The government has proposed a housing development project in your local national park which will

result in environmental damage. You strongly object to the project and wish to raise awareness among
the local community. Write a text describing the government’s project, explaining the negative impact
it will have and persuading the community to take action.

Good Morning! My name is Minahil Raza and today I’ll be discussing a major action taken by government
which I believe is wrong. The government has decided to propose a residential area in which they are
planning to build houses in Oosterschelde National Park (Netherlands). There are so many benefits of a
national park which the government is avoiding in order to encourage their project of housing
development. Oosterschelde national park contains forested areas that not only protect water sources,
but also help stabilize the surrounding land. It is also a big disadvantage to urbanization because it
clearly reflects a negative impact on the natural environment. Acres and acres of land has to be cleared
to construct new infrastructure which may lead to serious consequences. Such as, increasing the risk of
floods. We all know that Netherlands is the second country that faces flood risks. So ignoring the risk of
flood can bring a reduction to infiltration to zero. Looking at the benefit, a national park can save
multiple lives by preventing landslides and erosion. And to overcome the risk of floods, a national park
itself reduces floods by preserving wetlands.

Another huge disadvantage would be that the expansion of urban areas put pressure on the natural
habitats of certain species of plants or animals. This may lead to the extinction of an entire ecosystem.
Talking about habitat, the construction and renovation of building itself uses a precious natural resource
which is responsible for a significant proportion of all our carbon emissions. According to research, the
construction sector contributes to 23% of air pollution, 50% of the climatic change, 40% of drinking
water pollution, and 50% of landfill wastes.

Aside from construction, environmental impact of homes itself occurs while people are living in it.
Buildings or houses itself uses about 40 percent of the energy, even more than the industrial and
transportation sectors. So overall, people living in the house are responsible for releasing carbon
emissions in the atmosphere. In conclusion, we can say that not only government but the citizen are also
involved in impacting the environment.

In conclusion, citizens and the government should make environment their first priority. Government
should introduce ‘Green Buildings’ which will also provide substantial economic benefits. Green
construction eco-friend souring materials, improving energy efficiency. A green building uses about 25%
less energy and creates 34% less carbon dioxide emissions than a standard building.

Another way to prevent environmental issues during a housing development project can be through
minimizing wastes. Construction produces a large amount of waste materials. This can be prevented
through optimizing the use of supplies and materials, and choosing products and methods that will
reduce wastes for this project.
