    Is very like a tree!"


    Read the poem written by John Godfreys Saxe’s “Six Blind Men and the Elephant”
    The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
    THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT.
    Said: "E'en the blindest man
    IT was six men of Indostan Can tell what this resembles most;
    To learning much inclined, Deny the fact who can,
    Who went to see the Elephant This marvel of an Elephant
    (Though all of them were blind), Is very like a fan!"
    That each by observation
    The Sixth no sooner had begun
    Might satisfy his mind.
    About the beast to grope,
    The First approached the Elephant, Than, seizing on the swinging tail
    And happening to fall That fell within his scope,
    Against his broad and sturdy side, "I see," quoth he, "the Elephant
    At once began to bawl: Is very like a rope!"
    "God bless me!—but the Elephant
    And so these men of Indostan
    Is very like a wall!"
    Disputed loud and long,
    The Second, feeling of the tusk, Each in his own opinion
    Cried: "Ho!—what have we here Exceeding stiff and strong,
    So very round and smooth and sharp? Though each was partly in the right,
    To me 't is mighty clear And all were in the wrong!
    This wonder of an Elephant
    MORAL.
    Is very like a spear!"
    So, oft in theologic wars
    The Third approached the animal, The disputants, I ween,
    And happening to take Rail on in utter ignorance
    The squirming trunk within his hands, Of what each other mean,
    Thus boldly up and spake: And prate about an Elephant
    "I see," quoth he, "the Elephant Not one of them has seen!
    Is very like a snake!"

    The Fourth reached out his eager hand,


    And felt about the knee.
    "What most this wondrous beast is like
    Is mighty plain," quoth he;
