1.0. INTRODUCTION
An E-commerce website requires an appropriate strategy for successful design
and implementation. Everything is required to plan from scratch to the end of the
website. The E-commerce sector is seen exponential growth thus a new option will
easily be part of this regatta of commercial websites. The E-commerce website will
feature an online shopping facility for various fashion products under a single web
space. The proposed web application will allow business personnel to make their
total business using it and increase their reachability thousands of times more than

1.1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY
E-commerce is fast gaining ground as an accepted and used business paradigm.
More and more business houses are implementing web sites providing
functionality for performing commercial transactions over the web. It is reasonable
to say that the process of shopping on the web is becoming commonplace.

The objective of this project is to develop a general-purpose e-commerce store


where any product (such as books, CDs, computers, mobile phones, electronic
items, and home appliances) can be bought from the comfort of home through the
Internet. However, for implementation purposes, this paper will deal with an online
ecommerce store.

An online store is a virtual store on the Internet where customers can browse the
catalog and select products of interest. The selected items may be collected in a
shopping cart. At checkout time, the items in the shopping cart will be presented as
an order. At that time, more information will be needed to complete the
transaction.

Usually, the customer will be asked to fill or select a billing address, a shipping
address, a shipping option, and payment information such as a credit card number.
An email notification is sent to the customer as soon as the order is placed.

1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

As a Computer Science student we had to go into the commerce department to


learn some basic commerce topics to increase our intellectual understanding on the
project at hand. Building a good E-commerce web application was not an easy task
because of the existing problems surrounding commerce.

Traditionally, customers are used to buying the products at the real, in

other words, factual shops or supermarkets. It needs the customers to show up

in the shops in person, and walk around different shopping shelves, and it also

needs the owners of shops to stock, exhibit, and transfer the products required

by customers. It takes labour, time and space to process these operations.

Furthermore, the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and other transmittable


diseases/viruses has caused a lot of changes in our lifestyle, people fearing to get
outside their homes, transportation almost shut down and social distancing
becoming all the more important. Big to small scale business that relied on the
traditional, incur a lot of consequence due to the lockdown issues.

Some tend to more towards using social media platforms like Facebook to sell their
product. However, the social media platforms have been beneficial for marketing
purposes alone but leaves the whole task of customer and massive order
management via direct messaging (DM), which takes a lot of time to respond to all
customers. In addition, everyone tends to use social media, posing a great
challenge to differentiate between scammers (fraudsters) and legit sellers.

1.3. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES


Online shopping is one of the most popular activities on the internet. Millions of
people around the world buy products online every day. This is due to the
convenience and variety of products that can be found on websites. The e-
commerce website design and its development are very important for any website
to do well in the e-commerce market. However, there are still a lot of
misconceptions about the development and design of e- commerce websites.
Therefore, it is necessary to identify the aims of an e-commerce website in order to
better understand them. An e-commerce website serves the same purpose as any
other business website - namely, to provide information to potential customers
about the company and the products or services it sells.

and provide visitors with relevant information. Consumers should be able to find
what they are looking for quickly and easily and be able to purchase the products
they want with ease. The aims of an e-commerce website are as follows:

This report contains a comprehensive understanding of how an online trading
system works. It tends to cover the Administrative view and also the customers
view in an E-commerce website. E-Commerce is about; buying and selling,
marketing, servicing delivery and payment of products, service and information
over internet, intranets, extranets and other networks, between an inter-networked
enterprise and its prospects; customers suppliers and other business partners. It
provides an easier method of buying and selling, bringing ease to both
manufacturers and customers.

1.5. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

With the aid of an efficient information system, manufacturers can be able to


react quickly by giving out information about changes in the market, latest
products and ongoing promotions to consumers. An E-commerce web application
not only saves time and money, but also minimizes administrative efforts and cost.
It provides an avenue to market products to a whole new audience. Here are a few
importance of an E-commerce website application;

However, there are some potential limitations to this growing industry.

The biggest drawback of e-commerce is the issue of security. With online


transactions taking place over the internet, there is always a risk that the customer's
credit card information will be stolen or misused by unscrupulous individuals. To
minimize this risk, online retailers must implement strict security measures to
ensure that customer information is secure and protected at all times.

Another potential drawback of e-commerce is the issue of credit card fraud. It is not
uncommon for dishonest retailers to use stolen credit card numbers to process
fraudulent transactions. To avoid losing sales due to credit card fraud, online
retailers should implement a system of checks and balances to detect and prevent
fraud before it occurs.
