I. Essential Ideas (10 minutes)

All elements in communication play a vital role in the entire process, each of these elements has
to be understood well to achieve successful communication.

A. SENDER
The sender is the initial source of information sometimes commonly reffered to as the
encoder.
B. RECEIVER
The receiver is the target of communciation. He is the reason why communication is reated.
He intially decodes the message but could later on encode reactions or feedback.
C. MESSAGE
It is the heart of communication. It is the senders’s translated ideas, feeling, attitudes, or
emotionsin a form of signals or symbols.
D. MEDIUM
It is the means or the channel by which the message is sent through from the sender to the
receiver.
E. FEEDBACK
It is a response that the receiver gives to the sender to inform the latter if the message sent
has gotten across effectively or not.
F. BARRIER/NOISE
It is anything that interferes with the transmission of the message by the sender to the
receiver. DeVito (1986:209) provides three types of noise namely: physical noise also called
environmental barrier, psychological noise or emotional barrier, and semantic noise or
language barrier.

II. Learning Experiences (15 minutes)

Directions: In groups of 3 to 5, based on your own understanding on the elements of
communication, create a model that will provide a visualization on how these elements of
communication interact and work with each other.

B. Processing Questions (5 minutes)


1. How do the elements contribute to the entire process of communication?
2. What are examples of things that can cause miscommunication?
3. How can you ensure effective communication?

C. Lifelong Learning (10 minutes)


Direction: Answer the following question.

Today, you have learned that communication is important to establish relationships. There are
elements to be considered in communicating to ensure understanding between and among each
other. Thus, all elements play a vital role in the entire process to achieve success communication.
State one instance in your life where you experienced conflict due to miscommunication and
explain how you were able to solve it.
