DESIGN OF DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN BRGY.

CALAPACUAN SITIO BUKID, SUBIC,

ZAMBALES

A Thesis

ABSTRACT

Subic, being one of the coastal municipalities in Zambales often experiences varying

degrees of flooding according to the geohazard assessment conducted by Mines and Geosciences

Bureau-Region III. The area of Sitio Bukid located at Calapacuan, Subic, Zambales has a high

susceptibility in flooding. This hazard mainly occurs because of the low elevation of the area and

the absence of a drainage system for stormwater during a rainfall. According to the MDRRMO

Subic, the area of Sitio Bukid have been experiencing flood even during a low intensity rainfall.

In this research, the proponents are going to design a proper drainage system that will prevent

inundation in this flood prone area. The designing process will be carried out through gathering

relevant data such as obtaining the elevation profile of the area, the road network map, and the

historical rainfall data. After that, sub-catchment areas will be calculated as well as the stormwater

runoff to evaluate the peak discharge. Through this, the drainage sizes will be determined, and the

final design of the drainage system will be decided.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

The Philippines in general commonly suffers from different kinds of natural disasters

particularly typhoons. The occurrence of such disasters results to a lot of hazardous events

that affects both the people and the community itself. An average of 20 typhoons hit the

country every year, five of which can be destructive and very disastrous (Brown, 2013).

This year, there are already more than 7 typhoons that entered the Philippines intensifying

the southwest monsoon or “hanging habagat” that brought heavy rainfall and

thunderstorms to a lot of provinces and cities especially in Central Luzon. In Zambales,

there are 13 municipalities and most of these towns are susceptible to flooding especially

in the municipality of Subic, Zambales. The town of Subic is a coastal municipality

surrounded by rivers and beaches. It has a highly competitive status when it comes to land

development, and not far from becoming an urbanized city in the near future. Aside from

the climate change, the changes happening in the land cover of the town also contribute to

the propagation of flooding especially in the low-lying areas.

Based on the geohazard assessment conducted by Mines and Geosciences

BureauRegion III, most of the barangays in Subic experience varying degrees of flooding,

this includes Sitio Bukid of Barangay Calapacuan. Sitio Bukid have a relatively low
elevation profile and in addition to that, the area also has no present drainage system

making it highly susceptible to flooding.

Sitio Bukid have been experiencing flood for the past several years mainly because of

its topography. The figure 1-1 shows the flood hazard map produced by Mines and

Geosciences Bureau-Region III through the MGB Geohazard Assessment Team and the

National Mapping and Resource Information Authority. This shows the susceptibility of

Sitio Bukid in flood being moderate to high.

With the absence of a drainage system, the risks of flooding in Sitio Bukid becomes

higher because the stormwater has nowhere to go resulting inundation in the area. Having

said that, the proponent in this study plans to design a drainage system in Sitio

Bukid that will prevent severe floods in this low land area. This drainage system will
provide security and safety to all the residents of the barangay from the untoward and

harmful effects of flooding.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to provide a solution to the problem of flood in Barangay Calapacuan

Sitio Bukid in Subic, Zambales. The researchers plan to design an effective drainage

system that will convey the stormwater from the catchment area.

This study will specifically answer the question:

1. What design is appropriate to construct an effective drainage system in the area?

2. What proper method should be used to address the situation of low elevation of the

area?

3. What other possible recommendations can be yielded from the results of the study?

Objective of the Study

In this study, the main objective is to design a drainage system of Sitio Bukid at

Barangay Calapacuan, Subic, Zambales

Specifically, the researchers aim to:

1. Use the different engineering principles relevant to the study, as well as use

appropriate hydrological and hydraulic computations in designing the drainage

system.

2. Provide an efficient drainage plan for the residents of Sitio Bukid in Barangay

Calapacuan, Subic, Zambales.

3. Determine the right and suitable drainage sizes in each sub-catchment area.

C. Significance of the Study

In the case of Sitio Bukid where in even a low intensity rainfall causes inundation,

designing an adequate stormwater drainage system is important in mitigating the

occurrence of such event. This research will provide convenience to the residents of

Barangay Calapacuan particularly of Sitio Bukid during a rainfall as it will reduce the

possibility of flooding in the area. Also, this study will aid the Department of Public

Works and Highways as well as the Local Government Unit of Subic particularly the

Municipal Planning and Development department as it will provide possible drainage

plan suited for the area.

D. Scope and Limitations

This study will be conducted in Barangay Calapacuan Sitio Bukid at the

Municipality of Subic, province of Zambales. This study focuses on the drainage plan

of the said area. The study will assess the intensity of 50-year rainfall event.
