After all the questions have answered, it is time to gain new learning. Ready, set, and
learn!
What is It

The discipline of social sciences are viewed as those that deal with “ human society, societal
groups, individuals in their relationships with others or institutions of societies and material
goods as expression of human cohabitation”(Bayer,1992).This definition shows the difficulty of
grasping all aspects of social sciences as opposed to natural science , which have a common
perspective rather than a common subject of study. The distinction between social and cultural
sciences and humanities is controversial.

There are some of the ways by which the social sciences would attempt to explain social
phenomena. The disciplines of anthropology, economics, history, human geography, political science,
psychology and sociology heighten our understanding of social, economic and political worlds. One’s
experience of society alone would provide the basis for understanding the behavior of people and
institutions, and for making predictions about it. After all, these experiences do help us navigate
social life.
There is so much gain from studying the social science more importantly, these discipline helps us
develop the ability to reflect on our own biases and beliefs and link these to the broader structures
that engender them. The following are some of its definition:
1. Social Science is the branch of science devoted to the study of societies and
the relationships among individuals within those societies.
2. Social Science is a body of knowledge and thought pertaining to human affairs as distinguished
from sticks, stones, stars and physical objects.
3. Social Science is a discipline that invite an exploration of other ways of seeing, or
taking into consideration other experiences, and looking at things from different
perspectives and lenses, in order to arrive at the deeper analysis of why things happen
the way they do. As such, we can be more inclusive and informed in making
contributions to social change and the betterment of the society.
4. Social Science consists of disciplines that enable us to comprehend the complexity of a social
phenomenon-be it historical, social , cultural, psychological , linguistic, economic or political .

SOCIAL NATURAL
SCIENCE SIMILARITIES SCIENCE
After all the questions have answered, it is time to gain new learning. Ready, set, and
learn!

What is It

There are a number of similarities between the natural and social sciences, which include the use
of similar methods and partly overlapping epistemological and ontological stance, i.e. stances
regarding the creation of knowledge and the nature of reality. However , there are also a number of
elements that distinguish the two, such is their different origins, subjects of study and limitations.
Following definitions of natural and social sciences, these elements will be contrasted in the
following:
Natural Science defines as “discipline that deal only with natural event(i.e. independent and
dependent variables in nature ) using scientific methods”.(Ledoux 2002,p.34)

Origin- the birth of natural science is marked by changing world views introduced by
Renaissance thinkers who questioned earlier explanations about the world and turned more
systematic methods of investigations.
Subject of Study-the aim of natural science is to discover the laws that rule the world (Buchel,
1992)The focus lies on the natural and not on the social world, although the differentiation is not
always simple.
Methods- Natural Science methods are possibly the most popular methods of scientific
investigation. Compared to the social science, the natural science rely more on mathematically based
methods because of more uniform nature of natural sciences and the countability that enables the
scientists to apply mathematics(Buchel,1992,p.228)
Philosophical stances-with thinkers including Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn, fundamental
criticism of natural science approaches has emerged during the 20 th century. Before Popper, the
way in which knowledge is created was not questioned by most scientist, most of whom adopted and
inductive epistemology, in which a finding is regarded as general truth when a sufficient number of
experiments have led to the same outcome.
Limitations-among the most common limitations of natural science research are technical and
financial boundaries, both of which have been constantly pushed in history. Technical boundaries
severe when expensive are related to the inability you conduct precise measures while Financial
boundaries play a role in most research projects, but can become especially severe when expensive
equipment has to be employed.
Social Science-are those bodies of learning and study which recognizes the simultaneous and
mutual action of physical and no-physical stimuli which produce social relation (James High )
Origin -It is much younger than the natural sciences. Even though the social interactions in a
society have probably been of interest for many centuries, scientific studies of social interactions
began as late as during the 19th century with sociological publications.
Subject of study – in contrast to the natural sciences , the study objects of social sciences can
take notice of the forecast of scientist. Subject of the study are the phenomena of social interaction
and coexistence .It can rather be classified by their common perspective then through a specific
subject study .
Methods-observation is one of the mainly used method, as a social science counterpart of the
natural sciences experiment. It is much more difficult to carry out an experiment in social ,than in
natural sciences. The reason therefore lies in the uncontrollability of social environments.
Philosophical stances- in contrast to the natural sciences ,there was much more debate
about the question of what is acceptable knowledge among social scientist. Among the first popular
stances advocated by the social scientists including Compte is the positive position who received
criticisms from interpretivism , who argue that the social reality cannot be measured in the same way
as natural events.(Bryman , 2008)
Limitations-Studies in social sciences are often limited by various factors including the need to
base findings on interpretations, the complexity of a field in which single variables cannot be
controlled for easily, as well as ethical issues and financial problems.
