The current carrying capacity (or ampacity) of a cable depends on many of the installation properties and conditions. In this paper the effects on* ampacity of conductor size, ambient temperature, bonding arrangement, duct size, soil thermal resistivity, resistivity and size of backfill (or duct bank) and depth of installation for underground installations are presented. For cables air the effects on ampacity of the intensity of solar radiation, the spacing from the wall and the grouping of cables are analyzed. For riser pole installations the effect of the solar radiation, wind speed, ventilation and diameter of the duct are shown. + Cable crossings-derating considerations. lI. In the first part of the paper a mathematical model for calculation of derating factors was presented. In this paper, a practical numerical example is considered with a 138 kV pipe-type cable crossing a 10 kV distribution circuit. Underground Raceway Module of ETAP ETAP software has available an Underground Raceway Module based on Std IEC 60287 or the NEC and Recommended Practice IEEE Std 399 accepted Neher- McGrath method for these calculations. It determinates steady-stated and transient conductor temperature for the specified cable loading: and raceway system configuration, considering the effect of heat generated by neighboring cables and ‘external heat sources. ‘This module is integrated with the cables in. one-line diagram of the project and hence with the load flow results (to perform the cable temperature calculations the load flow was calculated considering the absorbed power of each motor & static load). Additionally ETAP Underground Raceway Module has two equivalent options for cable ampacity calculation known as Uniform-Ampacity Calculation and Uniform- Temperature Calculation. Uniform-Ampacity Calculation: The cable ampacity is calculated by loading of all cables until the temperature of the hottest cable reaches the maximum allowable limit (ETAP uses the Neher-McGrath method for this application) easing the Uniform-Temperature Calculation: This calculation adjusts individual cable loading to maintain uniform temperature throughout the raceway system. The cable ampacity is obtained when the cable temperature reaches the maximum allowable limit (ETAP uses the Neher-McGrath method for this application). “This document is property of TR Group. The method presented on Std JEEE 399 is based on the concept of an adjustment (de-rating) factor applied against a base ampacity to provide the allowable cable ampacity. This adjustment factor is used to determine the cable ampacity when the operating ambient temperature and/or the maximum allowable conductor temperature differ from the original temperatures at which the cable base ampacity is specified. The expression for calculating the effect of changes in the conductor temperature and ambient temperatures on the base ampacity is given by the nex equation Ft=[(Po-Ta)l(To-Ta)x(234.5+Te)(234.5+T'c)]" (Cooper conductor) Where Te: It is the conductor rated temperature in °C at which the base ampacity is specified. Tc: It is the maximum allowable conductor operating temperature in °C. Ta: It is the ambient temperature in °C at which tha base ampacity is specified. a: Itis the actual (maximum) soil ambient temperature in °C. Fh: It is the adjustment factor to account for the differences in the soil thermal resistivity, from the RHO of 90 °C-cm/W at which the base ampacities are specified. Fg: Itis the adjustment factor to account for cable grouping. Note: For cable separations other than those considered in the Tables 13-8 and 13-9 of the Std IEEE 399 (No spare ducts, non-metallic conduits of 5” with center-to-center spacing of 7.5”), one can use one’s own judgment for estimating the value of Fg or use a computer program directly without on initial approximation for the grouping effect. In general, increasing the horizontal and vertical spacing between the cables would decrease the temperature interference between them and, therefore, increase the value of Fg (Source: Std IEEE 399, Section 13.4.3 Grouping Adjustment Factors). ‘Ths documents property of TR Group, Reproduction there is forbidcen, ti ‘SAUDI KAYAN PETROCHEMICAL COMPLEX - PHENOLICS FACILITIES PROJECT # 01910 CABLE CALCULATIONS DOCUMENT# 500-650-0006 PAGE 12.038 TECNICAS REUNIDAS To obtain the values of the adjustment factors Fth and Fg, a computer program was develop based on the Neher-McGrath method and was used to calculate the conductor temperatures for various arrangements. The ampacity adjustment tables presented on the Std IEEE 399 are based on the following simplifying assumptions: a) Cables for some voltage ratings and sizes are combined for the Fth table. For some applications where RHO is considerably high (more than 180°C-cm/W) and a mixed group of cables are installed, the interdependencies of the adjustment factors for different cable sizes may not be negligible and up to a 4% error in the overall conductor temperatures may be expected. b) The effect of the temperature rise due to the insulation dielectric losses is | neglected for the temperature adjustment factor Ft. Note: Hoverer this effect can be included in Ft by adding the temperature rise due to the dielectric losses to the ambient temperatures Ta and T’a. ©) The often negligible effects of any applicable sheath, shield, and metallic conduit losses are ignored. Note: In the final design case where accuracy and precision are required, the previously mentioned assumptions cannot be disregarded, and the ampacities obtained from the manual method can be used as an initial approximation for computer simulation of the actual design condition (Source: Std IEEE 399, Section 13.4 Ampacity Adjustment Factors). Additionally large variations in the duct bank depth, or larger soil thermal resistivity, may significantly affect ampacities (Source: Std IEEE 399, Section 13.5 Example) = EXAMPLE To illustrate the limitations for some applications of the manual method presented on the Standard JEEE 399, Section 13.1, a 3 x 5 duct bank system (3 rows, 5 columns, depth = 30" = 76.2 cm) is considered.
