1. Overview
1.1 Functions for MTK phone models
RSD NC is a Windows based application developed by Motorola. RSD allows Motorola
handsets to be safely upgraded with minimal user input.
The RSD NC client application supports the following types of operations for MTK
phone models:
 Phone Firmware Upgrade--upgrading a phone to the latest software by USB cable
connection.
 Multi Refurbish--Multi phones upgrade with the same model at one time according
to configuration in matrix file by UART connection.
 Seed Stock-- Multi-phones upgrade based on selected carrier and model by UART
connection.
 Enhanced Flash-- Multi-phones upgrade according to selected file by UART or USB
connection.

2.1 NC MTK Phone Firmware Upgrade
2.1.1 Description
Firmware Upgrade allows upgrading a phone to the latest software. In this option, the
phone will remain in the possession of the end user and the phone will remain in the same
carrier network. Only support one phone model at the same time and USB cable
connection.

2.1.2 Firmware Upgrade Procedures


1. Launch RSD NetConnected application and Login.
2. Connect a phone to PC with USB cable.
Here takes following steps as example to show how Multi-refurbish works:
Step1: download software
Step2: flex

3. After phone information window displays phone data, select Phone Firmware
Upgrade Option from Utilities Pane.

4. Press “Start firmware upgrade” button to do firmware upgrade.


5. When below page pops up, user needs to switch MTK phone to flash mode manually.
Make sure the device is power off, long press Download-Key and connect the device
with USB cable to PC, don't release the Download-Key until UI is switched to next
step.

6. NC will do firmware upgrade automatically. Following are the pages which indicate
the current operation.

7. When below page pops up, user needs to switch phone to COM mode manually.
Detach phone from USB cable, restart it by pressing power button and connect the
device to PC with USB cable again, select COM mode from phone’s UI.

8. NC will start flexing automatically. Following are the pages which indicate the
current operation.

9. After flex is done, user needs to switch phone to COM mode manually. The operation
is the same as step7.

10. After all operations are done, success will be shown.

2.2 NC MTK Multi Refurb

2.2.1 Description
Multi-refurbish provides a way to restore the multi-phones with the same phone model
and same chipset to the factory configuration simultaneously. All user data content will
be removed from phones. The refurbish configuration will be specific based on individual
carrier or Motorola service center requirements. Calibration data can be backed up and
restored during the process. At most 8 phones with same model and same chipset can be
supported at the same time. In this example, two phones are used. Only USB2UART
cable is supported for connecting phone model to PC.

Here takes following steps as example to show how Multi-refurbish works:


Step1: backup NVRAM
Step2: blank format
Step3: download software

Step4: restore NVRAM


Step5: flex

This example is for switching customer name, for example from TF to non-TF(ROW). So
the steps need to include blank format operation.

2.2.2 Multi Refurb Procedure


1. Launch RSD application and select Multi Refurb from left utility pane.
2. In the Main window, following page will be shown.

2. Connect the phones with USB2UART cable to PC. Phone information is updated on
each line, press “Start” button to start process.

4. SLA login dialog will pop up and user needs to input username, password and press
OK to pass SLA check. During the operation, the status of the phone will be updated
correspondingly on each line.

5. When below status is showed, user needs to restart phone manually. Make sure phone
model is in power off state first and then press power button to power it up. Then process
can continue and status will be updated from UI accordingly.

6. After all the operations finish successfully, “PASS” will be showed in Result field and
the first column will be marked as green.

2.3 NC MTK Seed Stock

2.3.1 Description
Seed-Stock is similar with Multi Refurbish while the user can select the carrier and model
which the phone wants to be flashed to be with. At most 8 phones with same model and
same chipset can be supported at the same time. In this example, two phones are used.
Only USB2UART cable is supported for connecting phone model to PC.

Here takes following steps as example to show how Seed-Stock works:


Step1: backup NVRAM
Step2: blank format
Step3: download software
Step4: restore NVRAM
Step5: flex

2.3.2 Seed-stock Procedure


1. Launch RSD application and select Seed-Stock from left utility pane.
2. In the Main window, following page will be shown.

3. Attach the phones to PC with USB2UART cables in power-off state.

4. Select the carrier and model which is matched with the phone. After carrier and model
are selected, the “Start” button will be enabled.
In the Main window, “Restore NVRAM Only” is unchecked by default for the phone
which supports backup and restore NVRAM feature. If user wants to backup NVRAM
and restore NVRAM both, just keep it unchecked. If it is checked, NC will not backup
NVRAM but still restore NVRAM.

6. Press start button to do the flash. SLA login dialog will pop up and user needs to input
username and password to pass SLA check. Then operation can go to the next step.
During the operation, the status of the phone will be updated correspondingly on each
line.

5. When below status is showed, user needs to restart phone manually. Make sure phone
model is in power off state first and then press power button to power it up. Then NC can

2.4 NC MTK Enhanced Flash

2.4.1 Description
Enhanced Flash is used to upgrade multi-phones software with the same phone model
and same chipset according to selected file. NC MTK can support flashing no more than
8 devices concurrently. Here takes two devices doing software download as example.

2.4.2 Enhanced Flash Procedure


1. Launch RSD application and select Enhanced Flash from left utility pane.
2. In the Main window, following page will be shown.

3. Select software (MZF file) or flex file which will be used for upgrade first.
For downloading software (MZF file), both UART2USB and USB cable are supported.
For downloading flex file, only USB cable is supported.

4. With USB2UART connection to download software, user needs to connect phone in


power off state.

With USB connection to download software, user needs to connect phone in flash mode.
Make sure the device is power off, long press Download-Key and connect the device
with USB cable to PC, don't release the Download-Key until the device is shown on the
GUI (“Connected”). Repeat the step to connect another device.

With USB connection to do flex, user needs to connect phone in normal mode.

5. Press Start button to start upgrade process.


With USB2UART connection to download software, user needs to press power button of
phone model to continue process.

2.5 NC MTK Phone Recovery

2.5.1 Description
Recovery is supported for broken phones. Phone can be connected in flash mode,
firmware will be flashed in to recover phone. Only one phone model at the same time and
USB cable is supported for recovery.

2.5.2 Recovery Procedure


1. Launch RSD application and login.
2. Connect a phone which is in flash mode to PC with USB cable. NC will ask user to
select the matched Carrier Name and Model name of the phone just as the following page
shown.

3. Select correct Carrier Name and Model Name and press "submit" to start the recovery.

4. When following UI pops up, user needs to switch phone model to COM mode
manually. Detach phone from USB cable, restart it by pressing power button and connect

5. After recovery of the phone finishes successfully, the phone information will be
updated and following page will be shown to the end user.
