7. What is/was the purpose/objective of the address?

The speech was made to congratulate Rizal’s peers, Juan Luna and Felix Hidalgo for the
achievements they’ve got from their paintings.
Part Two: Composition of the Address
8. What is the theme of the address?

For me, the theme of ‘The Brindis” was that it portrayed the very least scene of dark reality of this
country which involved the war between man and his fellow men. However, it was stressed on the
speech that the main reason of this speech was to commemorate the achievement done by Juan Luna
and Felix Hidalgo. The theme was “vague” but visible and unmasked.

9. What is the tone (friendly, stern, combative, conciliatory, hopeful, fearful, etc.) of the address?
The tone of the speech was a little bit combative, yet the message was stern and just, with a bit of
hope and victory.

10. What mood (optimism, pessimism, safety, danger, immediacy, etc.) does the address create?
The speech had the mood set to pessimism as it tackled the doctrine that there was a
force that overbalanced happiness in life.

11. What rationale (emotional, logical, ethical, etc.) is the address presented from?
The speech was emotional in any perspective.

12. How well are claims and contentions put forth in the address supported?

14. Were you positively or negatively moved by the speech? Why? 15. What thoughts or emotions were
stirred in you by the address?
It was an emotional speech, making me positively moved into doing something that Rizal wanted
his fellow men to do at that time.

16. How well do you think the intended audience received the address?
I was kind of unsure if the intended audience had received what Rizal was trying to reach out using
that speech. The message and the intention were a bit vague, vague for the reason that there were
different objectives and goals made by the speaker.

17. What did you find most/least appealing about the address?
Most Appealing Reasons
1. 1.
2. 2.
Least Appealing Reasons
3. 3.
4. 4.

18. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being not impressed and 10 being totally impressed) how impressed were you
with this address? Explain.

I would rate the speech from 1 to 10 as 9. The speech was good, the script was good also.
The objectives were clearly pointed out, although it didn’t focus on only one goal which
made the intended audience a little bit confused.
