THE PROBLEMS AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter contains the background Rationale, Theoretical, Statement of the

problems, Assumption of the body, Scope and delimitation and the Definition of terms

which focuses on the impact of academic performances among the senior high students of

Bonuan Boquig National High School during pandemic.

Rationale

Modular Distance Learning is in the form of individualized instruction that allows

learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy,

whichever is applicable in the context of the learner and other learning resources. Modular

learning is the current learning modality of primary education in the Bonuan Boquig

increased the academic performance of the student, modular learning is the way for a

student to gain some knowledge to learn even we are still  in pandemic ,The often users of

modular learning is young people who don't have the tools to access online learning to

continue studying, but many young people have stopped to go to school  because of the

difficulties of life even if we say it's better to learn but for them they'll be more willing to

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has spread worldwide, affecting

almost all countries and territories. Educational pedagogies were modified during the

COVID-19 pandemic to minimize interruption to teaching. One approach has been the

distance learning problem-based learning (PBL) tutorial utilizing the online peer-to-peer

platform. The aim of this study was comparing the performance of students using distance

learning PBL tutorials using with that of students utilizing the conventional face-to-face

approach. (https://campaignforeducation.org/en/press-centre/coronavirus-dont-let-

The impact is far reaching and has affected learning during this academic year or

even more in the coming days. The research shows that the implementation of modular

learning had a positive impact on student’s outcomes and the level of student’s satisfaction

with the education process increased. There is significant difference in the number of

hours spent sleeping, studying and using social media before and during pandemic.

However, there is no significant difference in students’ academic performance before and

during pandemic. Several schools, colleges and universities have discontinued face-to-face

teaching. (https://bmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12909-020-

There is a pressing need to innovate and implement alternative educational and

assessment strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided us with an opportunity to

pave the way for introducing digital learning. the limited exposure of teachers to online

teaching, the information gap, a non-conducive environment for learning at home, equity

and academic excellence in terms of higher education. This article evaluates the impact of

the COVID-19 pandemic on teaching and learning processes across the world.

The Philippines is in the process of adapting to the new normal form of education at

present, and continuous innovations of educators and active involvement of other

stakeholders are the driving force for its success Some of children do not like modular

learning. Generally, the children don’t like online and modular learning, they get weary

and restlessness sets in. Be understanding with your students as it’s not the same as the

regular normal classes prior to the pandemic. In our country it has not been easy, because

not all students have the ability to join a virtual class, the use of modular sheets is not

easy to understand because no one teaches the activities. There is no statistically

significant relationship between students’ academic performance and the number of hours

they sleep and the use of social media during the pandemic. Those on the other side of the

country don’t have much of a Covid infection in there are but still do modular learning.

For the continuity of education and for every school to still attain its mission and vision

which is to provide quality education to every Filipino learner, the Department of

Education implemented the Modular Distance Learning. The learners may ask assistance

from the teacher via e-mail, telephone, text message/instant messaging among others and

Modular learning in Dagupan City based on are observation most of students picked

modular learning because more young people struggle to find a device to attend an online

class, most of students live in squatter areas so it means they can’t afford to buy a device

so they can attend an online class, modular learning is very helpful to them to continue

their education by answering some modules. Modular learning can be in printed or digital

format. According to Mark Antony Llego (2020), modular distance learning is learners‟

learning at their own pace, in their own way and using self-learning modules (SLMs). It

can be printed/digitized format/electronic copy that is appropriate to learners, and other

learning resources like learners‟ materials, textbook, activity sheets, study guides and

other learning materials. Learners can access electronic copies of learning materials on a

computer, tablet PC, or smartphones. CDs, DVDs, USB storage and computer-based

applications can be used to deliver e-learning materials, including offline E-books. The

teacher takes responsibility for monitoring the progress of learners. While the learners

may ask help from them via-email, telephone, text messaging/instant messaging, etc.

Teachers shall do home visits to learners if the learners need remediation or assistance in

his/her module. Any member of the family or other stakeholders in the community can

aid. In addition, modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses self-learning

modules (SLM) and follows the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by

DepEd. City administrator Vladimir Mata has assured the city government is giving its all-

requirements of the learners. (https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1110185)

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine and consider the views,

suggestions, and effective ways in modular learning of Bonuan Buquig National High

School to Senior High School Students.

Conceptual Framework

Modular learning is the current learning modality of primary education in the

Philippines where traditional teacher-student practice has now been shifted to mother-

child since mothers are the immediate assistants of their child in modular learning.

Furthermore, the researchers seek to determine the disadvantages and advantages of the

impact of modular learning to academic performance of Senior High School Students at

Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework of the study. It consists of two variables,

disadvantage of modular learning as an independent variable and advantage of modular

as the dependent variable.

The input of the study are the disadvantages and advantages of modular learning.

Next, the process of the study includes surveying Senior High School Students. Lastly, the

output of the study are the suggested effective ways in modular learning.

As shown in figure 1, the disadvantages of modular as an independent variable

pertain to how students will need more self; discipline and motivation, as well as more

preparation time and a lot of clear benefits for teachers and staffs, as well as more

administrative resources to track students and administer different modules.

Disadvantages such as additional family responsibilities, loneliness and technical

difficulties. In general, Senior High School Students dislike online and modular learning,

they become tired and restless as a result.

Therefore, in another variable, the advantages of modular learning as dependent

variable. Modular learning can provide many benefits to students of all types, including

the acquisition of new skills, increased flexibility, the ability to learn at their own speed,

family time, and problem solving. When compared the traditional teaching strategies, this

modular approach is more effective in the teaching learning method since students learn

at their own pace.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter merely focuses on the related conceptual and research literature of the

study that gave the researchers an enough background in understanding the study.

Furthermore, this chapter utterly discusses the modular learning: the advantages and

disadvantages of modular learning, affect academic performance of SHS students,

suggested effective ways to help SHS students in modular learning, and how it will help

the researchers to fully understand the research study.

Conceptual Literature

This section shows the research literature related to the impact od modular learning

to academic performance among Senior High School Students in Bonuan Buquig National

High School during pandemic.

Advantages of Modular learning

The evolution of one advantage of using modules for training is improved self-study

or study abilities. Students participate actively in studying the principles of the topic. They

develop a sense of responsibility by carrying out the module's responsibilities Increasing

their ability to study on their own, with little or no aid from others. The instructor is

capable of monitoring the kids' progress. Students can contact the teacher using e-mail,

text message, or messenger chat. Whenever feasible, the teacher should pay youngsters

who require remediation or help at home a visit Guardians and parents Once a week, they

receive printed modules from their children's teachers. Before the conclusion of the week,

students should have completed all of the assignments and gotten their grades. The

instructor is in charge of keeping track of the students' development. Students can contact

the teacher by e-mail, text message, or messenger chat. If possible, the teacher should

visit children at home who need remediation or support. Parents meet once a week.

Teachers send printed modules to parents and guardians. By the weekend's end, Students

should have finished all work and turned in their grades. Parents are increasingly

functioning as educators alongside teachers since education is no longer restricted to the

classroom. Learner assistance enables students to achieve levels of comprehension

previously unattainable.to do without aid Learner assistance gives students greater

structure. Throughout the early phases of a new learning and progressively hand over

responsibility as they internalize and develop the abilities required to engage in more

complicated activities learning. The usage of modules in learning allows pupils to learn

completely autonomously and without supervision. reliance on others the instructions and

resources supplied are helpful, as is the communication. The language chosen is clear,

easy to understand, and straightforward. According to Prastowo (2015), formalization.

According to Bonz Magsambol, a Modular Distance Learning Approach (2020), DepEd will

create a distant learning program to ensure that learning is not impeded. Method, a style

of learning delivery in which the instructor and the students engage Students who are

geographically separated from one another during class. This means that teachings will

be given in ways other than the usual face-to-face format. As a result, according to

Manlangit, Modular learning is a sort of distant learning that uses self-learning modules

(SLM) based on DepEd's most important learning characteristics (MELCS). Similarly, the

findings complement Selga's (2013) study, which found that the modular-based worktext

was helpful in assisting students in improving their academic performance. As a result,

the module achieved the subject's primary objectives, provides for the development of

higher cognitive abilities, is well-organized and well-designed, and is appropriate for the

students' vocabulary level and performance.

Disadvantages of Modular Learning

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be inaccessible ways of learning unto

students, especially in the Philippines. Hence, DepEd decided to implement a Modular

Distance Learning (MDL). It is a way of learning in the Philippines' basic education that

allows students to access printed self-learning modules (SLM) and modules that can be

accessed digitally or via electronic devices such as laptops, computers, tablets, and

smartphones. However, in the year of 2020, DepEd conducted a survey among parents,

which revealed that 87% chose the printed modular learning modality for their children.

It reflects most Filipinos’ lack of access to other modalities, the uncertainties will be the

new environment, and the new ways of delivering education must be responsive to these

realities.

There are many cases that not all students do their modules wholeheartedly, some parents

spoil their children and do the deed instead of their children, it adds to the burden and

extra work for parents, some students tend to copy their answers from others which is

very rampant online, someone is getting paid to answer their modules, many students said

they never learn from the modules. It is just for formality cause and not internalized by

the students. COVID-19 will also impact the students’ mental health, UNICEF warns. The

15

Schools Division of DAGUPAN CITY
BONUAN BUQUIG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

negative mental health consequences of online learning among students can include

increased anxiety and absenteeism. These can stem from the increased demand for new

technological skills, productivity, and information overload (Poalses and Bezuidenhout,

2018). the DepEd organization must have a well-trained teacher who have consideration

in order for the students embrace the new normal and cope their activities day by day.

Affect Academic Performance of SHS Students

The study revealed that the 2.25% decrease in the GWA of learners after the

implementation of MDL denotes a significant difference in their academic performance.

Also, it finds that students in online courses fail to complete them and get lower grades

than peers learning in person. On the other hand, over 86% of the students polled by the

Movement for Safe Equitable, Quality, and Relevant Education said they learned less

through the education department take-home modules. Hence, it is particularly

pronounced for less-academically prepared students and for students pursuing bachelor's

degrees.

Suggested Effective Ways to Help SHS Students in Modular Learning

One of the concerns of the students is that they do not have enough time to answer

all the modules within a week. Therefore, if DepEd cannot extend the modules’ duration,

they must lessen the activities. The instructions in every exercise must be clear enough

for the learners to understand. The topics must be simplified, and teachers must give more

examples. Therefore, all the printed modules should be clear. The COVID-19 cases in the

Philippines are still insignificant, especially now that there’s the Omicron variant, so face

16

Department of Education

Schools Division of DAGUPAN CITY

to face is not yet possible. The Department of Education and the government must

collaborate towards the success of the Philippine Educational System despite the

pandemic.

From the gathered information and facts, several recommendations were created.

The methods and strategies to further improve Modular Distance Learning are reducing

activities from the modules, more examples for each subject, home visitations, blended

learning, and provision of colored printed modules. The teachers are also recommended to

be active online most of the time to address the concerns of some students, which to be

patient enough in attending to the needs and to respond to the queries immediately with

regards to learning. For parents, teachers can assist them through text and call,

consultations, meetings, posting updates on social media, and giving them words of

encouragement.

Research Literature

Advantages of Modular Learning

The utilization of modules, according to (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017), promotes self-directed

learning. Students' self-study or learning skills improve when they use modules for

learning. The topics covered in the modules captivate pupils. Students develop a sense of

responsibility as a result of the responsibilities assigned to them. They advanced on their

own. They are empowered as they learn to learn. Furthermore, the students participate in

real-life situations. They learn new things and expand their knowledge on their own.

17

Students learn to reflect on their own experiences, therefore gaining new abilities; modular

learning leads students to take responsibility of their own learning.

Disadvantages of Modular Learning

The usage of modules has several disadvantages. According to Bijeesh (2017), the

presence of teachers and classmates who remind students of their duties the possibility of

the chances of becoming sidetracked and losing track of deadlines are great. Furthermore,

in the study of Dangle, and Sumaoang (2020) outlined the major obstacles encountered

during the execution of Where the funding for the creation and delivery of modules is

insufficient; Students struggled to complete their module requirements due to a lack of

knowledge about Academic guidance for parents' child/children. With all the advantages

and disadvantages of using the modular learning as a learning modality, this paper aims

to determine the effect of printed modular learning on the academic performance of the

students. It is important to assess the program's advantages and disadvantages from the

perspectives of both teachers and students. At the same time, instructors, particularly

those of an older generation, were frequently less prepared to transition to distant learning

than pupils of the so-called "Z" generation. They improved their electronic communication

abilities. The analysis revealed that DL offers various advantages and downsides that are

nearly balanced in proportion. As a result, DL cannot be the only and final kind of training.

According to students and instructors, the most significant disadvantage of DL is the lack

of social contact among educational participants. The educational system's teaching

component must be safeguarded. As a result, remote learning is only suited for students

who are truly interested in learning. A basic disadvantage of DL is the impossibility to

conduct practical lessons under the direct supervision of an instructor. It has a negative

influence on the development of practical abilities in practice-oriented academic fields

such as medicine and physical education. he disadvantages include the increased self-

discipline and self-motivation demanded of pupils. Increased preparation time and a lack

of tangible benefits for instructors and employees, as well as increased administrative

resources are required to keep track of students and run various programs.

Affecting to Academic Performance of SHS

According to Lapada et al. (2020), instructors were acutely aware of the presence

and repercussions of the COVID-19 epidemic. Despite the concerns of the COVID-19

pandemic, teachers continue to serve by developing modules that act as students' learning

guides. As a result, the teacher becomes a facilitator in the student's growth as a member

of their community and a member of society (Martineau et al., 2020). However, Malipot

(2020) emphasized that teachers should also raise their concerns about modular remote

learning. According to Dangle and Sumaoang's (2020) research, the primary issues that

arose were a lack of school funds in the design and distribution of modules, students'

difficulties with self-studying, and parents' lack of understanding to academically advise

their child/children. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, schools, particularly in the rural areas

employed Modular Distance Learning (MDL) to ensure education continuity. This study

seeks to investigate the effects of MDL in the academic performance of learners whether

there is a significant difference in their performance before and after the implementation

of MDL. Because of the Covid-19 epidemic, schools, particularly in remote regions, used

Modular Distance Learning (MDL) to maintain educational continuity. The purpose of this

19

Department of Education
Region I
Schools Division of DAGUPAN CITY

study is to determine whether there is a substantial change in learners' academic

performance before and after the deployment of MDL. In this investigation, a mixed

technique was used. This pandemic has paved the way for the implementation of different

learning modalities like the Modular Distance Learning as an urgent response to ensure

the continuity of education. The following studies were reviewed to determine the gap in

existing related literature related to the effect of printed modular learning on students‟

academic performance. Students that used the modular learning technique dramatically

improved their academic performance. One of the major issues that surfaced in the was

the large number of activities in each module Modular Distance Learning is being

implemented. This should be considered by the Department of Education. problem,

decrease the tasks, and eliminate the unneeded subjects in order to achieve mastery to

the greatest extent feasible According to some of the parents, the less the better. One of

the issues that the students' main complaint is that they do not have enough time to

complete all of the modules in a week. As a result, if DepEd is unable to increase the time

required to complete the courses, they must reduce the number of modules. activities. We

are all aware that mistakes cannot always be avoided. The instances Because there are

still a large number of COVID-19 students in the Philippines, face-to-face instruction is

not yet available. However, the researchers believe that Blended Learning is equally

feasible in non-traditional settings. infected with the virus. According to Sahin (2009),

Suggested Effective Ways to Help SHS in Modular Learning

The usage of modules in the classroom allows students to learn completely

independently and without supervision. Depending on others the instructions and

materials are helpful, and the communication is excellent. The language employed is clear,

straightforward, and straightforward. Formalization is defined by Prastowo (2015). A

Modular Distance Learning Method According to Bonz Magsambol (2020), the Department

of Education will implement a distance learning approach, which is a learning delivery

style in which interaction occurs between the teacher and students who are physically

separated during teaching. This means that lessons will be provided in a non-traditional

manner. Modular learning, according to Manlangit, Paglumotan, and Sapera, is a sort of

distant learning that uses self-learning modules (SLM) based on DepEd's most important

standards. They were able to recall and be motivated as a result of their modular distance,

according to Mark Antony Llego (2020). Modular learning, according to Dr. Sejpal (2013),

is a set of tasks that are practically self-contained, as well as a teaching method that

focuses on the development of abilities and capabilities in individual components that

should be self-reliant, self-contained, self-instructional, and very well identified with

clearly defined goals. In today's sphere of education, he believes that the modular way of

teaching is a far more practical, contemporary, and innovative teaching method.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN

The established design used to perform the study is presented in this chapter. It is

concerned with the clear explanation of the research method used, the study's location,

respondents, instrumentation, and data collection procedure.

Research Method Used

The researchers used the descriptive method of research to determine the impact of

modular learning to academic performance among Senior High School in Bonuan Boquig

National High School during pandemic. A descriptive research plan is one that tries to

gather data in order to characterize a phenomenon, situation, or population in a

methodical manner. It mostly assists in answering the what, when, where, and how

questions about the research challenge, rather than the why.

A descriptive study's purpose is to characterize a phenomenon and its

characteristics. This study is more interested in what happened than how or why it

happened. As a result, observation and survey tools are frequently utilized to collect data

(Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2007). It is essential to note that, unlike experimental research, the

researcher does not control or influence any factors in descriptive research. The variables

are just recognized, observed, and measured in this case. Because none of the variables

in the study are altered throughout the research process, descriptive research is referred

to as an observational research method. To explore the variables in question, the

descriptive technique of research might involve the use of a variety of research methods.

It mostly uses quantitative data; however qualitative data is occasionally employed for

descriptive purposes.

Locale of the study

This study was conducted in Bonuan Buquig National high School. This public high
