“Commit a crime and the world is made of glass. Commit a crime, and it seems as if a
coat of snow fell on the ground, such as reveals in the woods the track of every partridge
and fox and squirrel and mole.” - RALPH WALDO EMERSON.

A bloody murderous and crime riddle book and contains about triangular love
and lust that leads to crime in the family of Karamazov and it involves the tactical test of
faith in God that will align in the moral philosophy in our life.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born (November 11, 1821, Moscow, Russia) died (February 9,
1881, St. Petersburg). He is a Russian novelist and short-story writer whose psychological
penetration into the darkest recesses of the human heart, together with his unsurpassed
moments of illumination, had an immense influence on 20th-century fiction. Dostoyevsky
is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism,
existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have
been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so
accurately predicted how Russia’s revolutionaries would behave if they came to power.
In his time, he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist. Dostoyevsky’s name has
become synonymous with psychological profundity. For generations, the depth and
contradictoriness of his heroes have made systematic psychological theories look shallow
by comparison. Many theorists (most notably Freud) have tried to claim Dostoyevsky as
a predecessor. His sense of evil and his love of freedom have made Dostoyevsky
especially relevant to a century of world war, mass murder, and totalitarianism. At least
two modern literary genres, the prison camp novel, and the dystopian novel (works
such as Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, and George
Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four), derive from his writings. His ideas and formal
innovations exercised a profound influence on Friedrich Nietzsche, André Gide,
Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, André Malraux, and Mikhail Bulgakov, to name only a
few. Above all, his works continue to enthrall readers by combining suspenseful plots with
ultimate questions about faith, suffering, and the meaning of life. Lastly, Dostoyevsky’s
POV of their books and novel are totally exist or happen in our life about the meaning of
life and survival and the testimony of faith in our God, which is all he applied it also on
himself, he used it to enlightened the mind of the people about how our life has a purpose
on this world or how we can survive and also it can help the people to know what is the
good or bad action that can help the people to think outside the box before they decide
on their decision and think about what is the possible outcomes or consequences if we
choose the kind of action, on the other hand Dostoyevsky’s is a social thinker in this
world, he used the work of literature to write a book so that he can help the people to
know the essence of life and the fight of our God as well as the evil side of the people,
he used the book to change the path of the people that leads to a faith and cherished life
and help the people to be more knowledgeable about different type of evil side of man.
Going back in the story of The Brothers Karamazov, let’s start to "Dmitri Fyodorovitch
Karamazov". Dmitri is the eldest son of karamazov family and the son who grown up
with so many expectation in his life, he is also The hedonistic eldest son of Fyodor who
accused of murdering his father over Grushenka. Why Dmitri considered as a hedonist
character type on this book? Dmitri is a person who focuses or believes in the pursuit of
pleasures or a pleasure seeker, just like on the book stated that Dmitri stole 3,000 rubles
from Katerina to finance a lavish trip with Grushenka. On this part of this story Dmitri
considered as a pleasure seeker, he didn’t know the worth of perseverance or hard works
to get the amount of reward that they want to finance Grushenka in his own hard works.
Also, there has a part of the book that shows Dmitri's contradictory personality, is his
manipulation of events in order to force Katerina to come to his room so that he can
seduce her. When she arrives, Dmitri cannot carry out his scheme. The better part of his
nature has gained control of him. Next one, Ivan Fyodorovitch Karamazov. Ivan is
the middle son of Karamazov family and the son who grown as a independent child, he
is in contrast to his brother Alyosha (who freely accepts help and aid from other people),
unable to receive freely any act of generosity. He is an atheist, yet concerned with the
fate of mankind on this earth; all of his studies have led him to a deep compassion for
the sufferings and tribulations of earthly man. But he cannot honestly accept religious
matters on faith alone. That which does not conform to human logic is unacceptable to
him. Unlike Alyosha, he cannot accept the abstract theory of God's mercy and goodness
because he has seen too many examples of injustice and suffering in the world. He
refrains from questioning the existence of God but refuses to accept this world as being
God's world. Ivan feels that a God who is infinitely good and just should have created a
world where there is no innocent suffering, that’s why Ivan considered as a nihilism type
of character on this book. Next one, Alexei Fyodorovitch Karamazov or well known
as Alyosha in the book. He is the youngest son of Karamazov, Alyosha studied also to
become a monk on this book. He is also the positive character among brothers on this
book and he believes about the meaning of existence of life by our God. Alyosha is a
member of the monastery and a special disciple of the religious elder, Father Zossima.
As the story progresses, he becomes the living embodiment of all of Zossima's teachings.
His every action reflects the qualities that he learned from his elder. Why alyosha
considered as a Christian existentialism on this book? Alyosha is a man who have a deep
faith in God and having the essence of abnegation or kindness and good in action in front
of the people especially to his brother, however Alyosha having a hard time to give is life
to God due to the different challenges and test they faced in life, therefore Alyosha have
a great strength of belief in God and at the end he take a leap of faith in God in his whole
life. Next one, Pavel Fyodorovitch Smerdyakov or well known as Smerdyakov. He
is a servant in the house of Fyodor Karamazov and son of Fyodor Karamazov. He is the
instrument of evil acts of Ivan by killing Fyodor Karamazov on this book and he commits
suicide at the end of the story in order not to blame anybody of murderous crime of killing
Fyodor Karamazov. Next one, Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov. He is the father of
Karamazov brothers, he is cruel, lustful man he is a self-centered man or full of immoral
action on his life. He has married twice for selfish reasons and has treated each wife with
total disrespect. Little wonder, for a man who has no respect for himself can respect no
one else. Fyodor's vulgarity is part and parcel of his every action; he lives the part of the
vulgar buffoon, delighting in embarrassing anyone in his presence. Not surprisingly, his
degeneration leads indirectly to his death; it was his seduction of the village idiot, which
is Lizaveta who has a mother of Smerdyakov a son strange epileptic who grew up as his
father's servant and then dispassionately slaughtered him. Lastly, Fyodor is a man who
considered on this book as a type of man who has no respect on himself just by doing
nothing immoral acts in order to attain his pleasure and selfishness on his life. Next one,
Katerina Ivanonva Verkhovtseva or well known as Katya name on this book. She is
Dmitri's beautiful fiancée however she fell in love in Ivan which brother of Dmitri. She
became engaged to Dmitri after he bailed her father out of a debt. Katerina produces a
further love triangle among the Karamazov brothers as Ivan falls in love with her. Katerina
is extremely proud, and attempts to put herself into the position of a noble martyr
suffering as a stark reminder of everyone's guilt. Agrafena Alexandrovna Svetlova or
well known as Grushenka on this book. Grushenka is a woman that leads to conflict of
son and father of Karamazov Family which is Fyodor and Dmitri, However, after an
encounter with Alyosha, she redeems herself and stands by Dmitri. Perhaps one of her
greatest values lies in her faithfulness. As she had previously been true to her first lover,
she vows to remain forever constant and faithful to Dmitri when she finally realizes her
love for him. Furthermore, she accepts her involvement with the murder and willingly
seeks to share the guilt with Dmitri. All these factors help redeem her despite her painful
past. Next one, Liza Khokhlakova or well known as Lise on this book. One of the
supportive characters on this book, she is a woman healed in paralysis of her legs for
almost 6 months and a daughter of Madame Khokhlakov, she fell in love in one of the
sons of Fyodor Karamazov, which is Alyosha and become engage. Next one, Father
Zosima is the Alyosha's teacher in the town monastery and has the essence of spiritual
of the book. His spiritual status inspires both admiration and jealousy among his fellow
monks. Zosima provides a refutation to Ivan's atheistic arguments and helps to explain
Alyosha's character. Zosima's teachings shape the way Alyosha deals with the young boys
he meets in the Ilyusha storyline. He is also the character who focus to guide Alyosha to
become a fine man on his life and also, he guides Alyosha to take a leap of faith on God
to attain the peaceful and cherished life of Alyosha. Ilych Nikolayevitch Snergiryov
or well known as Ilyusha on this book. One of the supported characters on this book he
is a cruel to those around him and is subsequently ostracized. Ilyusha contracts
tuberculosis and dies towards the novel's end, but not before Alyosha and the local
children befriend him.
What are the things that I particularly liked about this book?
"Death is for many of us the gate of hell; but we are inside on the way out, not outside
on the way in" -George Bernard Shaw

On this book I’ve seen a lot of sins that was taken over by each character on this
book, which is relate much in the real-life situation in our life or it happen/exist in this
world. This part of this book review I will list the things that I liked on this book which is
associated in human action and moral philosophy on this book. First one is committed
crime of Dmitri, Dmitri stole the 3,000 rubles to Katerina in order to finance the lavish
trip of Grushenka. This kind of sin is one of the major sins based on the bible, which is
based on the 10 Commandments as well, it is unethical acts of behavior of a person which
highly correlated in crime in order to sustain the needs or pleasure in just easy way
without doing a hard works and perseverance to attain the needs or pleasure. It is very
evident that this kind of action is totally exist on this world, especially on these present
times, because some of our countries on this world faces crisis just like war, population
increase, shortage of personal needs etc… Besides of doing theft in order to sustain our
pleasure or needs, there are some good ways to get an income in order to solve our
pleasure or needs, just like having a proper education, permanent work, or business. All
we must do is we need to exert an effort so that we can get a reward or possible outcomes
in our life, because if we didn’t follow the good moral acts, we are possible to be closer
in the gate of death of burning fire and sulfur.
Another thing is about the lust that leads to rape of the innocent young woman,
when Fyodor raped the mother of Alyosha and a woman who has a mentally illness in
the book, she is an innocent woman who has a victim of lust and pleasure acts of Fyodor
that results of born of a child by the innocent woman which is the child’s name Alyosha.
This kind of sin and crime are totally existed on this world, especially on this real time
situation and raped are also commonly find inside our places as well on the social media,
there are more sexual predator inside the internet space. Nowadays, both women and
men are possibly prone in rape cased in this word, but women are more likely prone in
raped. Doing this kind of act is unethical and it is against in the divine law, which is if you
do this kind of thing you are considered as demon or a pure evil who are predator and
hunger of sex pleasure and you are finding a prey to victim an innocent people. Moreover,
of that is your soul became on the dark path of the death and you are step by step closer
in the gate of hell if you keep doing this kind of acts for pleasure to victims someone’s
innocent.
Third thing is about the Murderous Death of Fyodor, Smerdyakov killed Fyodor because
of anger and became an instrument or a follower of Ivan. On the Chapter 6-8 of the book
which is the death of Fyodor:
“Smerdyakov has been sick and is now near death. Ivan has visited him twice, and now
goes to see him again. During their first visit, Smerdyakov asserts that Ivan left his father
on the day of the murder because he suspected his brother Dmitri would kill their father,
and Ivan secretly wanted their father to die”.

For this chapter, Smyerdakov has been controlled by Ivan by planning to kill
Fyodor so that he can get an inheritance large of portion of his wealth in their family.
Let’s say Fyodor is a sinful man and full of selfishness surrounded by the people, even
though that he is a sinful man he is not worthy to kill by someone else because he is an
evil man, we are deserve to change ourselves to become a fine man again; like taken
away the bad things and give life to our God again, we are all deserve a second chance
but it still depends on the people who understand it especially me, I still depends to give
a second depends on the sin that you’ve done to me but still our God is kind and we have
a will to choose the right path again and forget the painful past that we have. Going back
on Smyerdakov crime, he killed Fyodor not just he is anger but he is dazzle about the
money and wealth that they have on Ivan, this kind of crime and actions are totally exist
in this world especially on this present times now, that all people has been dazzle in the
money and wealth they are do a lot of things to kill someone, and to victim someone in
order to get that money that they want, what ever it take they will do it for the sake of
money and wealth and it is painful to see and to think that this kind of action and crimes
are not eliminate on this world so that we can attained peace, mutual trust and faith on
this world.
On this last part that I like on this book is about Ivan confess himself about the murderous
crime that he is the one who planned to assassinate his father which is Fyodoro, and will
be found in Chapter 9-10

"Ivan returns home, thinking that he will now be able to prove Dmitri’s innocence at the
trial tomorrow. But in his room, he has a nightmarish hallucination or vision: a luridly
dressed middle-aged man who claims to be a devil. The devil taunts Ivan about his doubt
and insecurity, and though Ivan is harshly critical of the devil, the apparition eventually
drives him mad. The apparition vanishes when Alyosha arrives with the news that
Smyerdakov has hung himself. At the trial, Dmitri’s case seems to be going well until Ivan
is called upon to testify. Ivan madly asserts that he himself is guilty of the murder,
throwing the courtroom into confusion. To clear Ivan’s name, Katerina leaps up and
shows a letter she received from Dmitri in which he wrote that he was afraid he might
one day murder his father. Even after the letter is read, most of the people in the
courtroom are convinced of Dmitri’s innocence. But the peasants on the jury find him
guilty, and he is taken back to prison to await his exile in Siberia."
For this part of the scenario, Ivan realized all the thing that he is control by the
demon apparition or he is having a mental breakdown that leads to planned for
assassination of his own father, but when Alyosha came into the room of Ivan the devil
apparition was gone and Ivan have a conscious of mind that all the thing that was
happened on his father are all his fault and Smyerdakov is an instrument only to kill their
own father for the sake of freed and wealth on his life and the life of their brother’s.
However, the Dmitri was still on the jail and condemned for the sins of their brothers,
even though that Dmitri has no knowledge about the murderous crime that happened on
their own father. Dmitri claiming himself inside the court that it is not his fault, and he
cannot be able to do that kind of crime on his own father, even though that Dmitri is a
selfish person and more on sense of pleasure on his life, and he has an anger of his own
father due to the miserable life that they have in their family, he love his father at the
end and he cannot able to kill his own father.
Going back to Ivan, while court is ongoing for condemning Dmitri about the crime of his
father, Ivan came through and he stated all the things inside the court that all the
mastermind happened on their father was all his fault and it was all his plan. But the
peasant still finds Dmitri as guilty even though that there has proof evidence in the letter
regarding about the plan of assassination on his own father. Ivan stated all the things
that he wants to say, because of consciousness or superego in his mind and soul and due
to suicidal incident of Smyerdakov. Also, before Smyerdakov died he left a message
beside him about the truth of assassination on their own father and that letter is handled
by Ivan to present on the court and Ivan realized this letter also as an eye opener of his
conscious about the murderous crime on their own father.
I realized on the character of Ivan presented as a round character because, as
you can observe in the story of his book, he is an atheist person not believing in God
creatin and the meaning of life and without belief of God you are prone in the evil acts
or you are controlling by the demon’s to do unethical acts for the sake of pleasure and
own self, like killing like there’s no tomorrow inside on his mind and soul, however,
Alyosha serve as an supporting role or a character to further change or help Ivan on his
dark path and he is like an angel of light who shines on Ivan paths to escape on the dark
path immediately because if Ivan keep going on the dark path is more likely to be close
in the Lake of fire and sulfur or Gate of hell, but when Alyosha came in the Dark apparition
was eliminate on the room of Ivan and I realized that the reason on why the devil was
gone on the room because of the strong faith of Alyosha and clear mind with positivity
on his own self that can able to perished the demon inside of the soul of Ivan. Finally,
Ivan has been saved at the darkness path that full of negative, anger, insecurities and
faithless in his life, but still Ivan served as a round character on this story that leads to
freed of crime on his brother and the freed of demon sins on his family and their love
ones, but still Ivan is still an Atheist person, but he understand the of having a
consciousness of happened in his own father.
What are the things that you’ve particularly dislike about the book?
On this part of the book review, I will list the thing that I dislike on the book.
First one is about the Suicidal scene of Smyerdakov. Smyerdakov kill himself and he
leaves a letter stated about the truth of killing their own father, this kind of scenes are
totally trigger for those people who having a full of negative problems in their mind and
soul or same of the Smyerdakov case by the person who suffered this kind of problem,
moreover, the person who reads this scene of Smyerdakov will be have possible effects
in their mental stress or stressor and he/she cannot be able to cope it easily because they
think that If I do this kind of thing I will be freed on my darkness? On that scenario the
person will be possible to suicide also because they felt the same energy of Smyerdakov
and remember based on the bible suicide is a mortal sin and it is unacceptable acts by
our God, because God provide the gift of live to do our mission inside this world that we
loved and to learn a lot of things that we need to know and help the people as well to be
grown as fine man or a woman on this world. After that process of living that kind of
man, our God was only the one who can be able to stop our time or life but killing
ourselves is unacceptable by our God because it is not a time of our life. Avoiding suicide
can help us also to live our soul in an eternity life in heaven beside with our God and
loved one’s so that we can guide other people.
Going back to the death of Smyerdakov, the author doesn’t want or introduces
a change’s of Smyerdakov or giving have a second chance to change himself about his
murderous crime that he do on his own father, it is looks like on the bible of Judas that
Judas has been dazzled of wealth to kill Jesus so that he can get that he wants and attain
his pleasure of wealth by doing a bad acts or a crime, that kind of example is more likely
from Smyerdakov that who dazzled on money or wealth and he must continue to take
his anger on his own father that leads to murderous crime on their family.
Second is about the mind of Ivan of being an Atheist, although some of the
atheist people are good but they are not belief in God’s will, but still, they are doing a
right action to help the people and willing to help and listen to the people who need help.
But for this character of Ivan, he is an atheist person who doesn’t have belief in God and
he is having a fixed mindset in his mind and having a selfishness or doesn’t have the
essence of abnegation on his life or in short he is focusing on his own pursue and goal
without helping people surrounds them.
Having a fixed mindset is the character that I identified on Ivan except for
the last part of the chapter of the books, because having a fixed mindset in our life, we
cannot able to create a good mutual trust on the other people and we cannot be able to
seek some help on the other people as well and moreover, having a fixed mindset is not
good because we can possible to use it to curse someone or we cannot able to understand
other insight of the people that can cause chaos in our life.
Third is about the personality that we have on the character of Fyodor, well
Fyodor has virtually no redeeming qualities. He is a self-centered man corrupt and
immoral and is cynically dedicated only to the fulfillment of his bestial appetites. He has
married twice for selfish reasons and has treated each wife with total disrespect. Little
wonder, for a man who has no respect for himself can respect no one else. Moreover, of
Fyodor, He has no affection for his children, and even forgets which of them belongs to
which mother. His only goal in life is to have money and seduce young women such as
Grushenka, whom he lusts after for much of the novel. Fyodor Pavlovich is eventually
murdered by Smerdyakov.
On this kind of personality, it is very evident that it is exist in this world that we
have especially on the politician or the person who lived in our society, some of them
using his/her power to abused someone, which is can triggered an anger by the people
or viewers in this kind of personality, also this kind of personality is very dangerous for
those innocent people because they can able to abused them using his/her own power
for the sake of pleasure and goals in this life. However, using this kind of action or
personality can cause a big karma in your whole life, because you’re using a wealth or
power in order to accused or to victim someone for your own sake and it is unethical in
the eyes of our God.
Living in this kind of personality can cause a big impact in our mental and faith in
our God, because you will feel that you have the power of authority to took someone
dignity for the sake of your pleasure or whatsoever, also as I stated before, like some of
the politician who used to have this kind of personality, will have a possible to lose our
economic status in our society, also it can cause scarcity and war in our life that leads to
extinction survival in our home due to having selfishness or abandoning the life of the
other and abusing own power of money and wealth.
The Karamazov brothers are often considered one of the most complex novels
in the world. Dostoevsky explored various aspects of life, explored many issues of lasting
importance, and in this novel, the size and size of the book was so large that it could
deliberately delay the introduction and development of ideas. You can do it, so you can
do it well. However, trying to separate and analyze some of the main ideas in these
commentaries destroys the essential unity of the novel. Part of his splendor is how
Dostoevsky can integrate all the divergent elements into a unified whole. Each idea
borders another idea, and when separated from the rest of the novel, it's somewhat
ruined. With the intricate spirit of the novel and the laid-back fashion of the 19th century,
which depicts the intricate background of the protagonist, Dostoevsky begins writing
books and quickly gets into shape. He first publishes the mysterious element of the novel-
Karamasov's "disastrous and tragic death" and then begins to define the tragic element-
especially Karamazov's tragedy.

Elder Karamazov is described as vulgar, vulgar, vicious, and completely corrupt, and his
"tragic" death is tragic just because his son is involved in the death. It is published as a
typical one. In fact, later trial scenes in the book point out that murder is not a true
parricide, as Fyodor Karamazov has never acted as a true father. To support this idea,
Dostoevsky begins by showing the blackness and vulgarity of the man being killed at the
beginning of the novel. To emphasize the Karamazov monster, Dostoevsky explains the
lack of paternal instinct. Karamazov did not reject the children from hatred or malice. He
simply forgot about their existence. Moreover, he was always happy when a stranger
came and took the children away. So, he was released from responsibility. This allowed
him to devote all his energy to his various orgies. Therefore, one of Dostoevsky's ideas
throughout the novel is about the position of children in society. This theme finds the first
expression in the chapter dealing with the treatment of children in Fyodor Karamazov.

In the process of the novel, Dmitri grows into an extreme sensualist, an emotional son.
He did not complete his education. Instead, he went up the ranks of the army to become
an officer. However, he realized that he was lacking in discipline and soon participated in
the duel and was demoted. He was later promoted again. But his actions and emotions
are fluid and swaying. For example, he has an instinctive dislike of his father, but soon
becomes friends with his brother Alyosha. He is a fiery, wild, and emotional person, easily
influenced by his emotions. Ivan is a cool intellectual. He developed his willingness to
learn and his extraordinary talent for learning early on. He is a very proud son and is
always aware that his early education was at the expense of others. Therefore, he began
writing reviews as soon as possible to earn a living, and before arriving in his hometown,
he published a widely read and highly discussed article in the ecclesiastical court.
Unlike his two brothers, Alyosha has no pride in Ivan and is not as enthusiastic
as Dmitri. He is an "early philanthropist" and always strives to see the best of all. He has
implicit trust in all, and in all his relationships he never judges others. But under his
humble appearance is a spirit of permeation and understanding that identifies many
subtle differences and differences. Of course, Alyosha is very religious, but he is not the
fanatic type of miraculously building faith. He is an absolute realist who has reached
immortality and his belief in God through reasoning. While explaining the characteristics
of Karamazov's three sons, Dostoevsky introduces another major theme: the conflict
between belief and disbelief. Alyosha and Ivan represent the two opposite poles of
acceptance, and it's not surprising that they don't become close friends at first. However,
Alyosha has enough perceptual power to understand Ivan's problem. He said, "Ivan was
obsessed with something. Something internal and important he was aiming for, perhaps
a very difficult goal to achieve, so he didn't think of him. I know that. In the future, Ivan
will forever fight the idea of faith and immortality, and that struggle will form one of the
most dramatic sections of the novel. In contrast, Dmitri is slowly becoming a believer. As
a result, he and Alyosha became close friends from the beginning.

On the other hand, Dostoevsky was interested in the psychology of behavior. He

was particularly interested in the contradictory nature of behavior. As a result, many of
his characters perform actions that appear to be incompatible with their personality.
Dostoevsky explores this idea to understand why people who act in a particular way often
behave in ways that appear to be contrary to their nature. For example, in the character
of his father, he shows that Fyodor visits the tomb of his first wife and is so impressed
with her memory that he gives the monastery a thousand rubles for Requiem. This
behavior is strange and contradictory for men who are usually very stingy for money and
do not profess their faith in God. "Sudden emotions and strange impulses of sudden
thoughts are common in such types," Dostoevsky commented. He also later wrote that
Fyodor was "malicious and sentimental," and Dostoevsky's contradictory behavioral
problems are never resolved, but they are part of the novel, and readers should pay
attention to the investigation and need to do it.
