2 Installation
Plug one end of the supplied RS232 cable into the grey RJ plug located on the side of
the M1000C (next to the supply). The other end of the cable (with the DB9 plug)
connects to a PC COM port (COM1 is used in this manual).

Do not attach the power supply to the M1000 before the HyperTerminal application is
running. No damage will occur, but it might prevent the M1000C form initializing the
communication.

3 RS232 Configuration
There are two ways of configuring the M1000C Alarm Annunciator – by the 16 dip
switches located on the rear of the unit, or through the build-in RS232 interface (RJ-
plug). The 16 dip switches have a limited number of combinations and provide only
restricted combinations for e.g. channels and delays. The RS232 based configuration
is unrestricted.

RS232 based configuration is easily done using a standard ANSI compatible terminal
application (e.g. HyperTerminal, which is supplied with the Windows operating
system). The configuration is done through the special RS232 cable, which is
delivered with the M1000 units.

3.1 Installing HyperTerminal

It’s important to make sure that there is an ANSI terminal application is installed on
the PC that is to be used for programming. Any ANSI terminal application can be
used, however this section describes the procedure for installing HyperTerminal,
which is supplied on the Windows 9x CD-ROM.

Please note that the setup procedure for HyperTerminal might be a little different for
Windows Me, NT or 2000. It should however be possible to configure the system
using this manual.

Windows will normally not install HyperTerminal by default, so it’s necessary to

install the application through the Add/Remove Programs function located in the
Windows Control Panel.

Press the Start button in the lower left corner of the Windows screen. Then select
Control Panel from the Settings menu.

The Control Panel windows will emerge on the screen. Now double-click on the
Add/Remove Programs icon.

Double clicking on the Add/Remove Programs icon will bring up the Add/Remove
Programs Properties dialogue.

The HyperTerminal application is part of Windows setup (its on the Windows CD-
ROM), thus its necessary to select the Windows Setup tab.

Before showing the installed components, Windows needs a couple of seconds to scan
the PC. This is done while showing the above message.

HyperTerminal will the prompt the user to install a modem (which is not necessary).
Click on the No button to decline the modem installation.

HyperTerminal will now prompt to create a new connection. Type “Direct COM1”
(assuming that COM1 is used for the connection) in the Name field and click on the
OK button.

Now confirm the setting clicking on the OK button.

Now set the communication parameters to match those of the M1000C. Bits per
second (Baud rate) must be 9600, Data Bits must be 8, Parity must be None, Stop Bits
must be 1 and Flow Control must be set to None. Click OK to accept these setting.

SELCO M1000C RS232 Configuration

The M1000C is now connected to the PC through RS232. The screen dump below
shows that welcome message transmitted by the M1000C, which indicates that it is
ready for configuration.

In order to avoid the above configuration procedure in the future, its practical to save
the setup. This is done with the Save function located in the File menu.

The communication of the M1000C can be reinitialised by enabeling and disabeling

the RS232 configuration. Clicking on the Call and Disconnect icons in the
HyperTerminal tool bar does this. Communication problems might also be solved by

briefly removing the power supply to the M1000C after HyperTerminal has been
started.

The configuration has been saved as a HyperTerminal shortcut icon. This icon (named
“Direct COM1”) can be accessed directly through the start menu (same location as
HyperTerminal).

3.3 Changing the Configuration

It now time to configure the M1000C using the preconfigured settings for
HyperTerminal.

Make sure that the M1000C RS232 port is connected to the PC COM1 serial port.
Remove the power supply to the M1000C.

Click on the HyperTerminal program folder in the Windows start menu.

Start HyperTerminal by double clicking on the Direct COM1 icon. The icon is
accessible through the Windows start menu.

Communication parameters
Reconnect the power supply to the M1000C unit. This should make the configuration
text appear in the terminal window.

The HyperTerminal window will show the initial configuration screen of the
M1000C. The initial screen shows the communication parameters.

Parameters are selected with the cursor up/down keys and altered (toggled) using the
space bar.

Parameters Toggle to change parameter screen

Source Source of configuration (dip switches or E2PROM)
RS485 baud rate Baud rate for the RS485 port
Protocol MODBUS or SELCOBUS
Address Slave address on the MODBUS/SELCOBUS
Special program Used for special customized configurations (do not change)
Reset PROM Toggle to restore the default configuration

Please note that Protocol must be set to SelB (SELCO BUS) in order to use the
M1000C with the SELCO N0500 or N0300 software. The software must also be
configured to run with 9.600 baud (opposed to the default 1.200 baud).

Parameters are selected with the cursor up/down keys and altered (toggled) using the
space bar.

Toggle the Parameters field to move to the next configuration screen. This will be the
configuration of the input channels.

Channel configuration

In this window the input channels can be set up for delay times, switching logic, cable
monitoring and reset options:

Parameters Toggle to change parameter screen

Source Source of configuration (dip switches or E2PROM)
Channel The channel (1-10) that is being configured
Delay value Delay value for the selected channel
Delay factor Delay factor for the selected channel
Contact + Cable Contact function (NO/NC) and cable monitoring for the selected
channel
Reset Reset function for the selected channel
Norm: This is the Default reset function. It requires that the reset push
button (or external input) is activated before the faults are
cleared (providing that the input signals are gone), this reset
function is similar to the default function (programming switch
S12 on)
Auto Auto reset will automatically reset the channel once the input
signal is deactivated. This means that the indication on the
channel can switch directly from flashing light to no light.
E.SW means Local reset and works together with a 39 kohm resistor
connected in series with the external reset signal connected to
terminal 12 (RESET). Channels working with Local reset
cannot be reset with the external reset signal connected
through the 39 kohm resistor however it is still possible to
perform reset on RESET pushbutton and the directly connected
reset signal.
Indi Indicator means LED and output follow the input signal. If an
input signal appears, the LED will change to steady light and
the output will be activated. As soon as the input signal
disappears, LED and output will be switched off.

SELCO M1000C RS232 Configuration

Channel delay is defined as Delay value x Delay factor.

Toggle the Parameters field to move to the next configuration screen. This will be
general parameters.

General parameters

Please note that parameters under Extension 1 and Extension 2 can be used while the
unit is configured for dip switch based configuration.

Parameters Toggle to change parameter screen

Source Source of configuration (dip switches or E2PROM)
Reset act. twice After reset the steady light is maintained until reset is again
activated, provided the that the fault has been cleared.
Sync-out on out10 The sync-out function provides the possibility of synchronised
LED flashing between units in a multiunit installation. The
selection of this function disables the default output function of
terminal 26. Sync-out has no functional importance other than
providing visual continuity.
Norm. deact. siren The default operation of the siren is normally energised.
Selecting normally deactivated function will cause the siren
relay to operate normally deenergised.
Insumon. On ch 7/8 If insulation resistance between ground (terminal 16 and power
+ (terminal 28) becomes lower than 25kohm ± 8kohm (12V-
24V version), channel 8 will indicate alarm. If insulation
resistance between ground and power – ( terminal 29) becomes
lower than 25kohm , channel 7 will indicate alarm.
The resistance values are 50kohm ± 10kohm for the 48/110V
DC version.
Voltmon on ch. 2/3 Here the voltage monitoring can be activated. Over voltage
alarm is indicated on channel 2, under voltage on channel 3.
A resistor must be connected to the unit for this function.
For wiring of this resistor please see datasheet.

Revision 010627 Page 14 of 16

SELCO M1000C RS232 Configuration

The calculation of the resistor sizes is slightly different for the

c-version than for the b-version:

B Version C Version
12V to 48V versions: 12V to 24V versions:

16 × (U U − U L ) 16 × (U U − U L )
R= R=
UL UL

110V versions: 48V to 110V versions:

84,2 × (U U − U L ) 84,2 × (U U − U L )
R= R=
UL UL

U U = Upper voltage limit

U L = Lower voltage limit

2 sec siren pulse The siren relay will only stay active for two seconds. Normally
the relay stays active until the first reset.
Flashing outputs The open collector outputs will “flash” in accordance with the
unit LEDs. This function is practical when remote indication is
conducted using the open collector outputs.
Siren on ack. Alarm The siren relay will stay active until no light, flashing or steady,
is indicated on the unit. The siren is normally deactivated with
the first reset.
Inverted outputs The open collector outputs will work opposite the unit LEDs.
Repeat siren 3 min Acknowledged alarms are repeated as new alarms after three
minutes, providing that the fault(s) is/are still present. This
security function prevents the operator from forgetting an
important alarm condition after having acknowledged the
alarm(s).

Toggle the Parameters field to move to the next configuration screen. On this screen
the configuration can be send to the unit.
