Webinar’s Concept Note

The Journey & Impact on the Alternative Care Discourse

September 29th, 2022- 4.30 pm- 6.00 pm IST

Background and Scope of Webinar

The global focus on children and youth in need of care and protection has

widened to incorporate several dimensions of care, including not only the

mental and physical health of care leavers but to also now examining the

dilemmas surrounding the transition of young adults into the mainstream

society and the likelihood of success in their personal journeys. There is a need

for knowledge building on how one can be prepared for transition, to the

development of specific skills that care leavers might need, to working on

increasing autonomy and community integration, to exploring mental health

needs, including trauma related issues to acknowledging that community

integration may lead to the use of drugs and marginalisation which could

impede their adjustment. Forming networks with like-minded individuals and

accessing services whenever needed in a timely manner is the current need of

the hour.
This webinar aims to provide advice on how to transition out of care and leave,

so that professionals and young people can encourage better methods for

fostering independence and preparation for adulthood.

The intrinsic need for relationships, networking, safe places, and support from

others that serves as the crucial glue for a positive outcome in the transition

process will also be demonstrated by care leavers themselves.

Additionally, the mission of this webinar is to establish a vibrant forum for the

discussion of law, practise, and evidence-based research pertaining to

alternatives to foster care for children and adolescents in South Asia who are in

out-of-home care (OHC) and at risk, to foster discussions and disagreements

between practitioners and researchers
