INTRODUCTION TO TEA
Tea is an aromatic stimulant
coming from the tropical
bush Camellia Sinensis
which contains various
polyphenols, essential oils,
and caffeine.
TEA CLIMATE
The tea plant grows best in a
warm climate with long sunlit
days, cool nights, musty weather
and an abundance of rainfall.
Tea plants grow at altitudes
ranging from sea level to 7,000
feet
HISTORY OF TEA
According to Chinese mythology, tea was discovered in 2737
BC by Shen Nung, the 2nd Emperor of China. He was
considered the founder of ancient Chinese agriculture and
ancient Chinese medicine and a combination of both led to
the discovery of Tea.
China, Tibet, and northern India are the origins of tea,
though it is cultivated in many other countries across the
globe, including Sri Lanka, Japan, Kenya, Turkey, Indonesia,
Vietnam, Argentina, Tanzania, Taiwan and Zimbabwe.
IMPORTANT YEARS
1610 - Dutch introduce Tea into Europe
1639 – Earliest reference of tea drinking in France
1657 - Green Tea from China introduced to London’s Coffee House
1658 – First Tea advertisement in London Newspaper as ‘China drink’
1667 – The British East India Company places first order for tea import
1706 – First Tea Room opens in London by Thomas Twining
1773 – Phenomenal Boston Tea Party due to high taxes imposed by British
1787 – Establishment of Calcutta Botanical gardens for tea cultivation
1799 – French Revolution ends, people move to coffee
1826 – Dutch bought seeds from Japan and started culivating in China
1836 - British introduced Tea Culture into India
1853 - Fraser’s Magazine suggested that India and not China was the “natural
home of the tea plant
1954 - Tea board in India was formed
