Lesson Prepare and Interpret

5 Technical Drawing
What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of use of drafting tools and equipment. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.
Content Standard
The learners demonstrate and understanding of concepts and underlying
principles in preparing and interpreting technical drawings
Performance Standard
The learners shall be able to prepare and interpret technical drawings and
work plans accurately
Most Essential Learning Competencies
LO 1. Analyze signs, symbols, and data
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Identify signs and symbols used in technical drawing
2. Analyze data indicated in the technical drawing

Introduction

On the first three lessons of this module, you have learned the different tools in
drawing, how to maintain it and perform mensuration and calculation. In this
lesson, you will be dealing on the different alphabet of lines and how are you
going to prepare technical drawings and interpret them. You have to recall the
previous topics of this module. Why? First, in order to draw you need to use
different tools, second, in order to interpret the technical drawing, you need to
perform mensuration and calculation.

Technical drawing is also called functional drawing because it use to represent

the design of objects that needs to be constructed or formed. The Alphabet of
Lines is needed for technical drawings because it used to describe shape, size,
hidden surfaces, interior detail, and alternate positions of parts.

This lesson will help you to understand technical drawings and how to interpret
it. Don’t worry because activities that were prepared for you are simple and easy.

What’s In
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS

Write your computations on a separate sheet of paper.

1.Jerry has two pieces of ropes that are 90 cm and 60 cm long respectively.
How many meters of ropes does he have in all?
2.Dindo finished a 1500-meter race. How many kilometers did he run?

2
3.Our lot is 8 m by 9 m. What is the equivalent measurements in
centimeters?
4.The municipal hall is about 5000 m away from the school. What is the
equivalent distance in kilometers?
5.I am 190.5 cm tall. What is my height in inches?

The Alphabet of Lines

Technical drawings give us clear and accurate on how the object will be
made. It shows accurately the information on how to create the product.
Technical drawing is based on line symbols. Line symbols in the technical
drawing is also called the Alphabet of Lines. Lines in technical drawings are part
of a specialized graphic language that is standardized throughout industry. Each
type of line has a very precise symbolic meaning.
KINDS OF ILLUSTRATION DESCRIPTION
LINES
1. Object or Thick dark line use to show
Visible Lines outline of object, visible edges
and surfaces.
2. Hidden Lines Short dash lines use to show
non visible edges. Usually
shows as medium thickness.
3. Center Lines Long and short dash lines.
Usually indicates centre of
holes, circles and arcs. Line is
thin and dark.
4. Section Lines Thin lines drawn at 45 use
to show surfaces of object that
has been cut.
5.Extension Thin and dark line use to show
Lines the starting and ending of
dimension.
6.Dimension Thin and dark lines use to
show the size (span) of an

object with a numeric value.
Usually terminates with
arrowheads.
7. Long Break A medium thick line consis-
Line ting of broken and straight
lines drawn alternately. This
is also known as the limiting
line.
8.Short Break A thick line drawn in free-
Line hand to show details that a
part has been cut off or
broken out.
9. Leader Line Medium line with arrow- head
to show notes or label for
size or special information
about a feature.
