of the first
times this myth was used to inspire tattoo art was in
the 19th century by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi,
who created several sculptures that depicted Icarus
falling into the sea, including one he included in his
famous Statue of Liberty monument in New York City.

Who was Icarus?

In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of famed
Greek inventor Daedalus. In one story, Icarus and his
father attempted to escape from Crete by means of
wings created by Daedalus. While flying over the sea,
Icarus ignored his father’s warning not to fly too close
to the sun; his wings melted and he fell into the sea
and drowned. In another version of the myth, however,
it is Icarus who creates a pair of wax-and-feather
wings for himself and his father with instructions on
how best to use them in order for them both to escape
their prison. But again, Icarus decides that he knows
better than his father does, fails to heed Daedalus’
warnings about flying too high or too low and plunges
into the sea below.

Why Get an Icarus Tattoo?

Getting an Icarus tattoo can be a way of honoring your
Greek heritage, or expressing your love for mythology.
It’s also an impressive tattoo design that will get
people talking when they see it. You can get an Icarus
tattoo on any part of your body, and there are many
ways to do it.

Icarus Tattoo Meaning

Icarus flew too close to the sun, however, and as a
result he lost his wings. To get an idea of what an
Icarus tattoo might mean for you, think about your
goals. If you are trying to overcome something—
perhaps even an addiction—then you might want to
consider having your struggle represented on your
body. There is no better way to remind yourself than
by having it permanently etched into your skin.
Another reason someone might choose an Icarus
tattoo is because they have experienced failure or
loss. Perhaps they failed at business or suffered a
personal tragedy and are trying to start over with new
goals in mind. Whatever your reasons may be for
choosing an Icarus tattoo design, keep in mind that
tattoos have meaning far beyond just their
appearance.

Should You Get a Simple or

Complex Icarus Tattoo?
If you’re thinking about getting an Icarus tattoo, you
might be wondering whether a complex design would
be best. The reality is that many people like their
tattoos simple, while others want something more
intricate. The choice is entirely up to you, and what
feels right for your body and personality. Having said
that, it can be helpful to learn about some of the
different aspects of Icarus tattoos so that you can
choose one that fits with your body and style perfectly.

How Did Icarus Die?

Icarus is a fascinating figure in Greek mythology, and
his fate is both famous and peculiar. According to
Ovid’s Metamorphoses , Daedalus creates two pairs
of wings for himself and his son out of wax and
feathers. The father warns Icarus not to fly too close to
the sun; however, struck by its beauty, Icarus does
exactly that—and melts his wings as a result.
