Inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible
bacteria by binding to the 50S subunits
of bacterial ribosomes and preventing

bacterial cells to die.

Nursing Responsibilities
Before:
- Check the doctor’s order
- Observe 10 rights of
administration of medication
- Check if patient is allergic to
drug
During:
- Observe patients for signs and
symptoms of superinfection.
- Assess patient’s bowel pattern
daily; severe diarrhea may
indicate pseudomembranous
colitis.
- Monitor results of liven
functions tests, CBC and platelet
counts during prolonged
therapy.
After:
- Tell patient to complete the
prescribed course of therapy,
even if he/she feels better
before it’s finished.
- Advise patient to take oral drug
with food, if needed, to reduce
GI distress.
- Report any unusualities
