About This Documentation

The present documentation describes the new features of the software Prinect PDF Toolbox 2020 as
compared to Prinect PDF Toolbox 2019. We will show you the advantages of the new features in prac-
tical examples or error descriptions.

What you should already know

We assume that you are familiar with the Windows® and Mac OS X® operating systems that are sup-
ported by this application.
We also assume that you have a basic knowledge of how to operate Acrobat and Prinect PDF Toolbox.

Typographical conventions
The following typographical conventions are used in this documentation:
• References to sections are blue (on the screen) and underlined.
Example: See section "Important Information", page 6.
• Quotes are used to indicate menus, folders, names of functions, hardware conditions, switch
settings, system messages, etc.
Example: Set the switch to "off".
• Menus, functions and sub-functions are separated by ">".
Example: Select "File > Open...".
• A plus sign is used to indicate that several keys have to be pressed at the same time.
Example: Press Alt+A.
Important Information
Important information in the text is marked by symbols that are used as follows:

System Requirements
Like PDF Toolbox 2019, Prinect PDF Toolbox 2020 supports Acrobat Version 10, 11 and Acrobat DC
2015 and 2017 on Macintosh and Window´s PCs.
General Information

New: Ease of use for Online help
From the open program you can automatically reach the right place in the Onlinehelp. It is context
sensitive respecting active tool when pressing "?" or hitting the "F1" key (windows).

PDF Assistant: Preflight

New: selectable language of report
Motivation: Independant from the system settings for the language you can choose a language for
the report:
Hint: This is also possible in other Report creating tools like PDF Compare or
Versioning Assistant.

New: Enhanced check for colored text
a) supporting area coverage and
b) enhanced black detection
Motivation: Wish was to preflight more precisely for colored text. With this change you can now
check colored text based on area coverage and you have the option to detect black text. Black text
might be built in other amounts of color than black. It looks black on screen but may leadcolor flashes
when printed due to misregister.
For example:
This is should be black that was falsely built in colored separation:
In 2019 you were able to preflight for a colored font (1) less than a certain size (2).
In addition to that you can choose now "area coverage is above" (3) and "is black" (4):
1. "Font uses more separations than": means action when the font has at least more separations than
the value set
2. AND "Black font is knockout and below (pt): dependancy to 1) means action when the font is
smaller than the PT size set
3. AND "are coverage is above": dependancy to 1): action when the font has more area coverage tha
set
4. AND "is black": dependancy to 1): action when a font is detected as black

What does "area coverage is above" mean?

The area coverage is the total value of coverage of each separation.
Example:
Setting:
Result:
Text (C100/M100/Y10/K0) is warned as it has more than 1 separation AND area coverage is 300%
(100+100+100+0= 300%):
C90+M90+Y+90+K20=290 has less than 300% and is not warned:
What does "and is black" mean?

Colored text that supposed to be black should be detected.
Example:
When you preflight without "and is black":...
both fonts are listed as they both use more than 1 Separation:

When you preflight with "and is black":...only 50/40/0/75 is marked as it uses more than 1 Separa-
tion AND it is considered to be black:
When is black considerd as black?:

There is a internal algorithm for the decision when a font is dark enough to be black.
1. Must be DeviceN CMYK or CMYK AND
2. common density of the separations is at least 70% of the ND of K (1.67) AND
3. common value of the separation added to black must be at least 75%
30/40/50/60
30% in common + 60% black =90% > 75% is considered to be black

New: Enhanced check for trimbox size.
Motivation: For digital printers or Primefire customers it is essiantial to know if the page sizes are
matching the loaded paper size. Therefor you can check more precisely if a Trimbox is equal, greater
or less than a certain size:

New: PDF 2.0 ready
Motivation: Even though there are no "real" PDF 2.0 files yet there are some PDF claiming to be
PDF 2.0 as it is marked internally in PDF header. Those files can be checked now:
Hint: Print relevant specification of PDF 2.0 amongst others (at state of this Documentation finished
not yet availible)
• Improvement of PDF/VT (store MetaData about the individual information)

• store Output Intents not only for the complete document but also for pages,
• Specify whether Black Point Compensation(BPC) should be used or not
• ISO Standard will be PDF/X-6

New: set cut marks based on guidelines
You can set Cut Marks now based on guideslines that you set in register ->Proofcolor before:

New: "Cut and stack"
Motivation: Since PDF Toolbox 2019 you can placeholders for variable data on an imposed sheet.
With the new option "Cut and Stack" they form continuous pages after cutting and stacking.
This is shown in the preview already:

New: Mirroring of variable marks for text, barcode or images
Motivation: For label printing you sometimes print on transparent substrate. For this variable marks
can be mirrored now in the content menue (right mouse click):
As a result the dynamic mark is mirrored:

New: Support of various language character sets
Motivation: Wish was to create documents with variable placeholders in languages different from
english and german. The following character sets are supported independant from system locale.

Note: For each language one font is delivered. You can add other fonts by selecting a cer-
i tain character set and press "+".
Example: add other japanese fonts if character set "japanese" is selected:

New: Support of different writing direction
Motivation: Some languages that we can add now have different writing directions.
E.g. CJK fonts vertical or Hebrew or Arabic right to left writing. This can be set now:

Motivation: Enhancement of data format. Special data format was needed.

Now you can choose different placeholders for time or define it different to the default similar to the
data format from Prinect SignaStation:

New: iVDP Workflow: Browse corresponding machine files.
Motivation: Ease of use for Heidelberg Labelfire customers.

There are different abilities in marks replacement depending on machine and its version. To get this
information and a list of possible placeholders supported you can load a configuration file:

New: Use of guidelines set in Geometrie Control
Motivation: Cross correspondance with Geomtrie Control. Use a created guideline set of Geometry
Control when placing dynamic marks.

New: Trimbox is shown
Motivation: Since version 2020 the trimbox of a PDF is permanently shown:

New: Placeholders used on a page are listed
Motivation: Ease of use. You see all placed placeholders for barcodes or text in a list. You can select
a placeholder and it is marked on the page:
New: Correspondant record is shown when selecting the warning
Motivation: Ease of use. You get a summary of all replacements of the placeholder if you click to
"check" in the tab PDF/VT. In the list you can click to a warning now and the concerned record is
shown in the window for your direct control:

Versioning Assistant
Introduction: When preparing PDF files for versioning you must always respond the questions:
• Can the product be printed with a change of the black plate only?
For Versioning the PDF files can be delivered in either one file that need the be split or several already
splitted files into base and version. Depending on that you have to answer following questions before
going to production:
1. The base and the language versions are in separate files:
• Do the already separated files delivered by my customer fit onto the base?
• Is the version color set to overprint?
• Are there any other colors than version color in the language layer?
• Are there any knockout effects?
• Are the knockouts set on purpose but elements in the same color have to overprint?
• Are all elements in version color set to overprint?
• Are there knockout elements after the spot color of a text layers is mapped to process?
2. The base and the versions are in one composite file.

• What elements can be splitted into version layer?
3. All versions are in one file. (same as above)

With help of Versioning Assistant you can answer those questions.
You can split, compare files, remove unwanted knockouts or check Versioning prior to print. Mind
that it is depending on the files if they can be produced for versioning. For example there might be
images with different scaling in the versions and therefore it is not possible to create a language inde-
pendent base for all versions.
Besides the major change of integration of the Versioning Assistant into the Prinect Cockpit the Assis-
tant has a lot of changes concerning ease of use, improvements for finding and correcting problems
in delivered PDFs.

New: Simulation of mapping spot text black to black
Motivation: Ease of use and improvement of correction options.

One of the most frequent errors in delivered separated PDF is that the text layer contains image
frames with 0% spot black filling. When mapping this spot black to black you will get knockout
effects of the base as 0% black is overprinting objects from the base. This might result in missing
elements or a missing black separation depending what is covered.
Example for covering effects: 0% spot black covering black separation

a) in images -> black separation is missing after mapping:

b) 0% spot black covering text. -> Text is missing after mapping

This effect can be checked now in Versioning Assistant prior to production:

In the drop down menue of the layers choose Black (Version):
i Note: Multiselection is possible if you mark colors with "alt"-key. Make a right mouse click
and mark the target color Black (Version):

New: Preview of effects of used settings
Motivation: Ease of use. You see the effects of settings immediately on screen.
Until now you saw the result of a "remove invisible white" only after you pressed "cleanup".
Now the result is displayed on screen with a "apply settings" for a visual control.
Don´t forget to press "cleanup" to make the settings happen:

New: Warning if 0% Version Color
Motivation: Ease of use and improved error corrections

0% version color filling s might cause problems when mapped as explained.
In the Information window you get automatically a warning if frames with 0% spot color filling are
detected in either separated or combined PDF.

New: Highlight 0%
Motivation: Ease of use and improved error corrections.

As you recieved a hint in the information window for 0% version colors the new checkbox "Highlight
0%" visualizes these elements to help you finding these elements.

Note: Depending on the page color the marking color is sometimes hard to see. With a
i "Shift" + click to the red triangle you can change the display color:

New: Splitting of combined PDF into base and textlayer possible with transparencies
Motivation: Ease of use. Splitting PDF with transparencies is possible now.

All elements with transparency stay in baselayer.

New: Renaming of "remove white graphics" in "remove invisible white"
Motivation: Ease of use. The naming of this function caused uncertainity. Therefore it was renamed
in "remove invisible white" to make sure that only invisible content is deleted.
Note: What is "invisible white"?

Elements (text, grafic, smooth shades or images) in 0% color are invisible.
Mind that the Versioning Assistant can remove this elements but the user has to check if these
elements can be removed or not!
In which case "invisible white" is removed?
When enabled invisible white is removed if:
• it is a 0% spot black text or black element (graphic, smooth shade, image or bitmap)
• it is a spot black text element that is mapped to black
Invisible white is not removed if:
• it is already a black text (K of CMYK)
This is also implemented in Prinect 2019.10.

Remember if you get a warning for 0% Version color you need to check if you can remove it or not.

New: Improvement in "remove invisible white"
Motivation: Improved error corrections. This function used to remove invisible white in separated
PDF only. Now white grahics are removed in composite PDF as well.

New: Integration of Versioning Assistant into Cockpit
Motivation: Ease of use.The Versioning Assisant can be used interactively for checking files for
versioning, for helping you to find potential problem areas. It can as well be used as a decision help
for the right setting in Versioning Prepare.
Prerequisite: In Prinect Cockpit you must have at least:

• 2 versioned pagelists of same lengh and
• all page positions must have assigned pages.
Make a right mouse click to the pagelists and click "check Versioning":

What is possible:
• Direct take over of changes made in Versioning Assistant only possible for separated PDF so
far.
• In case of clean up separated files they are changed in ->pagefiles current.

When closing Acrobat you will get:

which is shown in the history of the Job:
• split. In case of splitting up composite PDF files they are NOT placed in pagefiles current but in
an extra folder. You have to grab the files from there.

Motivation: Ease of use in placing dynamic marks with help of guideline

Motivation: Since version 2020 the trimbox of the PDF is permanently show to ease the use.

New: Tagging of elements for security printing
Motivation: Labelfire or Primefire customers requested security label printing.

A security label is part of another image and after print invisible (optical image hiding).
Images that are used as security labels have a certain screening type that must not be changed and
it must not exceed a certain area coverage.
Example:
Image + Security Label: Printed on Labelfire/Primefire:

Security labels must stay unchanged concerning color management or raster.

In PDF Toolbox you can tag a page for this purpose with "security", "register" or deafult and for no
special treatment "none" either in Assemble Pages... :

The identifiers (names are based on machine conventions) have the following consequences:
•None: There is no separate treatment of the colors.
•Security: The colors remain unchanged and are specially rasterized.
•Register: Colors remain unchanged unless the permissible area coverage is exceeded.

With Coating Editor define a varnish and varnish the security label with a certain color that is recog-
nized by Label.- or Primefire:
Note: If you want to use this feature please get in contact with the Labelfire support team for more
information as only Labelfire and certain machine package software is supported so far.

New tool for creation of structured documents
Motivation: Wish for a tool that can assemble different PDF documents or pages out of different
documents.
Besides of assembling different PDFs in different chapters you can also insert empty pages at the end
of a chapter for notes or register for digital devices. You are able to invers order or rotate pages.
