Assignment Questions:

1. As Martha McCaskey, what is your plan of action for finishing

the silicon 6 project? Please map out your detailed plan of
action (2.5)

Ans: Martha McCaskey must take up the silicon 6 project.

The three courses of action she can take are:
1. Exit: She could leave the organization but by doing so she would have
to leave her
dream company for which she has worked so hard to get and she would
have got the
promotion if she managed to complete the project successfully.
2. Raising Voice: She may choose to report this issue of unethical
practices that are
being done in the organization but this might result in the following
a. Lack of responsibility: In the future, her boss Mr. Malone would
think that
she is not capable of running difficult projects and would lose her
promotion
b. She will lose the trust of her boss Mr Malone.
c. The project will be given to the old guards, they will use any
means necessary
to get the job done
3. loyalty: This course of action states that she should take this project as
the following
points will support this course of action:
a. Mr Devon is free to give the information about the organization as
he has
worked with the same organization 12 years ago and he is not
legally bound to
not share the information and he has worked with another
organization under
the same situation.
b. She will gain the trust of her bosses.
c. She will earn respect in her organization.

2. What is troubling Martha ? Was this situation avoidable ? (2.5)

Ans: McCaskey was aware about the unethical practices that were carried
out in her
company, during the course of her work. Even though she was aware of it
she was never concerned about raising these issues. But, when she was
asked to get the insider information, she felt like being part of these
unethical practices. This was the situation that troubled Martha McCaskey.

Her way of assessment of the situation was not correct. She should not let
her rationale get
influenced by her moral ethics, even though there is a high possibility of
that happening.
Martha McCaskey’s assessment can be supported by the following points:
Martha had to take into consideration the six pillars of character
(Trustworthiness, Fairness,
Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Citizenship)
 If she delegates the work to Kauffman she will lose the trust of her
employer. The
respect for her among the employers decrease.
 If she continues with the silicon 6 project she will be considered as
the employee with responsibility
 By continuing with the project, she can prove the commitment
towards the job and
will maintain her citizenship in the workplace

This way, I feel a better decision can be made

2. What happened to the Westons? What actions and beliefs

facilitated their behavior?(2)

Ans: In this case both Chris and Alison were successful, well-educated and
ambitioned
couple ended up serving 20 and 18 months in prison for mailing fraud.
in 2002 Chris was recruited for the most senior position. One of the
biggest responsibilities for Chris in the organization was to fill the huge
number of opening. The organization was free market organization the
most important thing was to get the job done by any means.
Chris saw an opportunity to help his wife and get something of his started-
up. His wife
started a staffing business for which he can give some immediate work.
But slowly they
started to billing for the services that they had not provided. Six months
after leaving the organization a law suit was filed in the federal court for
the same.

Action and beliefs facilitated their behaviour:

Two main reason for the action of Weston's are
1. Chris wanted his wife to work, as owing to the huge promotion that
Chris got, Alison had
to leave her old job and had nothing to do, so Chris wanted to help by
giving her some
staffing job.
2. The behaviour or the working ethics of the organization was only
focussed on the
bottom line that work needed to be done by any means and there was no
direct chain of
command to whom Chris had to answer about his every action.

4. Using the “Moral Disengagement Warning Signs” from the
article, please identify specific examples of moral disengagement
from Weston (A) Case. (For example, moral justification,
Euphemistic Labeling, etc.) (3)

Ans:
Here are the Moral Disengagement strategies that Mr. and Mrs. Weston
used for the case:
1. Advantageous comparison
2. Diffusion of responsibility
Advantageous comparison: Chris Weston was comparing himself to the
management that he was working with. Due to the fact that the company
culture was unethical, he ended up doing the same actions as his
colleagues. He began to think that he was not doing the worst unlike the
owner, executive, and directors of the company. He treated his actions
inside and outside of the company seem acceptable and there were no
flaws. The wife, Allison, was not aware of what is exactly going on with her
husband's company, however, she agreed to partner with his husband to
complete the launching of their company.
Displacement of responsibility:
Diffusion of responsibility: Chris began starting to create unethical action
based on what he sees at his work. He asked his wife to create a business
to help him with his current job which he did not inform the executive and
directors about this plan. He launched the side company using the maiden
name of his wife. Since he is a part of a company that ethical action is not
taking seriously, he began to do things in unethical ways, as long as he
gets the job done. On top of that, the wife also did not question her
husband's action and decided to help his husband to start the business
without asking all the information she needed to know or had a private
meeting with the owner and/or CEO of Chris’s company.
