DESCRIBE THE

PHILIPPINES

BIODIVBERSITY
WHAT IS PHILIPPINE
BIODIVERSITY?
The Philippines is one of 18 mega-
biodiverse countries of the world,
containing two-thirds of the earth's
biodiversity and between 70% and 80%
of the world's plant and animal species.

WHAT IS THE EXAMPLE OF

BIODIVERSITY IN THE PHILIPPINES?
Gingers, begonias, gesneriads, orchids,
pandanus, palms, and dipterocarps are
particularly high in endemic species.
IMPORTANCE OF
BIOLOGICAL
DIVERSITY
EVERY LIVING THING, FROM PEOPLE TO
ORGANISMS WE KNOW LITTLE ABOUT LIKE
BACTERIA, FUNGI, AND INVERTEBRATES, IS
INCLUDED IN BIODIVERSITY. THIS INCLUDES NOT
ONLY SPECIES THAT WE PERCEIVE TO BE RARE,
THREATENED, OR ENDANGERED.

WHY IS BIODIVERSITY IMPORTANT?

Biodiversity is important to most
aspects of our lives. We value
biodiversity for many reasons, some
utilitarian, some intrinsic.
WHY IS BIODIVERSITY
IMPORTANT?
IMPORTANCE
Biodiversity also holds value for potential benefits
not yet recognized, such as new medicines and
other possible unknown services. Biodiversity has
cultural value to humans as well, for spiritual or
religious reasons for instance. Most facets of our
life depend on biodiversity. We value biodiversity
for a variety of factors, some intrinsic and some
pragmatic. This means that we appreciate
biodiversity for both what it offers to humanity
and for its own sake.

HOW CHANGES IN THE
ENVIRONMENT CAN
AFFECT SPECIES
EXTINCTION.
CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT AFFECT SPECIES IN A
WAY THAT IT DESTROYS AND TAKE AWAY THE HABITAT
OF THE SPECIES. SPECIES CAN GO EXTINCT AS A RESULT
OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES, INCLUDING
VARIATIONS IN TEMPERATURE, PRECIPITATION, AND
OTHER ELEMENTS. GLOBAL WARMING, FOREST FIRES,
AND ICE CAP MELTING ARE THREE FACTORS THAT CAN
LEAD TO EXTINCTION. THE EXTINCTION OF THE SPECIES
ON WHICH A SPECIES DEPENDS MIGHT LEAD TO
COEXTINCTION.
WHAT CAUSES SPECIES
Species endangerment and extinction have three

EXTINCTION? major anthropogenic causes—overhunting or

overharvesting; introduction of nonnative species,

including the spread of disease; and habitat

degradation or loss. All three causes probably were

factors in prehistoric as well as modern times.

UPDATE ON THE NUMBER OF SPECIES IN THE
WORLD

Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including

plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. Scientists have

estimated that there are around 8.7 million species of

plants and animals in existence.

FACTS ABOUT

BIODIVERSITY
The Philippines is also one of the world’s

biodiversity hotspots with at least 700

threatened species, thus making it one of

the top global conservation areas. The

national list of threatened faunal species

was established in 2004 and includes 42

species of land mammals, 127 species of

birds, 24 species of reptiles and 14 species

of amphibians. In terms of fishes, the

Philippines counts at least 3,214 species,

of which about 121 are endemic and 76

threatened.
In 2007, an administrative order issued by the

Department of Environment and Natural

Resources established a national list of

threatened plant species, indicating that 99

species were critically endangered, 187 were

endangered, 176 vulnerable as well as 64 other

threatened species.
HOW BIODIVERSITY

CHANGED OVERTIME
The traditional view is that

species have increased in

diversity continuously over

the past 200 million years,

particularly in the last 100

million, leading to more

diversity now than ever

before. But some recent

studies suggest biodiversity

has tended to stay largely the

same, with only occasional

surges.
