LETTER TO THE FAMILY

Dear Family,

Welcome to Guess What! Home Booklet1, a booklet full of fun

activities and games to revise English as a family at home. Each
time your child completes a unit of Guess What!1 at school,
they will bring the booklet home to show you what they have
been studying in class.

Guess What! Home Booklet1 has been written to coincide with

the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
(CEFR) (towards level A1), and with the Starters level of the
Cambridge English: Young Learners exam.

We invite you to take part in your child’s experience of learning English.

You don’t need to have a high level of English to do this. It is your
support and enthusiasm that will keep your child motivated.

The booklet is organised into nine different topics and is based

around the Fun Family. Each topic includes the following activities:

Hidden object: A member of the Fun Family asks your child to

find a hidden object on the double-page. When they find it,
they go to the Treasure hunt page (page 24), tick it and colour
it in on the Treasure map.

Vocabulary and grammar: This activity practises

the main vocabulary and grammar from the unit.
When your child has completed it, encourage
them to read out their answers. You can also ask
questions, or ask your child to say sentences about
themselves, as appropriate.

3
Reading: In the reading activity, your child reads a poem at home and then does the
activity.

Emotions: The Alan the alien activity recaps on different emotions

with the ‘help’ of a friendly alien called Alan. Ask your child to show
you their answers. You can also talk about situations when your
child might feel that emotion, and about positive ways to handle it.

Cross-curricular (CLIL) topics: There are two comprehension

activities that focus on interesting cross-curricular (CLIL) topics.
Your child will have the opportunity to relate them to their home
environment and to their life outside school. You can also ask them
questions about the pictures, or get them to ask you!

Extra activities: The Fun at home section at the bottom of each page suggests some
simple ideas for you and your child to communicate in English.

Self-evaluation: The Are you a Fun Kid? section at the end of each unit is the self-
evaluation activity. Look at the pictures with your child and read the Now I know…
statements. This is the opportunity to ask your child if the statement is true for them.
If it is, they trace around the circle and colour in the pictures. Offer lots of praise: it is
important for your child to value their own progress.

We hope you and your child have fun in English with

Guess What! Home Booklet1!
